    1. [ORKNEY-L] LOGIES in Orkney
    2. Laurie Black
    3. Hello All, My GGGgrandmother was Janet LOGIE, born 6 Mar 1773 at Westray and Papa Westray, Orkney to David and Ann LOGIE. Recently I succeeded in downloading a list of LOGIES from the International Genealogical Index. All of the documentation I have seen on David and Ann lists Ann's surname as LOGIE and I'm not certain if they put her married name by default or if her maiden name actually was LOGIE. The index lists a David and an Ann LOGIE that fit into the right date range, but they are brother and sister, born in Orkney of David LOGIE and Janet BIGLUND. Is there someone out their who is researching LOGIES and might help me unravel my line? Alas I am researching strictly online from Idaho, USA. Thank you! Laurie Black Glenns Ferry, Idaho USA magpie@micron.net Any aid would be greatly appreciated! Janet LOGIE (F)....................... So far my mother has been unable to locate a bookseller who even has a computer listing for the books. 3. Hello Stu et al, We do seem to have quite a few people interested in the Garrioch surname. You are quite right, the parish of Holm & Paplay is right next to Kirkwall. Kirkwall is where my name Kelday is from, from my grandfather Jonathan Garrioch Kelday, way back to 1600 (ish). Like many Orcadians and other Scots, my grandfather and his brother left for Canada, and I have relatives on Vancouver Island. However I live in the UK in North Yorkshire, so Edinburgh and the records office is only a 3 hour drive from here. If you, Karen, and Robert agree we could carry on the correspondence via our e-mail addresses, if that is what is normally done, as I am planning a visit to Edinburgh in the spring and if I have names and dates then maybe we can kill at least 4 birds with one stone as it were. 3. Hello John, My Garriochs originated in Canada with the arrival of William b. Aug 15, 1786 @ St. Ola, near Kirkwall. He was the son of Magnus Garrioch & Margaret Millar b. 1746 & 1759 respectively. William came to Canada with the Hudsons Bay Company and as far as I can tell, most of the Garriochs in this country who trace themselves back to Manitoba, are his descendants. I have browsed the Cursiter site but unfortunately I can't find any siblings who may have remained on the Islands nor can I find a line back from either of his parents. It is impossible for me to say whether there is a connection or not but I would welcome any advice you might have to offer about researching further on the Orkneys. Thanks for getting in touch, Karen -----Original Message----- From: JOHN KELDAY <JKELDAY@compuserve.com> To: ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com <ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, February 14, 1999 3:14 PM Subject: [ORKNEY-L] Surname Lookup >Message text written by INTERNET:ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com >>Have been lurking for some time now but have not seen any information >regarding the surname GARRIOCH. My great great grandmother was Margaret Garrioch born 1831. She was the daughter of Archibald Garrioch and Janet Garrioch, and they originated in Holm and Paplay. I know quite a lot about Margaret now, so if your line of enquiry follows mine I would be happy to share information. My ancestors came from Orkney to Canada in 1842 and I have masses of data but not too much which is earlier than that. However, I have Garrioch cousins now in Scotland and can give you that data. Where are you, and what is your own surname? Blake Allan, Victoria
