    1. [ORKNEY] St. Magnus Cathedral on TV
    2. Mike Clouston
    3. Hello everybody, Apologies if this has been duplicated via another ISP. This is especially for UK members of these lists. On Saturday evening (29th January) at 7.35 p.m., BBC2 TV will be showing a documentary about the history of St. Magnus Cathedral, introduced by Janet Street-Porter, in its History Zone series. According to the Radio Times:- "Cathedral Calls. Orkney. Janet Street Porter makes the long journey to Orkney to visit the rugged St. Magnus in Kirkwall, Britain's northernmost cathedral and also one of its smallest. porter immerses herself in the violent history of the islands, learning about the brutal murder of St. Magnus himself and the story of how his bones came to be discovered in the cathedral 800 years after his death." Videoplus+ code 766788 Kind regards Mike -- Mike Clouston mailto:mike@clouston.co.uk http://www.clouston.co.uk/ http://web.ukonline.co.uk/pegwell/

    1. [ORKNEY] The sinking of the Crown of London.
    2. A while back a person wrote to this list and said that he/she was a decendant of a person who had escaped from that ship, the Crown of London, which sank at Mull Head, parish of Deerness in 1679. He/she said that the ancestor (they gave his real name) escaped and changed his name to Dearness and settled on one of the other of the Orkney Islands. I would really appreciate it if that person would write to this list again or to me, personally, and tell me what the name of that ancestor was before he changed his name to Dearness. I cannot find that original letter Thank you.. Respectfully Mel Rich E-mail: MRich10000@aol.com

    3. Hi Peter:--I just cruise when doing my family research and download stuff to read at a later point and time and these did not fit so I always send to my lists in case it fits for someone else. I will keep your address and info in my db. Wishing you the best of luck............................Pat ---------- From: Peter Davis <prdavis@dingoblue.net.au> To: ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ORKNEY] another stray, not my own>SHEARER>1851 Census Date: Wednesday, January 26, 2000 12:58 AM Pat these are fantastic, thank you. Many of are from my family but the census gives some detail that I didn't have. The Margaret aged 82 on one of the other postings would be the mother of the Thomas below. Her daughter Mary married Thomas Scott in 1827 on Eday and they emigrated to Australia in 1849 with their nine children. 3. Scottish Parish Registers tend to record the marriage contracts rather than the actual marriages. For this reason, 'marriages' are often recorded in two parishes, as the registers reflect the fact that bride and groom were from two different parishes. In this regard they are more like the Church of England Banns, which had to read in both parties parishes. cheers David Perth, Western Australia researching Stewart, Stout, Baikie, Heddle, Malcomson, Gray in Walls ----- Original Message ----- From: <Zrealmuto@aol.com> To: <ORKNEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2000 10:03 AM Subject: [ORKNEY] Spence/Sinclair > Hi All, > > Looking for any info on : > ROBERT SPENCE and WILLIAMINA SINCLAIR mar. > > OCT 23rd 1832 in EDAY and PHARAY > and > OCT 24rth in KIRKWALL and ST.
