    3. Betsy McKay Wylie married John Budge in April 1885 in South Ronaldshay. They had 14 children (I have all their names) some of which moved to New Zealand & Australia. 2 daughters came to Canada after they had married 2 Kirkness brothers. Unable to find any info on Betsy. Her daughter's birth certificate reads for the parents: Betsy McKay Budge and underneath that is M.S. Wylie which I take to be her maiden name. Any idea what her real name could be? Thanks Heather Manitoba, Canada

    3. I am looking for any record of a family of tinkers, name of father Duncan MCPHEE, Mother Elizabeth(Cameron) MCPHEE..children John, James, Elizabeth, Susan...all of the children were brought up in orphanages in Greenock from the late 1920's to 1930's..they were given their parents names, told they were tinkers but no other information was given...they were later told that they had died..this may not have been true at that time...John later emigrated to Chicago, himself and Elizabeth my mother-in-law were re-united as adults after she advertised in a Sunday Newspaper, his landlady recognised the name and contacted Elizabeth to tell her John had joined the RAF and had lodged at her house before emigrating to America...James was found but the reunion was not a success, Susan has never been found, she was last seen in Greenock in 1939..the Scotland GRO searched through all of their records when Elizabeth applied for a Birth Certificate to obtain a passport for a visit to John in the US, they found nothing, no record of births for any of the children..we searched the St Cath's indexes for England and Wales, found nothing also..they may have been born in Ireland or Births may not have been registered as seemed to be commonplace among Travelling families..I have heard that MCPHEE was a very common name among Highland tinkers.....Elizabeth was contacted some time ago by a BBC Researcher who was interested in making a documentary about Elizabeth's search for her roots and sister, she has also been interviewed on BBC Radio Merseyside, in the North Wales Weekly news and a reporter in Greenock contacted us about the story....if anyone has any record of this family or comes across any Memorial Inscription for Duncan and/or Elizabeth, marriage record or anyone who may know or have known Susan, Please contact me at cpwill@globalnet.co.uk..thanks, sorry for this long mail..by the way, have added a page for Old Kilsyth Churchyard Stirlingshire Memorial Inscriptions to the Genealogy Scotland site below..transcribed by Bob Coomber, who first sent them to the Stirlingshire Mailing list..and kindly gave his permission for me to put them on a page, many many, names a wonderful resource, Caryl Williams http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/index.html Ancestor Quest UK and Ireland Genealogy http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/names-7.html A-Z of Family Surnames From England http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/index-2.html Genealogy Wales, Wales/Cymru, the culture, language and history of Wales. http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/scot.html Genealogy Scotland~Clans~History http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/Eire-7.html Genealogy~History~Ireland http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/Eirenames-7.html A-Z of Ireland Family Surnames Pages http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/veterans.html British WW2 Reunion Page and tracing your Military Ancestors http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/missing-7.html The Missing

    3. Hi Susan, Yes, I do have that letter. (it's in this disaster area somewhere) I was reading it again yesterday. I sent a copy to Margaret Zahalka, who would be William Pottinger's grand-daughter. She is part of the Pottingers that went to Racine, WI She said there was a blacksmith living in Racine by the name of Robert Pottinger. She is unsure of Robert's father's name. She gave me the address of Robert's granddaughter, but she didn't think we were related to Robert. Thomas and Jane had to have come to the US before July 4, 1874 (their oldest daughter Isabelle was born in Lycippus, Pa) My family is connected to Racine, WI through Jane's younger sister Georgina Miller Her husband John Allen came from Westray to Racine. She married him there and they ran a boarding house for young men who came over from the islands. When William and Jane died Georgina took in their two youngest daughters who were abandoned by the older sister. That's how part of the Pottingers got to Racine. I was also able to get a hold of some census records for 1851 in Westray and I think they may be my Pottingers. Here they are. Let me know if you thein they might be connect to yours too. Trilot (name of the farm) William Pottenger 38 Margaret Pottenger 36 Mary 12 George 10 Jean 8 William 2 I also tried to get William's death certificate, but have come up empty on two places where he may have been at the time of his death. I'm begining to think I have the wrong dates. Some of the other information I got from the family Bible was unreliable too. I am curious-do you have any idea when William Pottinger and his brother Thomas came over to the States from the Orkneys? I think I sent you a portion of a letter written in 1909 by a James Pottinger of Westray indicating one son James had gone to Racine and one of his other sons William was still in the Orkneys at the time, living on Sanday.

    3. Four decades ago, plans for constructing Tuttle Creek dam at Manhattan, KS, USA, also called for the obliteration of a small town to the north which otherwise would be submerged in the reservoir's backwaters. The little Kansas town named in 1860 for a favorite American writer, Washington Irving (who wrote _Rip Van Winkle_ and _Legend of Sleepy Hollow_ amongst other popular works), was disassembled after exactly once century and now no longer exists. Please see: <http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/graphics/famed/irving.htm> <http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/books/cutler/marshall/marshall-co-p9.html#IRVING.> <http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/graphics/maps/bigblue.htm> I once read that Washington Irving's father was born on Shapinsay. Does anyone know of Washington Irving's ancestry in Orkney? Could the original family name have been Irvine? Dick Taylor

    3. To Anne and all list members: I have to unsub from the list until the 2nd week in January. Family history research is having to take a back seat to current Family Obligations...you know, little things such as shopping, baking, Christmas, New Years, visiting, visitors, etc.. Will keep my fingers crossed that while I'm offline, no one comes onboard who is searching for Laings or Measons (Laing-Measons), Wemyss or Whitelaws. If any do, perhaps one of you will grab them and hold them for me! In the meantime, here's wishing you all, a truly beautiful Christmas and a New Year filled with wonderful surprises, good health, and of course, many successes in locating those elusive ancestors on your own family trees. See you...via email anyhow....in 1999. Kate Keene Ottawa, Ont. Canada

    3. Hi everybody! My name's Tom Orkney. I believe one of my ancestors was named after the Orkneys. I was hoping maybe their were some Orkney's that maybe either lived on or visited the Islands. It's always been my dream to visit the Orkney Islands but alas it will have to wait a few more years - at least. Well if anyone knows of any Orkneys please let me know.

    3. Dear Laurie, The Sanday parish registers are in the Scottish Record Office, Edinburgh. They are available on microfilm at an LDS Family History Center as Sanday OPR, 1735-1854 film number 0990509. They are in fairly good shape and the handwriting is generally quite legible. Good luck with your research. 3. Hello Anne, I've been away a month and just catching up on all the messages. You asked if anyone has anything to add regarding research. In response to the queries about the name Traill, those who have ready access to the archives in Kirkwall should take a look at the inventory of the Traill-Dennison papers. These are extensive estate papers regarding various properties owned by branches of the Traill families in a number of the islands. Among these are leases, daybooks, accounts and other miscellaneous documents. They have been utilized well by R.P. Fereday in his two books, Orkney Feuds and the '45 (Kirkwall: Kirkwall Grammar School, 1980) and The Orkney Balfours 1747-99 - Trenaby and Elwick (Oxford: Tempvs Reparatvm, 1990). However, a lot of work can still be done in these treasures. I would love to do so myself, but live in California and may not get to Kirkwall for another year or two. Thank you so much for this information, and thanks also to Ron of this list, who was able to shed light on the Strenzie problem. Of course, now that I've got more information, I'm very anxious to see where it leads. (Read this as more postings coming up!!) <g> Seriously though, I want you and everyone else on this list to know that I appreciate being a member of it, and thank each of you, for your generosity and willingness to help. I hope, at some point, to be able to do as you, assist others in their research. Sincerely, Kate Keene Ottawa, Ont.
