Hello All, I also am researching the Groat line, though a little stuck right now. I have a Malcom Groat that emmigrated from the Orkneys in 1826 and settled in Bothwell, Orford township, Kent County (I believe), Canada. He became a Grant at some point during this emmigration, for unknown reasons. He was born in 1826. This is per the "Illustrated Hist. Atlas of the Counties of Essex and Kent, 1881, page 108" This was the first piece of hard evidence I have found on old Malcom. Can't seem to get anything on him prior to the voyage. I would be very interested in comparing notes with anyone else who is tracking this line. I have some stuff posted at www.grantgg.com/~grantda . Sarah Contact me off-list if you want copy of the information I have on Hourie, which includes notes and locations of gravestones as well as photos of farm that Captain Hourie lived at etc. I checked this lot out on one of my regular trips home, on behalf of someone else. Hi Catriona, I was wondering which Groats you are interested and also what families from Longhope and around what period of time. Hello Peter - My Mary Shearer (myggggrandmother)was born in 1799 in Caithness, Orkney I believe. Her parents were George Shearer and Christina Dunnett according to her death certificate, which I have. She died in 1880 in Kirkwall, Orkney. She married Thomas Stickler in 1830 in Kirkwall and they had 3 children: William, Peter and Mary. Mary Shearer Stickler is my gggrandmother. At this time I know little about the Shearers. I have been in touch with a 3rd cousin (descendent of William Stickler) who says that Mary Shearer's parents are actually William Shearer and Christian Dunnett. So far, I don't see any connections, but we'll see. Keep me posted. G'day Karen Welcome to the list. I also have Shearers in my background. Mary Shearer [sometimes spelt Sherar] was born in 1806 in Shapinshay in the Orkney's, she married William Scott in 1827 and then in 1849 they and their nine children emigrated to Australia. It would be great if you could find a connection between us. Regards Peter > Hello - I'm a brand new subscriber, and want to introduce myself. Karen Acker - Hi, I have been a member of this Orkney bunch for about a year now. I am hopeful about the SHEARER name in your past - there was a marriage into my HALCRO family by a Peter SHEARER. Peter married Jessie HALCRO who was born in Orphir, Orkney on Feb 20, 1864. Peter was supposedly a childhood sweetheart of hers. They married and moved to America. They had 3 children - Harry, Archie and Mabel. If you have any connections to these SHEARERs, I would just love to know more - Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma

In my journey of searching for my Dickson ancestors, it seems that there aren't very many! Some Orkney surnames keep cropping up, but Dickson doesn't. I've seen on some websites the surname Dick...what are the chances that Dickson was once just Dick? Jackie

David, sorry for "butting in", I saw that you were from Perth, Australia - presumably researching your Orkney ancestors. I am also living in Perth - South Perth actually and am researching my Hourie/Howrie mob. How do you find information over here - do you do most of your digging on the net? Any information gratefully accepted! Thanks Cheers Sarah
Just have to add my little bit of information to this good advice about ordering the microfilm of the Parish Registers - if you pay for the microfilm 3 times, it will STAY permanently at the FHCenter and will not be sent back to its original site. This is at least the policy in Oklahoma, I assume the other continental states, also. Not sure about Alaska and Hawaii. Fiche stay, films return unless rented 3 times. Please post for me if this is not the case elswhere. I tend to keep the films with geographical areas covered - like censuses. There is a good chance of finding another lead on the same film, and having to order it all over again anyway. Knowing the immediate neighbor's names is sometimes of worth, as they just might be relatives - not uncommon in rural settings. - Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma, USA
If you go to your local Mormon family history library in Vancouver, you'll be able to order a copy of the South Ronaldsay Parish Registers on micro-film. You'll be able to read the entire film for yourself. The same goes for census records. The cost will only be a few dollars. This is much, much cheaper than engaging a Record Agent to read the very same film. Also, a record agent will miss items that are obvious to you. If you're really keen, then you can buy a copy of the film from Edinburgh for £40. A book of postcards belonging to John Harcus who died en route to Aust, 1928, bur Capetown, South Africa included several referring to Mr and Mrs Sinclair and Mary Sinclair, presumably relatives of John living at 16 Shore St., Kirkwall, Orkney around 1911, 1912 and 1914. Any information about Sinclair and their relationship to John appreciated. Alice.
I am researching John Harcus,b c1867,family legend says in Orkney Islands, mother Janet Harcus, and his wife, Janet Thompson, 1894, Edinburgh. John and Janet had two children - Mary, mar Australian soldier, J Redden, emigrated to Aust; Jock, also emigrated to Aust. John died en route to Aust, bur Capetown, South Africa, 1928. Any information would be appreciated. I am enquiring on behalf of my aunt, dau of Mary Redden nee Harcus, who would like to contact relatives especially any of Janet Thompson. Thank you, Alice.
I am trying to find the death date of Molly NICOLSON. She married James INKSTER 21 Jan 1796 in Houton, Orphir, Orkney. I believe they had a son, James INKSTER, b 14 Aug 1796. The father, James INKSTER, had immigrated to Canada (with HBC) and had a son with a native woman by 1807. Had Molly died? Did he just leave her behind? Or are they not the same James INKSTER. Thanks for any clues. Carol Wright/AB - ---------------------------------------------------------- March West Mail - Powered by BigMailBox.com - http://www.bigmailbox.com
