What time period did the birth occur in? My GG-gfather, William Smellie, from St. Andrews, Orkney, was the medical doctor at York Factory from 1845 to 1849. Message text written by INTERNET:ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 22:52:04 -0700 From: "Sasse" <rednest@gilanet.com> Hello, I'm looking for any Stevenson's. I started out looking for Betsy Stevens, only to find out that her name is really Marguerite Stevenson. The only list where I can find any Stevensons' listed is the Orkney lists. I believe Marguerite Stevenson was born at York Factory, Hudson bay, but her father, John Stevenson may be from Orkney. Her mother's name is shown as Mary Indian. Does anyone know of any John Stevenson, or any Stevensons, from Orkney who migrated to the York Factory area? OK, as long as we are listing again - here is my Orphir, Orkney family : Joseph HALCRO (1822-Orphir) married Jessie JOHNSTON (1834-Walls) in Orphir, 1855. They had 10 children : William, John, Thomas, Jessie, Robina, James, Peter, Joseph, Margaret and Mary. All births were from 1856 - 1879. My line is from the eldest son, William (born 1856, Orphir). He had 7 children (born in Orkney) who ended up in Glasgow, Canada and America. The families that intermarried with the HALCROs were : WILSON (Isabella from Stromoness married William in 1879), GROUNDWATER (Margaret married Thomas HALCRO in the late 1880s), SHEARER (Peter married Jessie HALCRO), GUNN (Morrison married Robina HALCRO mid 1880s). The other names we do not know. I am most curious to know if any HALCRO(W)s of this line remain in Orkney. We are led to believe they all left. I find that hard to understand - ALL of them ? Surely there are some HALCRO(W)s left from our brood still hanging on there. <g> Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma, USA
We all need to remember to change the subject lines when posting, this discussion list is archived and it will be less useful to others in the future if we leave old subject lines when posting new subjects. John was a common name. I have some Stevensons in our line and the research of two Stevenson cousins. There were some Stevensons that emigrated to Canada, and some where in my archived email I have a reference to a book on the Stevensons written by some Stevensons in Connecticut - send me an email after the holidays directly to anne@rendall.net and I'll look for this information for you. You should also contact the Hudson Bay Company for information - perhaps your ancestor worked for them - many Orcadians did, if so they will have a record. Anne

I'll resubmit my surname of interest - ISBISTER. Looking for ancestors of Hugh Isbister (later Ivester) born c. 1755 in Orkney Islands. Came to America c. 1775 as an indentured - on a ship called The Marlborough arriving in Savannah, Georgia. Hugh Isbister Ivester eventually settled in North Carolina.
I'm interested in Kirkness, but never see anything on that name, so I don't post anything. Hello, I suppose part of the quietness is because of the holidays coming up on us and I agree that we should post the names we are interested in periodically so here are mine: I'm looking for family named Stewart. My grandfather was Charles Thomas Stewart and I think his parents were James Stewart and Jane/Jean Lennie and I think from Stromness. Charles was one of a large number of children - I know there was an Adelaide but she never married and there was a James who had a daughter, Maysie/May who married a Frank Elliott and moved to England. The Sinclair/Drever family is connected with Knockhall Farm in South Ronaldsay and I'm doing pretty well on the Sinclair line but always looking for additional family members. I'm not doing as well with Drever. Outside of Orkney names I'm also looking for family of Finlay Williams, fourth son of Julia MacAskill (McAskill) of Inverness and Peter John Williams (I think from Greenock). So, if any of you know of any of these people I'd love to hear from you. Evelyn Sinclair Williams Hlabse Richmond Heights, Ohio, USA
Dear Ms Rendall, I beleive that it is just about time that you were made aware, by some of your list subscribers, just how truley appreciated, you and the fine service, are. We are a silent group, us list subscribers. I suppose that we just go along not really questioning or even concerned about all of the effort that you must put into the maintainance of this list. The Orkney list is just there, because it's there. Well, Ms. Rendall, I for one really wish to thank you. Please keep up the good work. Respectfully Mel Rich
Hi Jan, I sent out the test this weekend. It would seem that alot of people are really busy right now which is understandable. But I also think that your email is a reminder to us all to repost our interests every so often. So here are mine. ALEXANDER JOHNSTON b.abt 1785 Mar. MARGARET MOAR b. abt 1789 Children: JOHN JOHNSTON b. 1815 Upper Grindalay MARY JOHNSTON b. 1813 Upper Grindalay ISOBEL JOHNSTON b. 1811 Upper Grindalay There is evidence to suggest that Margaret remarried a Caesar Johnstone and had four more children. I am still investigating that. ISOBEL Mar. 1834 to ROBERT SPENCE Children: WILLIAM JOHNSTON SPENCE b. 1836 ROBERT SPENCE b. 1840 ANN MOAR SPENCE b. 1838 ANN Mar. 1860 to WILLIAM PEACE - Birsay, Orkney Children: PETER PEACE b. 1864 Birsay MARY PEACE b. 1867 Birsay BARBARA PEACE b. 1870 Edinburgh WILLIAM PEACE b. 1874 Edinburgh Happy Holidays! What is happening with the Orkney List? Is no mail coming through or is no one interested in Orkney Genealogy? I seem to be swamped with Inverness mail and have just noticed no posts from Orkney since the test messages from various people questioning what was happening. Names I am interested in mainly are Smith, Nicolson, Ritch from Hoy. Other minor lines are Sinclair, Anderson, Craigie, Stout, Mellis, Mowatt, Wallace, Ross, Groat, Wilson, Thomson, Walls.
