    3. Not that I'm a frequent contributor, but I'm happy the Rootsweb lists are up again. I too enjoy F-G, but also several other lists including this one. I use Facebook for communication with personal friends, like the Rootsweb lists for genealogy. Shark or not, that sea snake must have been quite a sight ! The Orkney list has gone quite, but several of the other Lists to which I subscribe, particularly Cumbria and Fermanagh Gold are very vibrant. On the other hand, being a private person, I wouldn’t touch facebook with a barge pole. Regards David Armstrong Maylands Western Australia

    3. Thank you everyone (and thanks, Denice, for adding the site's email to this List). Just had wanted to send the site's updated email addy. I've been having a ton of trouble with my current ISP, to the point that they have bounced emails meant for me at my web site back to Senders, telling people that my email is "Inactive". They did this because of a new policy they have that I must sign into *their version of WEB EMAIL* every now and again instead of simply using my own desktop email software. (Really silly policy, by the way. Silly enough that I changed web domain registrars and servers as a result. I don't like missing email for the site!) - Lisa

    3. Pamela, There was a Margaret Taylor Simison who was born not in South Ronaldsay but in Balfour Village, Shapinsay on 1 June 1878. Extract from the 1881 census: 1881, Shapinsay, District: 1, Property No: 28 - Balfour Village 1. James Simison, (M), 31, Head, Mar, Ag Lab, S Ronaldsay 2. Jane Simison, (F), 30, Wife, Mar, , S Ronaldsay 3. James Simison, (M), 10, Son, , Scholar, S Ronaldsay 4. Jane Simison, (F), 9, Dau, , Scholar, S Ronaldsay 5. David Simison, (M), 0, Son, , (11 months), Shapinsay You'll see that most of the family were born in South Ronaldsay but the two youngest were born in Shapinsay. Norman Tulloch

    3. Pamela, I had a look at the Scotland's People website but I couldn't find a Margaret Taylor Simison born in South Ronaldsay. The closest match was a Margaret Simison born at Barswick in South Ronaldsay on 2 September 1878. There's also a Margaret Niven Simison who was born in South Ronaldsay and Burray in 1926, but again that doesn't seem to be the right person. Extract from the census of 1881: 1881, S Ronaldsay, District: 10, Property No: 1 - Barswick 1. George Simison, (M), 40, Head, Mar, Farmer, S Ronaldsay 2. Jane Simison, (F), 31, Wife, Mar, , S Ronaldsay 3. Hellen Simison, (F), 8, Dau, , Scholar, S Ronaldsay 4. William Simison, (M), 6, Son, , Scholar, S Ronaldsay 5. George Simison, (M), 4, Son, , Scholar, S Ronaldsay 6. Margaret Simison, (F), 2, Dau, , , S Ronaldsay 7. Thomas Simison, (M), 0, Son, , (9 months), S Ronaldsay 8. Jessie Gray, (F), 18, Servant, S, General Servant, S Ronaldsay However, it may well be that isn't the family you're looking for. Do you know when your grandmother was born? 2. David Armstrong via
    3. G’day everyone I apologise for disturbing the slumbers of the Orkney List, however, I came across Thomas Smith Leask (1839-1912) of Stenness in a book called “Pioneers of Rhodesia” by Edward Tabler (Cape Town 1966). The book, which is in the format of a biographical dictionary, has a decent size article of Thomas Leask and his activities in Africa, in what became Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Unfortunately the article was too long for me to copy in the time I had available. The book is on microfilm in the LDS catalogue.
