    3. Hi folks, I've put the new Orkney Gen Web site up at http://www.rendall.net/orkney/ it's not finished but I've got more information there than I had before. I have a collection of sites I'll be adding to the link page, and the research page, but I'd appreciate suggestions, and contributions especially links with descriptions, or short articles you care to write or have written about your research, you ancestors, their emigration, etc. (I volunteered to be the host of the Orkney Gen Web site, but I'm willing to share the duties) I only have the ability to test the site with Netscape Navigator 4.x and Internet Explorer 5.x I can't install Netscape Navigator 3.x or lower version of IE on my Windows 98 computer. I do want the site to be accessible to all browsers so if you have problems viewing the site on a lower version browser please let me know. If you do have an old browser, however, you really should consider updating it, besides security patches to both (more necessary with IE) they have terrific features over older browsers. You can always pick them up at a place like http://www.download.com Surname Query Boards Did you know that Rootsweb has established Surname boards? In fact they have established clusters of resources - mailing lists, obit queries, bible queries, bio queries, etc. I just discovered that there is a Rendall mailing list, so I subscribed, but I'm the only one so far, it seems. . . You should consider visiting http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/FamAssoc.html enter the surnames you're interested in to see if these resources have been established for the names, if not you may request that they be created. If they are not being maintained, you may be able to "adopt" them see http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/index.html for information And if you see names that should be included at the Orkney GenWeb, please let me know. Thanks Regards, Anne Rendall Volunteer list owner Orkney-L and host of Orkney Gen Web http://www.rendall.net/orkney/ Surname interests include: Westray Rendalls, Stevensons, Seatters, Coopers, Reids, and others.

    2. Phillip, my great grandfather was James Yorston Rendall. We know he emigrated from the Orkneys to Cleveland, Ohio USA (via Canada) sometime before 1900. With Ann Rendall's help, I have found a birth record for James Yorston Rendall, born September 16, 1855 in Evie and Rendall, Orkney, to William Rendall and Ann Irvine. James Yorston had a sister, Ann, born February 22, 1835 at Evie and Rendall. You will find these records in the Rendall Files at Ann Rendall's website, Rendall.net. The dates don't seem to fit, but maybe there is a connection. What do you think? Incidentally, I am the Vermonter to whom Ann Rendall referred in her reply to you of August 7, 1999. Don Rendall

What constitutes an Orkney surname? Well, I guess ones that have only, or a primary association with Orkney, but it's a tough call on some, I know. I no longer have my edition of Orkney Surnames, but there are close to 300 that Gregor Lamb identifies as being Orcadian. Some like Stevenson and Robertson are common other places as well. So far as the place names based on Orcadian surnames, I'm not looking for a definitive link, just a probable one, since people who emigrate often are joined in the same area by others from their homeland, I imagine there are clusters around the world where there are Orkney place names. I was wondering if people happened to know of any such place names from their research or live near any, I do recall hearing from Canadians about the frequency of Orkney place names in certain regions, but I didn't keep record of them.
