    3. When the Hudson's Bay Company Archives sent me information on BAIKIES who had been recruited from Orkney, they also sent a bonus -- a list of some seventeen other men who worked for the HBC during the period 1792-1808. I have the Hudson's Bay Company reference numbers so that you can contact them for additional information. Plus, I can send you what details I have: BAIKIE: Thomas - Birsay, Orkney Served 1858-1875 Andrew - Costa, Evie, Orkney Served 1804-1822, age 28? 2. Doreen HOY - Thank you for the kind thoughts ! I LOVE feathers in my cap, however, Marion Paterson's addy was not in the copy/pasted instructions, and they were her instructions. She would probably be most pleased to get a quick note from you also - send one to her at: maripat2@san.rr.com/ If readers post it to the OTHER lists, maybe she will become famous ! <G>. Marion has given her kind permission to post them wherever they were needed. I felt that she had wonderful information at a critical time for some folks ! Obviously my local FHCenter needs them ! I am off to the Center now, to order microfilm for 1891 Census in Glasgow. I got 2 answers to my posts asking for help in identifying which of 6 films I needed to order - you are right about helpful listers ! One eMail was from a lady whose ancestors lived 4 numbers away from the house I sought and another from a FHC worker who knew they already had the film index ! When I am asked at Thanksgiving what I have been thankful for this past year - I will remember to mention Rootsweb as it led me to all of you ! - Meg Greenwood

    2. Ivan Sanders
    3. Hi List, I've seen once too many times, people losing their bookmarks so have 'come up with a plan'. I have put a copy of my links on the web. The aim of this page is to give a bookmark page which you can download and import into your own browser. It in no way is intended to take off Cyndi's List or any other major link site. It is aimed for those who: Have just started out and want some sites in their bookmark list as a head start while they feel their way around, and Those who some act of misfortune, have lost their bookmarks and don't want to spend tedious hours adding and categorising links. A couple of points: This is a direct export from my Genealogy bookmark list - you will find it does have an Ivan Sanders slant. Having said that, I will try and keep a general coverage of key sites. If you have some sites that you would like me to add, email me and let me know. If you like, let me know which category you think they should go in. If you would prefer, you can browse it on line as well. Regards, Ivan ________________________________ It is at http://www.alphalink.com.au/~isanders in the Genealogy section

    1. [ORKNEY-L] How to install the 1881 Census CDs properly
    2. Listers - the LANARK-D@rootsweb.com list I also subscribe to had a helpful post to insure the successful installation of the new 1881 CD set. I asked Marion Paterson of San Diego, California if I could post her instructions to the ORKNEY list, she agreed. I ask the listers to excuse the digression from our regular topics to 'software installation', however, the 'software' is directly related to the collection of ORKNEY data ! I still await my recently ordered CD set, but it has been available in the local Family History Center of the LDS Church for about a week now, however, it has been improperly installed. Users cannot get into Glasgow, or any of Scotland at all ! It seems this is a common problem, and her instructions are simple to follow. You might check these more closely if you cannot access some of your census CD set. The instructions are evidently not as user-friendly as they could have been. You do not get a manual, it must be downloaded from the net as per instructions. Once this install glitch has been accomplished, the whole world opens up before you ! Instructions follow: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is an 800 number for tech support at LDS and they are very helpful. Call 1-800-346-6044 There was a strange 'quirk' in the install directions. It is obscurely worded. You need to do an install from THREE CDs: 1. Resource File Viewer 2. CD #1 of the National Index 3. CD #1 of any of the British Census - I chose Disc #1, Scotland Region, Highland Counties (it came in the next to last 'flap' of the CD set). There are 4 paragraphs in the installation instructions, starting with #1 - 'Installing the Resource File Viewer'. Look at the third paragraph in the instructions. 'Installing the 1881 British Census and the National Index' at the top right side of the page. 1. Open the Family History Resource File Viewer 2. Select <Click here to add a Resource File to the list> 3. A window will appear telling you to insert your CD. Insert CD #1. 4. Click <OK> 5. Repeat these steps to install the National Index. What they DON'T tell you is that you can find Disc #1 of the National Index in the first flap of CD's. The Disc #1 of the British Census for Scotland Region is found in the NEXT-TO-LAST FLAP. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meg Greenwood - via Marion Paterson

I had a difficult time locating WHERE at this site: http://www2.davidmorgan.com/ the maps are found ! Scroll down the homepage until this line is found "Browse---Online Index---Site Index" YOU WANT THE SITE INDEX. Keep scrolling, more, yes keep going - BINGO - you will find a great lot of map choices and an example (pic) of the detail achieved on the maps. I have no idea about the shipping charges, though. This site appears to be helpful, offering to confirm the city you seek before ordering ! 2. Debbie - This is a long shot at best, but stranger things have happened in the world of Genealogy! My Mother's Father's brother was Thomas Halcrow. He was born in Kirkwall, Orkney in 1887. He married Margaret Oliver Cruickshank on Sept. 17, 1909 in GLASGOW. Their place of residence is listed in the Church of Scotland Register of Marriages as 111 Petershill Road in Glasgow. HER parents were William Cruickshank (occupation - Carter) and Margaret Cruickshank (previously Wilson) Maiden surname Oliver. I only thought this might be of interest, as she MIGHT have come from Orkney also, and they moved to Glasgow and then married. She is listed as a Confectionery Warehouse woman. Her age was the same as Thomas's at this wedding, 22 years old, so she must have been born the same year as he, or very near it. My Mother's family is WILSON related, and it is an Orkney name. If this sounds like a Cruikshank you need, I have no more information, just that from this Register. Oh, the Witnesses names were listed if you need them. Thanks for offering your family names - hope this helps ! 3. Janine ~ At British Pounds 4.20 for each map, that comes to about US$6.75 each. Shipping was another $16 or so, but I also ordered a couple back-ordered books. Alone, they said the maps would be shipped in 2-3 days. With the books I ordered it could take 6 weeks. The shipping for the maps alone was still pretty steep -- around 8 Pounds if I remember right. You can get onto Amazon.com.UK and go through the motions of putting your map order in you "shopping cart", entering you personal date, and then seeing what the total comes to. If you don't like what you see, just cancel it. The currencies are converting at about US$1.61 per British Pound. Linda * * * * * Janine wrote: > > Linda > How much do these maps cost in dollars? 3. Linda, If you will send me your email address I will send the tree from Christian and Thomas down to me. If I send a GEDCOM file can you use it? I have thought about Thomas and Catherine being twins, but I don't have any proof. I need to order the films from the Canisbay area. Best wishes, Andrea >My line from Mary Dunnet runs from her son Magnus, so I hadn't pursued >the Dunnets any further than just noting Christian Baikie/Thomas >Dunnet's children. Also, the children of Christian's brother Walter >Baikie, who married a Catherine Dunnet, born the same year as Thomas. I >don't have parentage for either of them -- do you? It's possible that >Thomas and Catherine could have been twins. And yes, I would like more >on this line -- thanks! > >
