    3. Thanks to Janine on the help with the Petries of Burray. I have already researched(though still adding !) my own families here in Perthshire and my husband's Gunn family of Watten the traditional way, using Libraries, SRO etc etc. Now my daughter-in-law whose family came from Orkney and Shetland would like to find out more about her roots and I feel I am "cheating" using the net! We have names, but not dates. Christina Ross Guthrie, born at HeatherHall, Burray m James John Anderson in Kirkwall on the 28th May 1912 Christina was the dtr of Thomas Guthrie b Swannes Burray and Ann Thomson Petrie. Ann Thomson Petrie was b Cellardyke Burray dtr of Christina Bruce and James Bruce, Burray We have visited Orkney and had a most enjoyable holiday at Dounby Kay -

    3. Kay Christina Ross Guthrie Sept. 18, Ann's name was Rossanna Petrie and they were married on Nov. 21. I found this on the LDS site. I am tracing the Petrie's from Burray and am trying to get a site going for South Ronaldsay. I have not come across this couple and I would appreciate any info that you have on this family that you are willing to exchange. I will keep your email on file and if I find out anything more on Rossanna and Thomas I will let you know. I am searching Betsy Sutherland and James Petrie from Burray early 1800's. You may also want to contact Norma.Thain@virgin.net. She has over 13000 Petrie's in her data base and may be able to help, she has been a super help to me. Would love to hear more of your family. 1. [ORKNEY-L] Duncan in South Ronaldsay
    2. Pam Thomson
    3. Hi all, My recent receipt of a great-uncle's research shows that my 3G grandmother, Elizabeth WOOLRIDGEwas the daughter of John Woolridge and Barbara DUNCAN. Elizabeth was born in about 1809 and, at 12 years old, was shown in the 1821 census as living with John and Eliza Duncan in South Ronaldsay- John and Eliza were both 62 so I imagine they were her grandparents. The Hugh McKay shown living there is likely the brother of Elizabeth's future husband Donald, one of the many McKays who came to South Ronaldsay from Farr, Sutherland at about that time. If anyone connects to these families, I'd like to know. I had the census results quite a while ago, but didn't know the connection until I got Eliza's mother's name! There are no Thomson's on Birsay in the 1851 Census at all so it seems that he was certainly not from Birsay. Will let you know if anything further comes up. There were 5 > children: James R (9), George McB. (7), Elizabeth Jane (6), Maggie Ann (4), > Edith Stewart (3). Hi! The 1851 census index of Harray lists a Betsy Robertson, age 19, born Harray, daughter of James Robertson, age 61, born Harray and Margaret age 55, born Harray living at Twargair?, Harray. There is also a Betsy Robertson, age 13, born Harray, daughter of Jean Robertson, widow, age 41, born Harray, living at Curkabreck? in the same census, but based on the names of the children, the former is more likely. Your age for Betsy from the census should help with the identification. There is a James Walter, age 9, born Stenness, son of James Walter age 49, born Germiston, Orkney and Betsy age 31, born Harray, living at Upper Dowack, Stenness. Also a James Walter, age 8 months, born Firth, son of Thomas Walter, age 33 born Stenness and Margaret, age 29, born Firth, living at Thread Needle House, Firth. Again, hopefully the age from the census will help to identify James J. Walter. Happy Hunting! Stephen

    2. I have finally been able to confirm that my grandmother, Elizabeth Jane Walter, was born March 1875 in Kirkwall. Her parents were: James J. Walter of Stenness and her mother was Betsy Anderson Robertson of Harray. At the time of the 1881 Census, the family lived on Victoria Street. There were 5 children: James R (9), George McB. (7), Elizabeth Jane (6), Maggie Ann (4), Edith Stewart (3). If anyone has links to this family, or can help me trace further back, I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance.
