Good and Bad News! Joseph Halcro and his family are listed on the 1881 cd set - unfortunately the surname is listed as "HALERS" -- I guess it was hard to read..... The place is listed as "Noins", to further complicate things. I found them by checking under "Robina Jane" and her ca. 1867 birth year on the actual census disc #1 of the Scottish Highland Counties.. [ It's also a good way to locate those missing daughter's whose married names are not known, if you have a less common given name to work with!] Happy Hunting! Listers - Have been waiting patiently for a replacement disc from the LDS chruch for the 1881 Census set. I did not receive Disc #3, the one with the letter ' H ' for my HALCRO/Ws. When it arrived yesterday, I find that the entire family was left off the CD set ! I know they existed, a family member paid an Archivist in 1985 for the information to be researched in Kirkwall at the Library. We have their complete listing at Orphir. This agrees with the previous census years. Joseph and Jessie HALCRO, and 7 of their 10 children are listed at Norns in Orphir. The children were: Thomas (19), Robina Jane (14), James (12), Peter (9), Joseph (7), Margaret (5), and Mary E. (2). The oldest son (William - 24) was already married, and living near Glasgow in Renfrewshire. We FOUND him there, and his wife, Isabella, with their eldest daughter, also an Isabella. Two remaining family members (John - 20 and Jessie Ann - 17) were probably employed elswhere, or had also left the Island, but they, too are not listed, even by the researcher. We know they survived, I guess I have to go to the 1891 census now. What is the rate of omission for this 1881 set? Have read speculations on other lists, have any other ORKNEY listers found their searches come up 'blanks' also? Thank you for any insights - Meg Greenwood - Oklahoma, USA

Hi All, I have compiled a DataBase of Scottish Parishes with their Parish numbers and IGI Batch numbers. This list being a DataBase can be converted from Alphabetical to Numerical making it most useful when only name or number is known. It can also be altered and added too. Please advise by DIRECT email to: <aamcgreg@es.co.nz> with the DataBase program you have installed. eg. MicroSoft Works 95/98. MicroSoft Excel. MicroSoft Access Lotus Approach. Any other. This ParishNo.Data will need to be unzipped with Winzip/PKunzip/Netzip or similar. Arthur McGREGOR Dunedin New Zealand.
I was interested in Janette's (janmax@vds.net.au) on a Robert Paterson GROUNDWATER, since a quick search doesn't turn up that name in the cursister.com listing of Groundwaters. My line within that listing goes back to: William Groundwater, b 16 January 1839, son of William Groundwater (2) and Mary Walker, Old Machar, Aberdeen. The father of William GROUNDWATER(2) was a William GROUNDWATER, soldier, who married an Isabella CAMERON. He is not in the Cursister.com listing either. He would have been born abt 1788, but I have not yet been able to find further information about him, eg. born in Orkney (Orphir?), or in Aberdeen? I would be interested in what information Janette has on GROUNDWATER, so see if I can make a connection. Looking for connections to James THOMSON, born Sanday 1816, son of Andrew THOMSON and Mary WILSON. James was married in Our Lady Parish 1847 to Jane SINCLAIR. At least eight children, born between 1849-1863, resulted from the marriage of James and Jane: Mary, Catherine, Andrew, Jane, Jemima, Ann, John, and Robert. Only two of these children have been traced so far. Mary THOMSON (child #1 of 8), born 1849 on Sanday, married first James Alexander LYALL, who died at sea in 1874. The two children from this marriage were Edith Merion Forbes LYALL and James Alexander LYALL. Mary married second Malcolm Charles ARTHUR with whom she had seven children. All emigrated to the USA in 1890s. Andrew THOMSON (child #3 of 8), born 1853, was a solicitor in Kirkwall. He had worked for the town clerk and later was the agent for crofters before the Crofters Commission as well as a member of the Kirkwall School Board and the County Council . At his death in 1894, he left a wife and three children [not yet identified].
Hello! I'm a new subscriber to this mailing list and I'm just about to start searching my Orkney ancestors. The only info that I have so far pertains to my Great Grandparents, John DICKSON and Georgina Ann DICKSON (formerly WARD). John Dickson was born on South Ronaldsay in 1872; Georgina Ann Ward was born on Hoy in 1885. They married on October 1, 1903. At some point, they moved to Toronto, Canada....but I'm not sure when. My Grandmother, as far as I know, was born in Toronto in 1915. Georgina Ann Ward's mother's maiden name was WEIR. Does any of this information ring any bells??
I tried to reach you through your web site that you gave regarding the Swanney, but I got a "couldn't send". I hope this reaches you. John Swanney about 1815 married Mary Muir. They had a daughter Mary. John Swanney born 1830 in North Haven, Orkney married Margaret Gray. Children were Annie Swanney, born March 9,1866. married Peter Elphinstone 1890 in Sanday, Orkney I hope this is of some help and reaches you. Joyce
Thanks to Janine I now know that the Rosanna Petrie I was looking for in sillardyke, Burray was born c 1858 to William Petrie and Christina Ross and known as Ann.
