    3. Shyama Just some oddments which don't alas answer your questions about OMAN to EUMAN changes or their documented migrations to Midlothian and the Borders. Here's an Oman in Edinburgh, Midlothian in 1825 from Scottish Sasines (property) Records +++++++++ Charles OMAN, Hotel keeper, seised May 27 1825 in centre house on north side of Charlotte Square on disp. by Henry RITCHIE of Busbie May 18 1825 Hugh MACPHERSON, Tacksman of Drummuie, Sutherland, seised May 27 1825 in above on security of £1,000 on bond by OMAN. Isabella CATHCART resident in Princes Street seised May 27 1825 in centre house as above in security of £2,000 on bond by OMAN. +++++++ Quite a few families must have come from Orkney to Midlothian in the last century. Certainly my own CUSITER family did, and ISBISTERs also appear in 19th certury Edinburgh directories. I also find OMAN(D) mothers in some of my own Orkney family names: eg OMAN & CURSATER (St Andrews,1700s), OMAND & FIRTH (Stromness, 1830s), OMAND & FIRTH (Deerness, 1840s), OMAND & ISBESTER (Firth 1770s), OMAND & ISBISTER (Firth 1750s) YEOMAN & ISBESTER (1820s), OMAND & SPENCE (Stromness) Coming closer to today, a 1961 Edinburgh directory has 2 OMAN, 1 OMAND and 2 OMOND in the city, no EUMAN though plenty of YEAMAN and YEOMAN. Are HUMAN and HOMAN not also variants of this name? Sorry not to have come across anything more solid. Best Wishes Roger Kelly -----Original Message----- From: Shyama Peebles <shyama@gold.net.au> To: ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com <ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: 02 February 1999 12:04 Subject: [ORKNEY-L] EUMAN OR OMAN >...EUMAN is a variant of OMAN and >originated in the Orkneys. >Does anyone know of OMAN's who turned >into EUMAN's ? and does anyone have any >OMAN/EUMAN family lines that migrated >south to Midlothian & the Borders >Best Wishes>Shyama Peebles, Coolgardie, Western Australia >

    3. Hello Shyama, I'm afraid that I can't help you much about the origin of the name but as a youngster in the 30's/40's I lived in Innerleithen in Peebles-shire. As you say EUMAN was quite a common name in the Borders. My parents were friendly with a Mrs EUMAN who had a shop in Innerleithen High Street at that time but I can't remember what she sold. I think that there were two or three other local families of that name but not sure if they were related. All lost in the mists of time!! My maternal g. grandfather., Alexander AULD, a 'Coachman, Domestic', with his wife and family were on the island of Rousay in the Orkneys from about 1875 to 1883. Sorry I can't be of more help Best wishes. 1. [ORKNEY-L] HEDDLE family, OKI, SCT >S AUST 1851 on the "Marion" - + WORK, HEPBURN? & HUTCHISON?
    2. Charndra Josling
    3. Good eve, listers. I have just discovered a link to this family in my line and am attempting to tie it in. Would anyone happen to be descended from the HEDDLE family that came to SA in 1851 on the "Marion"? ( James and John HEDDLE) Or have this family in their tree? My Margaret HEDDLE [possibly the daughter of Robert HEDDLE and Marrion HEPBURN?], married William WORK [possibly the child of William WORK and Marrion Hutchison]and had a child named Margaret WORK C: 25 Nov 1832, among others[Mary(1815), William Balfour Work(1819), James Work(1822), Alexander Russell Work(1824)]. She (Margaret Work)came to Aust in 1851 on the "Marion" with some HEDDLEs, IRVINEs and others. Margaret WORK married James LOWE. I am hoping to confirm her background. 1. [ORKNEY-L] Trumland, Rousay
    2. STUART J SAUNDERS
    3. Hello. I am a newcomer to your list. In the 1881 Census my g.grandfather, ALEXANDER AULD, together with his wife CATHERINE(Nee WARES) and eight children were shown as living in Trumland (No.4), Rousay. My g.grandfather was shown as a 42 year old "Coachman, Domestic" I am very interested to know if Trumland was a large house and who the owner might have been at that time. I presume that my g.grandfather must have been employed by the owner or possibly there might have been another large house in the vicinity who required his services. By the time of the 1891 Census the AULD family were in the lodge at Blackhall Castle in Banchory on Deeside where my g.grandfather was still a "Coachman, Domestic" I should be delighted to hear from anyone who could help me. 1. [ORKNEY-L] SMITH/WAUGH
    2. Joanna Waugh
    3. Hi Group I am making this query in hopes of the remote possibility that someone from New Zealand may recognize this connection. I am looking for the family of Thomas SMITH b. Jan 16, 1851 in Lady Parish, Sanday,Orkney. His parents were Thomas Smith of Elsness district, Sanday, Orkney and Mary Morin WAUGH b.Jan 30,1823 possibly Kirkmahoe DFS and d.Feb 8,1856 in Elsness. She was buried in the Lady Parish church yard. The parents were married in March 13, 1847 by The RevJohn Anderson who was the minister of Lady Parish and who was also Mary's uncle. She had been either visiting or living with her uncle. His siblings were Catherine b.1848, John b.1849, William b. 1855 and two other sisters all born on Sanday. After Mary Waugh's death and sometime before 1873, it appears the Smith family moved to Londonderry. I have letters from Catherine in 1905 saying that all her siblings were dead except Thomas who had gone to New Zealand around 1887/88 with his oldest daughter after his wife had died.He left his two youngest children,a boy John b.abt 1887 and a girl Bessie b. abt 1885, to be raised by Catherine and her husband, Mr. STEVENSON. The Stevenson family lived on a farm at "Bohillionburt" near Londonderry. Is anyone researching this Smith/Waugh connection? Joanna Waugh Hamilton, Ont.,Canada

He married Susannah Lytle and they travelled to the USA, where they changed their last name to Wishard. The Wishart name is spread throughout Scotland. I just wanted to invite you to visit my website. Be sure to sign the guestbook to receive my monthly newsletter. Paul Wishard email: wishardp@jps.net
