    3. Hi Pam Thanks for the info. I have researched Walt's site and did also have that bit of info. But now to find out if he's my Gilbert. I have matched up with my Isabella's great grandson and we are now trying to put our info together on this family. I figured that with Gilbert and Oman being such unusual names it was a good place to start. Again thank you. 3. I am searching for information on or about Oman THOMSON who was christened on 22 July 1846 in South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands. Oman was the son of John THOMSON and Margaret ANNAL. Oman was one of 8 children. His siblings were Robert, Isabella, James, Gilbert, Margaret, John and William who was my great grandfather. Margaret Annal Thomson died in 1850 at the age of 50, John Thomson died in 1861 around the age of 61. The family is listed on the 1851 Census for South Ronaldsay and Burray. At the time Oman was 4 years old. Any assistance in finding information on Oman or his family line would be greatly appreciated. I have information to share as well. Thank you. 3. Maybe we should just rename this the McKay list! Thanks Stephen, now we know that several McKays from Farr moved to South Ronaldsay/Burray. We have Donald, b. abt1806, Hugh b. abt 1809, John b. abt 1811, Euphemia, b. abt 1814, Ann, b. abt 1812 and Margaret b. abt 1807. The chances of them being brothers and sisters are very good so next we need to see if one set of parents in Farr had children with those names. First one to find out should let us all know! I also wanted to direct people to a very good site from Nova Scotia which is about clans, septs and tartans and is very informative. It also has links to Electric Scotland which hosts chat sessions for different names. I highly recommend this site - sponsored by Clan MacKay! > http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Heritage/FSCNS/Scots_NS/About_Clans/Scot_Clan.html > -- Pam Thomson http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/ Town Square Network

A check of the 1851 census for Hugh McKays found one age 42, fisherman, unmarried, born Farr, Sut., a boarder with John and Betsy McKay and family. (John age 40, born Farr) [nearby was a Euphemia McKay, lodger, unmarried, age 37, born Farr; Ann, wife of Thomas Anderson, age 39, born Farr; Margaret, wife of John Guthrie, age 44, born Farr......] A James Taylor, age 57, was born in South Ronaldsay; An Ann Johnston, age 58, unmarried was born in Burray. (Of course, I have no way of knowing if any of these are the correct people or not.) So there exists the possibility that Hugh and Donald were related, and perhaps John too. Happy Hunting! Stephen

    3. To continue the McKay/Mackay discussion. I have an ancestor, Donald McKAY b. 1806 who is listed on the 1851 census as being from Farr, Sutherland too. He married Elizabeth WOOLRIDGE (WOLDRAGE) of South Ronaldsay. They had two daughters, Betsy, b. 1832 in Burray (usually included with S. Ronaldsay in listings) who was a schoolmistress in 1851 and Barbara b. 1829 in Burray who was my 2G grandmother and married Robert Thomson WALLACE, son of Malcolm WALLS. Donald McKAY must have come from Farr between 1821 and 1828. I was given some interesting information from fellow lister Stephen Wood. In 1821, Eliza WOOLRIDGE was 12 years old and she and 3 other young people were living with an older couple, John and Eliza DUNCAN, both 62. One of the others was Hugh MCKAY, 13. The other two were Jas. TAYLOR, 26 and Ann JOHNSTONE, 25. I'm curious to know why they would have all lived with the Duncans and if Hugh McKay and Donald McKay are connected. The 1851 census has more helpful information so we know that the McKays had two farm labourers, Barbara PETRIE, and John WOOLRAGE, living with them and that Donald was a "farmer of 26 acres". I believe I read that the area around Farr in Sutherland is the seat of the McKay clan. In some notes my aunt has, there is also mention of an Alexander McKay and Betsy CAMPBELL but I haven't figured out how that fits in or why so many McKays moved to the Orkneys from the mainland. After a few months of research, I've discovered that most people stayed put in those days, usually marrying and dying on the island where they were born. 3. Hi Lou. This may or may not be related to the Sinclair line you mentioned, although I have a Hannah SINCLAIR (my 5xgreat grandmother)who married William BALFOUR in the 1760's, however I have the MACKAY name in my tree as well. I have been having difficulties with that side of the family. My 4xGgrandfather Angus MACKAY married Euphan BALFOUR(b1770), who had child Elizabeth MACKAY c1806. As this would put her around the same age as your William, I was wondering if you know anything of his siblings / other family? I only know of Elizabeth at this stage. How have you traced the MacKay section of the tree? As these families seem to be very interlinked, there may well be a link that turns up. If this is not immediately apparent, please keep it in mind in future. Elizabeth MACKAY married James WORK in 1828 in Kirkwall. Which larger Island is Orphir near?
