    3. Hi, I ran across a birth certificate today which sounds like an Orkney name to me ( Oh, by the way, I see there is an Orkney Springs in Virginia, USA). This baby was born on 14 June 1895 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Her name is Inga Thomson, parents James Thomson & Helen Flett. James was a manager for the Hudson's Bay Co.. If this is your Thomson branch, I'll send you the certificate. Pam -- Pam Thomson of BC, Canada New email address: as of August pamthom@intergate.bc.ca

    3. Hello Tracey, This is in response to your interest in >MORWICK/MARWICK- Rousay My ggggrandfather was Hugh Craigie of Rousay, b. ca 1776, died 3 July/1861, parish of Rousay and Egilsay he was the son of Hugh Craigie, Farmer and Janet Marwick, of Rousay. (Aren't death certificates wonderful) (Hugh the son married Margaret Murray 8 Nov 1799 and his daughter Margaret Craigie was my gggrandmother). Same Marwicks, maybe? Their descendants, like those of so many Orcadians, are spread from Australia to south Africa. 3. Dear David, Let me be among those to congratulate and encourage you in the great work you are doing with the 1851 Census indexing for Orkney. As my great-grandmother was born on Sanday and her family is ennumerated in the 1851 census, I'll be most interested in seeing the index for that island. Thank you for your invaluable contribution to Orkney family history. All best wishes, Doug Nicol, Santa Rosa CA

    3. G'day Caroline, I've checked my indexes to the 1851 Census of Orkney for all parishes except Shapinshay, Stronsay and Westray which I've yet to index. I didn't find any Andrew Tait aged 4, the nearest being a 13 year old in South Ronaldshay. Incidentally my index to Sanday should be going for microfiching this week, and so available for distribution in a week or so. (Hermes Precisa have sometimes done the microfiching in as little as 48 hours of my walking in off the street with my file !! Excellent service by a large national company to a small customer). Cheers from Perth, David "Could anyone please help me link the Surnames "Tait" and "Smellie". My GGGrandfather's name is Andrew Smellie Tait and I know that he was named after someone..... but I'm not sure who. Ackwarding to the 1881 census his mother was Margaret Wick. The Andrew in question was born on the 14.Jan.1847 and died 1911."

    1. [ORKNEY] About scanning the 1654 map
    2. mjc
    3. About scanning the 1654 map To make it legible on the net - the problem is no matter how high you scan it a monitor will only display at about 75 dpi. Instead of scanning the entire map do it in small portions(like each island). When scanning, set your out put at 200% - 300% - or as high as you can. To keep size down, scan at greyscale rather than colour. But it may still be illegible. The real solution (though you can't view on the internet) is to scan - again in small bits, at 200+% and greyscale at min. 300 dpi -- and save as a tif. Put in a link to the bits on your website and viewers can download them to their computers and print out hopefully a legible copy for themselves. You may want to try this first to see if my % and dpi suggestions are high enough.... mjc

    2. Kaye
    3. Hello everyone, I am new to this list. My name is Kaye Soulsby and I live in Melbourne Australia. I and am bedridden with a long illness and found I finally have the time to follow up a long held interest in genealogy. I am primarily interested in the Peace but also links with Mathieson and Ferguson family of Orkney (especially Greenock and Kirkfell areas). My ggg g/father James Peace occ.Shipwright b.1786 d.12/11/1864. He married Margaret Mathieson but I have no further information of her. I suspect that their son Robert Peace had siblings, but have no details other than apparently one sister became a doctor. My gg g/father was Robert Peace b.8/1/1822 West Parish of Greenock, d. 19/07/1908 Auckland New Zealand. He married Margaret Sharp Ferguson (poet and music teacher) on 12/11/1845, b. unknown d. 12/4/1897 Auckland New Zealand. Margaret Sharp Ferguson was daughter of John Ferguson (Shipbuilder) and Margaret Sharp -- no further details. Daughter Margaret was disinherited when she married Robert Peace as he was considered beneath her in status. They had a son Andrew Peace b.12/12/1846 Greenock then left Greenock in 1847 and sailed to St John's, Newfoundland. The following surviving children were born in Newfoundland: James, Robert, John, Alexander, Margaret, Sarah, and Colin. They lived for a time in the Governor's cottage. Along with a few other families they chartered the vessel "Clara" and sailed to New Zealand in 1861 they had 1 more child Neale in Auckland NZ. I have a copy of the journal made whilst on board. I am interested in any details of the abovementioned. So far I have checked the Scottish BDM on-line which gave marriage details of Robert and Margaret S. Ferguson -- but was unable to find any further details. I would be very grateful for any assistance or suggested strategies (although my illness limits me to on-line resources only). They had three sons: William, George and James. William went to Canada with the HBC about 1836 and George followed him, with his family, about 1864. My information about James who stayed behind is somewhat limited (and I'm on holiday and don't have the info at my fingertips) but I do believe that James Pottinger, brother of George and William stayed in Westray his remaining days. Around the turn of the century, there was communication between my g grandfather James Pottinger and his cousins James, Isabella (aka Tomima I believe) and also Mary Drever. James, Isabella and Mary were siblings all of whom received a small portion of an inheritance. There was no mention of the others. I will check things out more closely when I get back from holidays and forward any additional info to you, if you think it helpful. If you think there is a connection, I would be interested in your line of the Pottingers. Your name seems familiar. Perhaps we have discussed the Pottingers before?

    3. Dear Ed, Although my Budge ancestors came from the Orkneys, I believe I read something somewhere that stated that the earliest reference to a Budge in Scotland was a Magnus Budge who had some position (magistrate?) in Caithness in the 1400s. Sorry I can't be more specific. The book I read it in contained Scottish surnames and their earliest occurrences, and the person who owned the book had a booth at a mall. He was there for a short time only. His business involved printing out family coat-of-arms, crests, etc. I saw him at the same spot earlier this year, so I assume that I might be able to get a name and the next time he's slated to return from the mall management. 3. Ken, Here is the information on Andrew Smellie Tait posted around 2 August. Cheers, Jan, Canberra Your Andrew Smellie Tait was almost certainly named after the brother of my gggfather. Andrew Smellie (the son of Rev. James Smellie of St. Andrews parish, Orkney) was born at St. Andrews in 1820. He was ordained as the first Free Church minister of Deerness Parish in 1847, and died there in 1851. There is a large memorial to him in the Skaill church burial yard in Deerness. I can provide more details, if you are interested. I also know that there are Taits still very active in the church in Deerness.
