    1. [ORKNEY] LDS digitized films to view at home or at FHC

    3. G’day Meg You just need to use the microfilm catalogue in exactly the same way as you did in the past when you wanted to order a microfilm If the film has NOT been digitised, then you’ll still see the “microfilm reel” symbol opposite the microfilm number, as in these Orcadian Court records. < https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/222372?availability=Family%20History%20Library > On the other hand, if they’ve been digitised but need to be viewed in an LDS library, they’ll have a “camera” symbol surmounted by a “key” symbol opposite the film no, e.g. the Stromness OPR. < https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/222372?availability=Family%20History%20Library > or the Civil Registration registers and indexes < https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/79310?availability=Family%20History%20Library > And if they’ve been digitised without viewing restrictions, i.e. you can view them at home, the “camera” will not have the “key” key above it, such as these probate records from Wentworth County, Ontario. < https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/128086?availability=Family%20History%20Library > It should be remembered that the Orkney OPR were extracted long ago and included in the IGI. However, the old IGI index is NOT linked to the newly digitised microfilm. Therefore in circumstances like this, I find it useful to operate with two windows open – the IGI search page in one, and the digitised film in the other. A “Magnifying Glass” symbol opposite the film number indicates that the film has been indexed previously for the IGI component of Family Search. In regard to the Irish Civil Registration records, you should use this free site which has the digitised records available (and more than are on Family Search). < https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp > Happy Hunting David Armstrong Maylands Western Australia From: mailto:[email protected] Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2018 9:28 AM To: David Armstrong Subject: LDS digitized films to view at home or at FHC David - our FHC cannot tell me [yet] WHAT topics have been digitized. 3. Meg, good to see your name again!! We discussed (unsuccessfully) our possible HALCRO connections a few years back, but never hit on this Fair Isle possibility. I can not find any matches to the specific persons you list below, but do have family about that period on Fair Isle, named Omond. They also show up around Kirkwall. Have you run into them? There were also connections from them with LESLIE families but almost every LESLIE I have were on Shetland. Have you run into that connection? 3. Stronsay connections Great to see this group in action again! My great-grandmother Margaret Williamson was born October 12, 1840 in Whitehall, Stronsay. Her parents were George Williamson (born July 22, 1814 in Fair Isle, Shetland died Dec 22, 1858 Whitehall, Stronsay) and Margaret Irvine (b. Nov 5, 1818 in Fair Isle, Shetland and died aft 1881 perhaps Stronsay). They were married Nov 14, 1839 in Stronsay. I've discovered my family in Fair Isle going back to 1720 and probably even more... Great Grandmother migrates from Stronsay sometime in the 1860's to the Glasgow area and marries my great grandfather from Enniskillen, Fermanagh on Jan 1, 1869. He dies 10 years later in Govanhill (at the time considered the poorest area of Glasgow) and leaves her with 5 children one of whom was my grandfather. This 4'10'' dynamo of a woman was able to get her kids and herself to Canada and eventually they all end up in the States. Would love to find any connections to Stronsay. Of course family names are WILLIAMSON, IRVINE, LESLIE.... George Williamson and Margaret Irvine had at least 10 children while in Stronsay with perhaps over half surviving to adulthood. Love to connect with anyone else searching for these same ancestors. Here is a photo of my gr-grandmother Margaret Williamson with two of her sons circa 1920. 3. This information was confirmed via DNA donated by my youngest half-sister [herein after referred to as one of my sisters or brothers] three days prior to my 65th birthday. Which made for a huge landmark birthday for me. “Our father” is no longer in pain after departing this plane of existence on January 02, 2018. His wife followed him February 02, 2018 leaving 5 of my siblings to mourn them, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The latest was born Feb 23, 2018 to their eldest grand-daughter and her husband. In March I had the extreme joy of holding that newest addition to the extended family in my own arms. “My three parents” - the two males resided in the same town through their adult lives. Mother has outlived four “partners” she admits to. ;)

    2. Dennice
    3. Revealed I am of the temperament of a Scot and, genetically, have a total of known 5 half-sisters and 2 half-brothers. I have “three parents” one of whom told me he had no reason to think otherwise is on my certificate of birth as my father. My mother is a proven via DNA and records including images were one to take three generations at about 5-years-of-age or less to B&W there’s no way to discern whether myself, my mother or my daughter. DNA results have proven without a doubt that had I been given my biological father’s surname at birth my name would be Dennice Hill (originating, positively in Scotland - as yet unsure as to where). My “paper-trail” father chose to withhold that information from me even onto death. Although, once I had permission to publicly speak from my paper-trail-sister as to the quandary her and my results showed as well as over 2 years of attempting to figure out which one of us was or wasn’t........ Asking the right questions in the right places opened the door to a floodgate of information I’ve not yet been able to process completely. Finding my father was oh so bittersweet in that he was in the last stages of Alzheimer’s. His eldest legal daughter had power of attorney and would not allow me to lay eyes on him. I was given enough information to know to have my adult sons have a PAS done as bio-father had ignored signs of prostate cancer too long. I’ll not go into details of what that entailed. For health reasons would be one of the best reasons to do DNA even if the paper trail seems carved in stone. OH.. seems I resemble BOTH my parents and while images do not bear resemblances with my siblings, apparently, when I am speaking or making gestures during same I resemble a half-sister in a rather uncanny way. [I was struck dumb on video conferencing with her one afternoon —- like seeing myself 20 years ago, as a blond].
