Hi again - was sad that no one responded to an earlier post where I was hunting for LIDDELL relatives or genealogists. I have since learned that my Liddell relatives in the Orkneys were mostly Presbyterian ministers. The earliest one I ve found is a Francis Liddell, a minister in Edinburgh, father of Andrew Liddell. Does Liddell ring any bells with anyone? Hoping to hear from you, Deirdre Liddell Hay.
I Have the following in my family: Charles W. Bews married 18 Dec 1819 at Kirkwall & St Ola to Isabella C. Wards. I have been helping a friend research her family, and this is a last ditch attempt with these names( for a while anyway!! ). WILLIAM HARCUS married to JANET GROAT.their son John was born 1808 Eday&Pharay. JOHN HARCUS married JEAN SCOLLY. JOHN SINCLAIR married ELIZABETH SCOTT, son JOHN SINCLAIR was born about 1841, Westray.
Some of my family will be going to The Orkney Homecoming at the end of May, the beginning of June. I understand there will be some opportunities to work on family histories and to meet Orcadians with the same family name. I would like to collect some Bews Family Trees to take to Scotland. Any information obtained will be shared. My Bews family are descendents of James Bews and Helen Hunter. Thank you. Mary Bews
This is my first request. I am seeking information about James CORMACK (c1805-1893), his father James CORMACK (c1771 -?) & Catherine SLATER (c1774 - ?) the wife of the elder James and the mother of the other. These folks lived in Sanday or Lady. James CORMACK (c1805 -1893) m Jane DURAN (c1805-1883) on 29 March 1832. They had some nine children - one of whom married George SUTHERLAND in 1856. Any additional information would be most appreciated. Patricia (Pat please) Hutcheson Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Hutch4750@aol.com
Hi Geoff, I am also researching Mowats who came to Australia. Sounds like ours is a different branch though. Try contacting Alex Mowat <chef@sentex.net> as he is most helpful. There is also a Mowat site on the net, try www.tartans.com/clans/Mowat/mowat.html. Happy hunting! Hi Shyama, Thanks for the offer re Census records. Yes I have used the Census records before and have found all the direct descendants. However I am trying to branch out on the lines of brothers and sisters to see who they married, etc. Also I am stuck at the marriage of Donald Smith and Jean Allen in 1731. Donald Smith was born around 1706 in Caithness and I haven't been able to find a birth for him. I also do not have parents for Jean Allen. I actually have the 1851 census for Walls and Flotta at home and the 1841 is in the Society Library, the others I have ordered from the LDS at various times. Re my Sinclairs moving down south - These are the names and dates I have recorded in my tree, I don't know where they ended up. 3. 1885 Johanna Nicolson, b. 16.7.1885, d. 13.6.1963 in Brims, Walls and Flotta, Orkney + Alexander Sinclair m. ?, b. 1882, d. 2.12.1958 4. 1903 - Helen (Nellie) Wilson Sinclair, b. 1903 + Peter McLellan, m. ? 5. 1930 WilliamMcLellan, b. 1930, d. 4.1.1953 (drowned in Spain) 5. Hi Geoffrey, Do you know which island or parish in Orkney your Mowat's are from? In Walt Cursiter's transcription of the IGI the only reference I can find to any of your mentioned Mowat's is a christening of a daughter Janet to Wm Mowatt and Janet Allan on 9 Oct 1816 in the Parish of Holm and Paplay.
