    3. Jackie How did you find out your ancestors where from Braehead and do you know what year they where there???? If you used the census then what ever parish you found them under that is the area of Orkney your Braehead would be. One of the Petrie's I found lived in Braehead in 1841 in the South Ronaldshay parish. As I think someone else has already written, there will probably be more than one Braehead. Not only can the term Brae be used to designate a steep slope but on occasions can be found relating to mounds. The existence of Nether Braehead on South Ronaldsay would probably indicate there were even a few on that island alone. -- Sigurd Towrie Blackhall - Kirbister - Stromness - Orkney Heritage of Orkney: http://www.orkneyjar.com ============================================================ EASY and FREE access to your email anywhere: http://Mailreader.com/ ============================================================

    3. There are probably many Braeheads in Orkney and Scotland generally - the name derives from the Scots word "brae" meaning a steep slope, hillside or river bank. There is a farmhouse, "The Braehead", on the hill above the western shore of the bay of St Margarets Hope, South Ronaldsay. The property was aquired by Alexander KENNEDY in 1763. His descendants, including ALLAN, BANKS and SINCLAIR families, lived there until at least the 1930s. __________________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia

    3. Hi Jackie ~ I have a copy of an old map (Victorian?) that shows a "Manse" on South Walls, midway between Lythes and Burnhouse. (If you were to divide South Walls into eighths it's in the upper left eighth.) I've looked but don't find an "Old Manse" anywhere. I bought my Landranger ordinance maps through Amazon.com (www.amazon.co.uk) Regards, Linda Jackie Middleton wrote: > > Hi there, > > I was wondering if anyone on the list who has access to a detailed map of Walls would be so kind to tell me where 'Old Manse' is located? > > I have searched all over the web, looking for a detailed map of Walls, and I have come up empty-handed! 3. Hi Jackie, The Ordnance Survey Maps should show the details that you require. I only have a photocopy of the part that I was interested in from Saltness across to Melsetter and down south to Brims Ness. The Manse is not shown on this part but all the places where my relatives lived are so you probably need the part of North Walls above that which I have. Depending on where you are your local library should probably have copies of the Ordnance Survey maps. I photocopied mine at the National Library in Canberra. Good luck, Jan, Canberra, Australia. -----Original Message----- From: Jackie Middleton <jackiemiddleton@home.com> To: ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com <ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, 7 September 1999 4:05 AM Subject: [ORKNEY] town location??? >Hi there, > >I was wondering if anyone on the list who has access to a detailed map of Walls would be so kind to tell me where 'Old Manse' is located? > >I have searched all over the web, looking for a detailed map of Walls, and I have come up empty-handed! South Walls was a tidal island to the south of Hoy until the causeway was constructed the permanently connect the two. The name is a Scottish mistranslation - it should be Southvoe but the Scots mapmakers assumed the pronunciation of "voe" (which is like va') meant "wall". North Walls is the area to the south of Hoy - originally known as Vagaland - the land of Bays. -- Sigurd Towrie - Blackhall - Kirbister - Stromness - Orkney E-Mail: sigurd@orkneyjar.com Orkneyjar - The Heritage of Orkney: http://www.orkneyjar.com

Soon I will have #5 and # 7 since I found a great place on the internet that sells them at the same price as if I were in GB. www.mapsworldwide.com They have a sale on right now and if you live in GB the postage is free. I am looking for: Upper Liddi, Tankerness. Manse Cott, Evie - is it possible where the little cross is nearby to the cemetery? Calcet, Tankeness. Gallowhall, Kirkwall. Clay Loan, Kirkwall. Loretto, Kirkwall. Also, is there anyway to find out the names of men who have been gardeners at Balfour Castle, Shapinsay? Thank you. Best wishes, Andrea Ferguson
