    3. Can I suggest that you look at http://www.cursiter.com - Walt Custer's home page - he has amassed a wealth of information on Cursiters and variant spellings. This also applies to anybody researching any "Orcadian" surname - Walt has put a lot of information on his site, freely available to all. Kind regards. 3. David, Thank you very much for the information about researching the tea clipper. However, after composing a letter to the archive, I realized that I don't know how to pay them if they request a fee for looking up information. What is the currency of Newfoundland? Canadian? If I send them an SASE, what postage will I use for return mail? Are the records availabel electronically? Do they have e-mail? (I didn't think they did.) Thanks again, Kate ----- Original Message ----- From: David Armstrong <davidrli@iinet.net.au> To: <ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 1999 8:56 AM Subject: Re: [ORKNEY] Tea Clipper > The crew agreements should be at the Maritime History Archive, Memorial > University, St John's, Newfoundland. > > Cheers > David, > Perth, Western Australia > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Yarbro Family <yarbro@wctc.net> > To: <ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 1999 10:33 PM > Subject: [ORKNEY] Tea Clipper > > > > A cousin passed away before explaining to anyone what all her genealogy > notes meant. Suggest you mush on down to the LDS FHC nearest you and request film #0912263 which will contain his discharge and military records. That is, if you do not already have them! Unfortunately, today I was reading the films just before and just after this one! They are in alpha order and I did not request the "H's". Next, turn the Huskies toward the local library and get an inter-library loan (or whatever Canada does that is similar) and request HIGHLAND SOLDIER 1820-1920 by Diana Henderson ISBN 0859762173 John Donald, Publisher, Edinburgh. This is fantastic book for the flavor of the military regiments and seriously needs genealogical indexing. She has numerous footnotes. One chart shows that not many recruits came from Orkney! 3. Hi listers: I have been watching and waiting for some one to mention Hepburn. My gggrandfather Peter Hepburn was born in Kirkwall 9th Jan, 1814. He joined the 93rd Highlanders when he was 16. He was sent to the West Indies 2 years later and he came to Toronto Ont. Canada in 1938 where he bought his discharge. I have reason to beleive that his parents were John Hepburn and Elizabeth Caithness married 23 March 1799. John's parents may have been James Hepburn and Anne Flett married 16 Dec. 1766.. I am trying to trace any relatives he may have had in Scotland. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. If anyone has any ideas , I am open to suggestions. 3. I have 'lurked' on this list for a while, content to read and get a feel for the general discussion, seeing 'where everyone is coming from'. I have only contributed twice, both in response to others messages, and the responses which came from that were overwhelming for my own research. So, despite the fact that I am repeating the previous message Ann - - - - - thank you...... Catriona (interests posted in another message to keep on-topic)

My GG Grandmother was Cecilia Wood Garrioch (sometimes spelt Garrick) born in Orkney Kirkwall according to the 1861, 1881, and 1891 censuses. From the various ages given she should have been born between 1812 and 1814. Her parents were Robert Garrioch (Ships Carpenter) and Susannah Sutherland according to her death certifcate 1891 Edinburgh. She married Alexander McLennan (House painter) in Caithness Wick 12 May 1832 and they had the following children. By 1861 they were living in Turrif Robina McLennan May 1833 Wick John 1837 Dundee Margaret Massie 1840 Wick My great grandmother Alexander Tulloch May 1843 Wick James Garrick 1847 Wick Robina I suspect died as an infant John I think emigrated to America James moved to London and travelled frequenly to New York where Emeline Mclennan (daughter)was living in 1887. James had at least 3 children Cecilia, Garrick and Lindsay who was a photographer in Wilsden. Hoping for a lead Isobel Stammers
