I am reading old documents and histories and come across words I don't understand. I'm hoping someone from Orkney can (please) help me out! 1)What is an odal property? 2)Are odallers the same as farmers? 3)In legal documents of the 1600's, what does "is on an Assize" mean? 4) in a document from 1669 "John and his wife, give state, saving liferent of his mother to Thomas....." (Maybe "life rent" is two words....??) 5) What exactly was the Uthell Book? I have 3 pages copied from the book, and it appears to be lists of current landholders....but what does "land Uthell" mean exactly after every entry? For example "two penney land Uthell" Thanks for your help....Jane in New Hampshire, USA

Hi Folks, I wanted to let everyone know, especially those with a genealogy web site, that Rootsweb is now offering surname query boards for sponsors and donors. Sponsorship begins at $24.00 a year and entitles you to two surname query boards. To become a sponsor visit http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html I have revised the forum at my website even though my query board was similar to the one offered by Rootsweb because now with a Rootsweb query board when a message is posted it is contributed to the vast genealogy archive that is being gathered by the Rootsweb volunteer cooperative. I have enclosed the query board within a frame. You can see it at http://rendall.net/discuss/ In order to encourage people to become sponsors, I will send a set of my html frame templates to anyone who requests it when they become sponsors and sign up for a query board with Rootsweb. If you are already a sponsor, I will gladly forward the templates to you as well, contact me directly at anne@rendall.net Regards, Anne Rendall Rendall dot Net http://rendall.net Volunteer Listowner Orkney-L Volunteer host OrkneyGen Web -> http://rendall.net/orkney

Is there a place called ARIE or AVIE in Orkney, or should it be EVIE? My ancestor Jane MILLAR/MILLER came to Australia in 1855 and the shipping record states she is from Arie, Orkney. She was born about 1829, her parents being John & Rebecca MILLAR/MILLER. Would anyone have access to the 1841 &/or 1851 census for the above area & be able to do a search on them for me. Any help is appreciated. Karen Sullivan Sydney Australia kassul@bigpond.com

Found your message fascinating reading - know what you mean about the save button! My particular interest is in the Groat surname, of which I see one or two in your list. These seem to ring bells with me (or perhaps it is the thought of Hogmanay!). Will try and have a look through soon and let you know. Just out of curiosity you know! I am researching Sclaters/Slaters of Firth Parish, Mainland, and have discovered that a child b circa 1814 was named Simon Thomson Slater, but have not yet found a marriage between a Sclater/Slater and a Thomson. I am interested in sharing information with anyone researching Sclaters/Slaters. Jane Stephenson
After about 30 minutes of typing, my connection to Netscape dropped and lost my previous attempt to get this information out to you. Hit the SAVE button - I know, I know! BTW, does anyone know why my two families, the WALLS/WALLACE and THOMSON families rarely married each other? Was there some kind of feud between them? I've been compiling a list of Thomsons with a connection to South Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands. After 30 years of teaching, I thought I'd seen all the possible variations of the name - my personal favourite is Thomspon- but those creative spellers in the previous centuries have the modern ones beat! The ones I've found are Tamson, Tameson, Tamison, Thomson, Thomison, Thomesone, Thomsone, Thompson, Tomison, Tompson. I know that many of these families have retained the variant spelling but I discovered that one family may have several different spellings, depending on who recorded the event. I also know that first names were similarly treated - today's favourite is Pnellypay!- as well as other last names like Tait/Teat and Norquay/Norqwoy. I have tried to take the information available on Walt Custer's wonderful website at > http://www.cursiter.com/ > and arrange the people into families of Thomson children. I have a list of over 100 families (and I'd typed in about 37 when I lost my last effort!) and if they fit with someone you're researching, please contact me and I'll send you the children's names and birthdates so you can compare them to what you have. The first 19 are children whose parents are both Thomsons or where there is only one parent listed. After that, I list them alphabetically by the mother's last name. The format is this: Mother's full name, Father's given name(s), date of marriage or birth of first child if marriage not known. 1. No Mother Listed (but may be Jean BERSTOUN for abt 1749), Alexander, 1751-59 and also 1851 2. Ann TOMISON, No Father Listed, 1858 3. Betsy THOMSON, NFL (poss. COOLE). 1870 4. NML, David, 1657 5. Elizabeth WOOLDRAGE, William, 1816 Hoo boy, have I ever hit the Save button a lot of times as I did this! I'm researching the family of Malcolm WALLS who married 1. Christian BRUCE and 2. Elizabeth THOMSON and had 3 children with each. He changed his name to Malcom WALLACE part way through the second family! I found something interesting the other day by looking at the census on Walt's site. Malcolm's son, John Thomson WALLACE, and his wife Helen SPENCE had 4 children listed in the WALLACE births text. On the census, it became apparent that this couple had been in Canada, had at least two children and then RETURNED to South Ronaldsay, something I had never thought of. My Christmas present this year was to find a new relative in Wales. Our connection had reversed his second name and family name when he moved to Canada, likely because he had been born illegitimate in England. Made him harder for both of us to find the connection but we did it! I hope you can find some names of interest in here. Let me know if you do. Does one say Happy Hogmanay? Merry Christmas from a Shearer who gets to come to Orkney in March. We are so excited. The Shearers of Holm Parish, Wilderness Farm. All the boys emigrated to USA and to Shetland in the 1880s. In the family is the story that we were a part of the Gordon clan in Scotland at one time. I would like to take the line back further but have not actually begun. My first job is to ask my 91 yoer old father about his Orkney grandparents. HAVE A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS AND A PEACEFUL 1999. I have listed 10 generations from my 4-x-greatgrandparents John WILLIAMSON born abt 1751 in Shirva, Shetland and Isabella IRVINE born abt 1750 in Fair Isle, Shetland to their granddaughter Margaret WILLIAMSON (my great- grandmother) born 1840 in Whitehall, Stronsay to many of their descendants born in the Orkneys to those born in Canada and the US. A few of the names that may be of interest are WILLIAMSON, IRVINE, LESLIE, FIDDLER, STOUT, EUNSON, HARCUS, MACKENZIE, RENDALL, etc. I also can do lookups for the Whitehall, Stronsay Census of 1841, 1851 and 1861. Anne, Thank you for doing this. It is much appreciated. Phil Pursley

I would like to thank everyone who replied to me re my request for help finding information about the McPHEE travelling families. I will reply to each individually as and when I can. I'm just overwhelmed with gratitude and we know so much more now than we did before about 'The Summer Walkers' and their way of life. It is with great regret that I will have to unsubscribe from the lists now because of the volume of mail but many of the other mails regarding other subjects have been very interesting and I may resubscribe again to a couple after the holidays. Thanks again to all, have a Merry Christmas and most of all a very Happy Hogmanay. Caryl Williams http://members.tripod.com/~Caryl_Williams/index.html Ancestor Quest UK and Ireland Genealogy
Hi Folks, As the volunteer host for the Orkney Gen Web project I'm writing to ask your assistance. I would like to do two things: 1) Gather a list of all Orkney surname sites (such as my Rendall.net) and all personal homepages that have online family trees that include Orcadian ancestors. If you have such a site, or know of one, I would appreciate it if you would send me: a) the URL b) the title of the site c) a brief description of the site that I may include at the Orkney Gen Web page. You may email me at anne@rendall.net 2) I have long thought that it would be to everyone's advantage if it we could collect Orcadian GEDCOM files in a central place on line. (GEDCOM is a standard format that most, if not all, family tree software programs can export to - this facilitates file sharing). At my website I have installed a perl program that resides on the UNIX server that hosts my site that takes a GEDCOM file and creates a family tree. It can remove information for living people from the tree, it creates a searchable database, decendency and pedigree charts, and allows all or part of the file to be extracted for download. You can see it at http://rendall.net/trees/ I would be happy offer my site as a repository for Orcadian GEDCOM files, or to form with others an ad hoc online Orkney Family History organization and rent web space else where. Rootsweb would be an alternative if they offer private cgi-bins, or GEDCOM hosting but I don't believe they do at the present time. I appreciate your assistance and feedback. and. . . HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Regards, Anne Rendall Rendall dot Net http://rendall.net Volunteer Listowner Orkney-L Volunteer host OrkneyGen Web -> http://rendall.net/orkney
Dear Heather, I saw your query this morning and thought I ought to answer since there seems to be little traffic so close to the holidays. The M.S. before Wylie in the document just means "Maiden Surname," so her full name is Betsy McKay Wylie. When looking for her birth in the indexes, whether the printed (film or fiche) ones or the on-line SRO listings, try other forms of Betsy: Betty, Elisabeth, Beth, Betts, etc. If her birth was registered, you should be able to find it. Good luck and best wishes for the holiday season.
