Could someone please point me in the correct direction to find information about British Army presence in India circa 1877. Thanks. Bruce papabruce@home.com
My surname is Worke. My grandfather , Henry Lesslie Gladstone Worke was born in India circa 1877 where his father was a British officer. Henrys' family came from the Orkney Islands. He was educated in Victoria College in the Island of Jersy. He had a brother named Frank but no other known siblings. Henry emigrated to Canada about 1908 with his wife Margaret Lindsay Worke nee Turnbull. He died in Alberta, Canada, May 6th, 1939 at age 62. Henrys' grandmother was a first cousin to William Ewart Gladstone, a noted British Prime Minister. Any help with a connection ? Thanks. Bruce Worke papabruce@home.com

In the Major Battles of Scotland @ http://www.highlanderweb.co.uk/battles.htm is listed: 1745 Prestonpans - Prince Charles (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and his army of 2,400 defeat Cope and his army of 3,000. 1746 Falkirk - Jacobites defeat the English governments troops. 1746 Culloden - The Jacobites with 4,900 men are massacred by Cumberland with 10,000 men. Since my ancestor (gggg grandfather) Andrew CADDELL departed Scotland in abt 1746 coming to America, I can't help but wonder if the military/government climate was what prompted him to leave. According to family tradition, he stowed away on a ship at the age of 14 after having an argument with his father when he exclaimed that he would go to America where there is freedom. I know nothing about his life or whereabouts of his family in Scotland, except it is thought that he lived in the vicinity of Edinburgh at the time. Once he arrived in America, after serving endentured service for his passage, I have been able to generally following his migration through the Carolinas to Alabama where he died. Trying to find any trace of him or his family has been an impossible task for the past 15 years. However, in doing so, I have learned much about Scottish history and its people during the early years in Scotland. Most contacts I've made have usually said they have never heard of the name, but were in the 1500s - 1700s throughout Caithness, Inverness-shire, Nairnshire, Banffshire, Aberdeenshire, Perthshire, Lanarkshire, the Lothians and even Orkney and Shetland where the name was frequently found in early records. But were in the Nairn-Banff-shires as early as the 1050s. By the end of the Clearances most were gone from Scotland...to England, Ireland, Canada, Australia and America. I feel at a loss in not being able to check a census or other official record to find family, since mostly all I've been able to find is through the OPR, which todate has been inadequate. What other records exist that would be of benefit to me in my quest? My ponderings, Bill Caddell
The previous letter from Meg Greenwood to Mike Clouston was not meant for the list yet, it was generated in hitting Reply - I apologize !!! Nothing earth shaking included, but references to a living person in Orkney were not meant for public viewing - luckily I don't think she will ever know - Meg
Mike - THANKS - I really strained the grey matter over that one ! You might enjoy my first translation - Lamy Shak ! That enumerator used one of those ' t 's with no cross, just a kind of belated swoop up from the lower end of the t-stroke. And they used a ' k ' that was just like the t, but with a bit of a dash where the leg of the k should be. The 'ee ' was so near to an ' a ' that was almost closed at the top, I never considered ' e 's ! Suddenly, it just appeared as STREET ! The translation of ' Laing ' was not going to happen - NO DOT for the ' i ', and the ' m ' was perfect - I mean a really PERFECT ' m ' just like printed here. I appreciate your help on this one ! I will copy/paste and make corrections to a new posting for the Archives. - Meg Greenwood PS - I am still searching HALCRO / HALCROWs. There is one family member who has not shown up in America or Canada. A Margaret HALCROW is lost. How do locals respond to general mailings ? Is this a possibility for an acceptable method ? I have addresses for half a dozen HALCRO/Ws on the Mainland. If I keep it short, and to the point, would a 'Please help me find my Halcros" type letter be accepted by most, without insult ? Also - I have been very concerned about how to contact Mary GUNN. I think of her quite frequently, but have absolutely no idea of how to ask her to tell me (again) who she is related to. My Mother and I now think a phone call would be better than a letter, as we now find many of our elderly relatives do not write much, their hands are a bit shaky, and they are not confident to write. But the LOVE phone calls - I would like your opinion - she will not last forever, and I would like to know how she fits with our HALCROWs without invading her privacy.
Your guess of Long Street is not quite correct! Hi all, Can someone please tell me where "Hall" is. It is listed as a residence in the 1881 census as being in Orkney. Neighbours were Independence Manse and Whitehouse Breck. There seems to have been two large families listed individually as living at Hall. My ancestor was a farmer of 60 acres living at Hall(?) TIA Catherine
The Orkney genealogy pages for the GENUKI project have just moved to: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/OKI I'd appreciate it if those of you who have links on your own web pages would adjust them accordingly, not to mention personal bookmarks. Also, if anyone on this list is interested in taking over the maintenance of these pages, please let me know. I don't have the time to do a proper job of it. Bill Teschek teschek@alumni.unh.edu
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------E248035CB06739CA8542845B Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I've been printing some of the letters off over time and I figured that it was time I made some replies whether or not they are helpful. I have the following information. William Muir born on Sanday, June 18, 1843 married Jane Elphinstone Mary Peace, born about 1831 on Eday, married William Wallace in Orkney Jean Peace born 1800 married John Elphinstone in Stronsay, Orkney Mary Harcus born 1862, married Marcus Elphinstone on Eday, Orkney When my husband and I were in Orkney in 1990, he went lobster fishing with an Edwin Groat, a lobster fisherman who was born and raised on the Island and died there a couple of year ago. A man named Tulloch (his first name escapes me) lived and died in Wadena, Saskatchewan. He was from Orkney and was a sort of cousin of my husband's father. I hope this is helpful to someone. I am still trying to find connections to the Elphinstones on the Islands (not Kirkwall). Also the Swanneys from Sanday. Hi Joyce, I have a WILLIAM PEACE married ANN MOAR SPENCE in 1860. I looked up the IGI and found your MARY PEACE. It Looks like her birth date was 27 Nov 1830. I should have the name of William's parents soon but it looks to me like they could be brother and sister. There were seven in the family: JOHN b. 19 Jan 1823 MARGARET b. 8 Jan 1826 WILLIAM b. 11 Aug 1829 MARY b. 27 Nov 1830 JANE b. 10 Jul 1832 PETER b. 24 Mar 1837 ISABELLA b. 21 May 1839 My WILLIAM has a daughter named MARY PEACE. File this one away because I may be getting back to you. Catherine
Hi, Kate, It's Rena Leith again. During the holidays, which I spent at Leith Hall (Victorian B&B) in Cape May, NJ, my sister showed me a book called The Leiths of Harthill. I haven't finished it yet, but the author lives in Delaware and says he has lots of Leith genealogies that people sent to him after he published the book. Unfortunately, there was no contact info for him in the book, and I don't have it in front of me to tell you the author. It looks self-published. Does anyone on the list know about this book? Rena > > Can anyone tell me what the relationship is between the LEITH name in Orkney and Leith, Scotland, near Edinbrugh. What about Leith Hall? Is that family any relation to the Leiths who ended up in Orkney? My branch of the family traces back to Strommness, but I haven't gone back past the 1800s in my research. > Kate > yarbro@wctc.net >
