David, Thanks so much for the information! I will check this out. Debbie
It seems that not only are Mary & Margaret sisters but Henry & George are brothers. There is a lady searching this family, Linda, but I have lost her email addresses due to a computer problems. I am also doing a database of all the Petrie's in Orkney and so far it is at about 850 people. I have alot of census info on these two families if you are interested. Listers - Have been listing the extra names from the 28 sheets of photocopies of 1891 Orphir, Kirkwall and Stromness census enumerations, gotten at Kirkwall Library last summer. The entire details will be listed with the Orcadians found on these sheets - it will keep you from waiting for me to answer, and I can list more sheets. I am trying to find out the origin of the village of Quindry, It is small settlement in the north of South Ronaldsay. It is about two miles south of St. Margaret's Hope. Does anyone know of any books about the Orkney Islands or South Ronaldsay in particular which might be of some help? Perhaps a library which might have a history of early settlers. Would be very happy if someone can help me with this. Ed Oldaker Mesa, AZ
Hello All! I'm looking for information on a George Will who married a Eliza Sclater Millar in Stromness 1871. The 1881and 1891 census lists her as a sailors wife and George is not mentioned. I assume this means he was out to sea at the time of census. I tried looking him up under royal navy on 1881 census but did not find him! Does anyone know where I might look for list of sailors from stromness? Could he have possibly been on a merchant type ship? Could sailor mean he was a fisherman? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Debbie

Message text written by INTERNET:ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com > Also can anyone tell me how to go about trying to find a death date and record for William? < Debbie, You should be able to find the death record for William on the Scots Origins database provided it was before 1897 and if you don't mind paying £6 to access the database. The event is almost sure to be recorded as statutory registration began in Scotland in 1856, but in view of the dates you have given he may still have been living in 1897 in which case you would have to write to New Register House in Edinburgh to get the information. Cheers John Kelday

William (a fine Scottish name) and others looking for the information. You have been provided with the address for the Orcadian. To contact the Orkney Tourist Board, the email address is <orkneytb@csi.com>. We have been in contact with them several times since our return to the States from Orkney. Yes, some of us actually go there. Our trip was to visit the farm and kirk where my wife's great-grandparents were buried. The Orkney Tourist Board was very helpful in finding us accomadations. We told them what our desires were, and the money bracket we were aiming at, and they called and got us a place that was not going to open to tourists for another week. You see, we went in March, ahead of the tourist season. Another web site would be ORKNET, which I believe is www.orkney.com, or something close. That was how we got into it in the first place. It is a wonderful place to visit, and as you mentioned South Ronaldsay, and if you don't mind self-catering or B & B, you might inquire of OTB if there is space at South Cara Farm. There are a number of links on ORKNET thast may prove valuable to your research. In Kirkwall, right behind the Tourist Board Office, is the Orkney Genealogic Society, and there rooms, and assistance, are available at certain times. Good luck, and a good trip. Meg I would love a scan if possible. I have looked up both Piere & Petrie on th LDS site and can't find any of them. I do know that there was one family of Petrie's from Orphir and everytime I come across 2 of the girls their ages never seem to fit. One of the sons was a David and he would be old enought to be your David's father. I will keep your email and keep an eye out myself. James should also be listed in the 1881 cenus and my local LDS centre has it on fiche and I will look it up next time I'm there. Thanks for the info. Janine - This name is clearly PIERIE. Have looked for PETRIE, unelss one of these enumerators hen scratchings clears up and becomes PETRIE, there are none on these extra sheets . Apologies ! The only other ' P ' listing is for PEACE. Creative thinking is a necessity when reading some of these names ! I have used the Cursiter site to help me get possibilities for a few - like VELZIAN ! MLSOU becomes WILSON, COSMO might become COCK, BRAION will probably be BROWN, but why is the 'dot' there? My HALCRO was listed as HALERS. There is a name that looks like CASKEY, but that ' K ' is strange. the legs that kick out are really more of a squiggle resembling a ' 3 '. Looks like an ' h ' with a kinked right leg ! And it is written precicely this way 6 times in a row. He was Minister of the Orphir Parish. Guesses are welcomed !!! Look at the listings for PIERIE, and if they are a good fit for your PETRIE family - eMail me, I can easily send a scan - or I can do it anyway if you want to see what it really looks like. Easily done. - Meg Greenwood
Janine, You wrote that you are searching the Petrie family from all of Orkney. It is possible that I have a Petrie in my direct line, but I am lacking some information to prove or disprove the link. I have traced all my line back to a marriage in 1791 between Robert Kelday and Mary Hervy in Kirkwall, but I don't know when Robert was born or who his parents were. The record I have prior to this event is a marriage in Kirkwall between another Robert Kelday and Isobel PETRIE on 19th January 1771but I can find no records of any children from this couple. Could they be my Robert's parents? Do you have any additional info? Regards John Kelday

I'm looking for information on William Campbell. In 1881 & 1891 census he was farmer of 100 acres in deepdale Holm Orkney. He married a mary Cruickshank who died giving birth to there only child Jane Campbell in 1857 then later married a Bathia Farquharson Nov 1861. I dont believe that William and Bathia had any children but had a niece by the name of Bathia Farquharson living with them when census records were taken. I believe William was born in Aberdeenshire but spent the remainder of his days in Deepdale Holm. Anyone out there with info of this family? Lets chat. Also can anyone tell me how to go about trying to find a death date and record for William? Debbie
William - It never entered my mind that you were trying to sell anything. I saw something mentioning the costs plus shipping and handling and thought how great it would be if I had the ability to view... I'm sorry if you misunderstood. I do, in fact, use the familysearch.org site frequently and have found quite a bit of information there. I recently had an opportunity to visit the LDS research center in Salt Lake but my time there was limited. I was under the impression that this was the only place I could see any of the other related data they have stored. For example, on the LDS site I have noticed that the names have reference and other numbers noted. I'm not quite sure what those mean or how they are to be used. I am still pretty much a novice at this research stuff, but I'm learning thanks to people like you. Thanks again for all the time and energy you took to fill me in.
Hello! I have no Petries in family line as of yet but, I do have a Janet Baikie b. 1811 Birdsay and married a David Miller Jan 1 1833 Stromness Orkney. Do you possibly have a connection with this Baikie. I do not have info on her parents! Thanks Debbie
