    3. Hello Alan, The pound Scots was originally a coin on par with the English pound from the reign of James VI (I). It gradually lost value until it was only worth 1 shilling 8 pence, yet prices were often still figured in the Scottish currency. The two difference values were differentiated by "Scots" or "sterling" as in "three pounds Scots" or "twelve pounds sterling." Hope this helps sort it out for you. Doug Nicol, Harvey's Lake PA

    3. I think you'll find that the Scottish Pound (or Mark) came into being independently to the English Pound. When I don't know. The Act of Union 1707, whereby the Kingdoms of Scotland and England merged to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain, also included a clause for the "assimilation" of Scottish weights and measures, including currency by their English equivalents. So the English Pound or Sterling became legal tender in Scotland in 1707, however evidence in the Parish Registers of Walls shows that the "Pound Scots" was still circulating as late as the 1790s. In the 1740s, the going rate for a "bond of good behaviour" was 2 crowns or 10/- sterling. In the 1780s and 90s, the bond is £3 Scots (sometimes £4), while the sterling equivalent is 6 shillings and 8 pence. There is even a reference in 1789 that only 5/7d was received as included in the coins were "1 bad shilling and 1 bad penny" causing a shortfall from the 6/8d. (If a child was born less than nine months after marriage, the bond would be "forfeit to the session box by reason of anti-nuptial fornication".) Today, the Bank of England issues currency for England and Wales, while about five retail banks in Scotland have the right to issue currency there. Then there's northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey which al have their own currency rights. All are based on the Pound Sterling issued by the Bank of England. 3. Jackie, as far as misspelling of names goes, that is a fairly mild one. My particular research has come up with ten different surname spellings - sometimes changing three or four times in one person through their life! As for forenames - it is a real minefield; Jacobina becomes Jakabina, Elizabeth - Betsey - Betsy -Betty - Lillibet - Lily. One of my ancestors who comes from Denmark started off as Vilhelmine and ended up as Minnie on official documents. Good luck! Regards Sarah

    3. Hi there! I've been looking for information on the marriage of my Joseph DICKSON and Jane CLOUSTON when I came across an entry on a website on the net. www.cursiter.com I found an entry there for a Joseph DICK marrying a Jean CLOUSTON on Jan. 4, 1855, Firth and Stenness. The place and date are about where I would find my date. Is there any chance that this entry could be mine? I have come across several misspellings of names, so I'm curious. I'd like to hear opinions from my fellow listees. Thanks! Jackie

    3. I am aware that there a Scots pound while there was also a Sterling pound. Could SKS advise when the Scots pound was introduced, confirm that it was then the equivalent of Sterling, and tell me when it disappeared. I believe it was eventually worth only 1/12 of Sterling. I have a reference to it as a pawn in a Birsay marriage in 1783. Alan alan.spence@xtra.co.nz alan.spence@xtra.co.nz

    1. Re: [ORKNEY] Location of Sightbill Cemetery please
    2. GGfather was William HALCROW. He was born in Orphir in 1856. His headstone says : In Loving Memory of my Dear Husband, WILLIAM HALCROW who died 10th May, 1911. Aged 54 years. Interred in Sightbill Cemetery. 111 Petershill Road. Isabel Halcrow. I am asking if this refers to the possible fact he is not buried at the same location as this headstone. I do not know the location of the headstone,in fact, I am not even sure this is really what the real marker says - this is a copy of what looks like a 3" x 4" card with decorative scripts included in the research done by an Orkney researcher in 1985. The above words are listed on it, the 'back' reveals a touching poem about a light being gone and a vacancy left in the home because of his passing. Was this a Funeral Card ? Our family always thought that this 3" x 4" black and white copy with a small one-eighth inch black border was the image of the headstone or grave marker. Isabel HALCROW was his wife, maiden surname WILSON from Stromness. Is Sightbill Cemetery near Orphir ? Family rumor says it was in Glasgow. We never knew he traveled there, but it is possible. Suggestions welcomed - Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma < finn@ionet.net > Sighthill Cemetary is in Glasgow. It is in the Springburn area. It is at Springburn Rd. and Keppochhill Rd. Petershill Rd. runs into Springburn Rd. opposite Sighthill Cemetary. What you have sounds like a normal funeral card. Hope this helps. Regards, Jim Corse. </XMP>

    3. Hello listers, My GGG grandparents William HEDDLE & Euphemia LEASK were married in 1809 in Stromness. Their daughter Anne Wylie HEDDLE b.1828 m. Thomas RUSSELL in 1855 again in Stromness. I would be interested to hear from anyone researching the same lines. When I first saw the name Euphemia I thought what an unusual name, easier to track than the usual Marys & Anns etc. but from a little look at the records it would seem that Euphemia was quite a popular name in the area at that time, has anyone else found this ? Looking forward to hearing From Barbara in Kent UK

Thanks, Evelyn ******************************************************************* Evelyn - You Bet ! And the Archive feature has just been extended to almost all lists subscribe-able. I will post this to the List, as you are probably not the only one new here. Go To : http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Enter the name of whatever list you want to search (you do NOT have to be subscribed to it to do a search) : ORKNEY-L or orkney-l <== this is an 'L' Then enter your keyword(s) and see what you get. I used " 1891 Census Extras " (NO quotation marks). I just tested this and looks like they all showed up. You can search for a surname, or city, or whatever you want to try. I will be entering more, there are about 8 more sheets to do - this latest posting was 2 sheets worth. If you want to search other lists, the whole enchilada of lists is posted at : http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/index.html Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma, USA >
