    1. [ORKNEY] Penicuik??
    2. Jackie Middleton
    3. An uncle just sent me some old photographs of my ancestors. With one of them, he has written that a certain ancestor was a Police Sgt. in Penicuik. As far as I know, there isn't a Penicuik in the Orkneys.....it's near Edinburgh. Is there another Penicuik that I haven't yet found? I have no records as of yet, of any of my Scottish ancestors coming from Scotland proper.....so I'm a bit confused. 3. I'd like to thank David, Elizabeth, Karen and Myles for their tips on how I could locate my ancestors shipping records. So far, I haven't found much information at my end about when/where they left the Orkneys, but at least your suggestions should help me in my quest. Merry Christmas everyone! Jackie

    2. Hi Jim, Have you tried http://www.cursiter.com/Peace.txt. It will give you extensive info. on births. You can start by looking up your Orkney family. I had a quick look but could not see Izabella there. But it's a good place to keep in mind. I have a WILLIAM PEACE who was my GGGF probably born around 1838. He and my GGGM were married in Orkney. Keep William in mind. I have not as yet followed up on finding his parents so there well may be a connection. They had four children MARY, PETER, BARBARA and WILLIAM. Remember www.familysearch.com and also www.origins.net. Good Luck with your search! Catherine

    3. Hello, cousin! I am indeed that Rena, and I remember my dad talking about his cousin Nea. I love the thought of my father being babysat. I didn't know about the reunions but add me to the list. I'll definitely come. I was just in Wisconsin visiting my mother's relatives this last October. The leaves were gorgeous! I was there about a week after peak but got some great photos anyway. I'm hoping to move within the next month, so use my email address to keep in touch. When I move, I'll send you better contact information. My uncle Carlton lives in California not far from me. I'll see what he knows about the family history. Since I've been packing to move, I don't have everything where I can get to it right now. Rena rena.leith@sun.com > Rena, > You are working from the same document that I am. 1. Re: [ORKNEY] ports for Canada-bound ships
    2. David Armstrong
    3. G'day Jackie, The answer to your question depends very much on the reason for voyage, the destination and time of year. Commercial passenger ships would be sailing from Liverpool and Glasgow. These ports were within easy reach of Orkney owing to the fishing vessels off loading their catch in the South. (My Great Grandfather and his siblings returned to Orkney in the 1860s by fishing vessel from North Shields after the death of their mother). The time of year would determine the port of arrival as the St Lawrence freezes over in winter. So winter arrivals could be at Halifax or even Boston. The Hudsons Bay Company ships sailed from Stromness often for ports in the Canadian Arctic and for this reason early settlement in Manitoba was from North to South, not East to West. Then there would be the ships that went around Cape Horn to the west coast. I've several Orcadian cousins who's first arrival in North America was in California or Washington or British Columbia. As regards passenger lists, don't hold your breath looking for departure lists in Great Britain, they're very rare. You're far more likely to find an arrival list in Canada or the USA. 3. Rena, You are working from the same document that I am. It is the Leith Family Book. I am looking for an identity for J.D. LEITH and for his ancestors. The cousin I mentioned and I are descended from Margaret Ann Leith, the daughter of William in the second generation. She married her second cousin, William Leith, so the name remained the same for one more generation. I would also like to know more about that William Leith. I see by my Family Book that there is a Rena Leith who is the daughter of Donald Leith. He would be my grandmother Nea Karafotis' first cousin. She babysat for him while attending high school at the UW in Madison. Are you the same Rena? Did you know that the Leith Family still holds reunions each June in Wisconsin? If anyone is interested, I will put your name on the mailing list. The next reunion is Sunday, June 25, at Eldorado in Fond du Lac County. All are welcome, bring a dish to pass. I would like to have a larger mailing list for our 75th reunion which is coming up in a very few years. 3. Hello Jackie, My family of Gunns were from Orkney amd went to work for the Hudsons Bay Co. in Canada. One left Stromness on the "Prince of Wales" in 1806 and Adam Gunn left in 1835 from the same port and on the same ship, however he travelled to Fort Vancouver in Washington State. The library has a book on immigration from Scotland and one day I happened to read it and found a George Gunn had left the Orkneys in 1795 to work for HBC - a lot earlier than I had originally thought. Hope this is of some help, Sincerely, Elizabeth Jackie Middleton wrote: > > A lot of people from the Orkneys embarked from Glasgow. > > Do you know where/when they landed ? 3. I found my info on William Leith, son of J. D. Leith. After he left the Orkneys, he was a tailor in Canada at $8/month and then joined the Gold Rush in California. He made his stake, sailed to Panama, crossed the Isthmus on foot, sailed to the Orkneys where he married Margaret on March 17, 1853. They settled in Eldorado township near Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where he speculated in land and died on July 7, 1869. They had two children: William and Margaret Ann. William the son never married and died young. I'm descended from Margaret Ann Leith, my great grandmother, who married a second cousin also named William. Notice a naming pattern here? I have some more information. Who was your cousin descended from in the third generation if William the tailor is the first generation? Obviously, we're cousins. 3. G'day Kate, The province of Newfoundland and Labrador joined the Canadian Confederation in 1948, so the currency is the Canadian dollar. To send return postage, you need to go to your local Post Office and ask for some "International Reply Coupons". One coupon can be converted to provide the return postage for a standard size letter by surface mail, so the custom is to send two or three. (If you receive any IRCs, don't cash them, but save them until you need to send return postage yourself). I'm sure the Maritime Archives will have a web address by now, but the records probably haven't been scanned. They're one of the leading institutes dealing with maritime history, particularly for the North Atlantic. I used them about 10 years ago to track my German Great-Grandfather from Tyneside back to Hamburg over 5 years of voyages. The agreements have the Harbourmaster or British Consul's stamp for the various ports of call on the voyages. They are sorted by ship's name and year of voyage.
