    3. I had not sent you a message earlier, Ken, but I read your list of names you are researching. I am also interested in the FOTHERINGHAM line in Orkney. I am trying to add more information to Thomas FOTHERINGHAM (1746-1821) who married Janet TOWRIE (1751-1827). Their daughter, Janet FOTHERINGHAM (1774-????) married Robert MUIR (1781-1855). Robert and Janet had a son, young Robert MUIR (1816-????). Young Robert married Mary SKEA in 1841 in Sanday. Their daughter, Georgina MUIR is my great grandmother. If you are interested in any of these people, I would be happy to share what little I have on the Orkney line. Barbara Laver

    3. On the Norquay page Samuel Norquay m Margaret Renton circa 1876. I can find no trace of a marriage in GROS or IGI. Also, I cannot find a birth for Margaret Renton in the Orkney OPR. Is anyone able to shed some light on this? Joy - from the land down under

    3. The Reputed Father of Margaret RENTON in the Kirkwall 1876 Marriage was JOHN RENTON, not James RENTON. I'd taken the tall letter h in John as a long, printer's style S as in the abbreviation Jas. Not so. Its clearly John RENTON

    1. Norquay / Renton marriage in 1876
    2. Greenwood
    3. Joy - One reason you didn't find anything in the IGI is that the local legal records weren't used past 1875. If there are other entries, they are Patron Submissions more recently added and not directly from primary sources [Civil Registration books]. The basic IGI covers 1855 through 1875 events in Scotland entered from Registration books, which means occasionally handwriting is illegible or the quality of the books is less than desired [seriously faded ink]. Another reason is he is listed in the INDEXes of the General Register Office as Samuel NURQUOY. Scotlandpeople will only search for the exact surname you give them - you can use Wild Cards [*], but there are specific rules. Now to the other problems, Margaret RENTON may have been listed under her mother's surname.....the Marriage Registration shows James RENTON as the 'Reputed Father' so I'd look for Margaret ALLAN born about 1853-4. Here is the data from the marriage document in 1876 : Kirkwall Marriages, 1876- June 1, Wellington St, Kirkwall, Established Church of Scotland ceremony. Samuel NURQUOY, Mason's apprentice, Bachelor, 23y residing Burray. Son of Edward NURQUOY, Farmer and Mary NURQUOY ms ANDERSON. Margaret RENTON, Spinster, 22y residing Wellington St, Kirkwall. Daughter of James RENTON, Printer's apprentice [reputed father] and Janet ALLAN. Signed William SPARK, Minister of Kirkwall & St Ola. Witnesses were William SHAW and Elizabeth BROCH. Registered June 2 at Kirkwall. There were only 2 other Marriages in any Orkney parish [from 1855 to 1929] involving a RENTON lass. In 1880, Jane W. RENTON married David Balfour McKENZIE in Stromness, entry #11. In 1871, Ann RENTON married John ALLAN in Kirkwall & St Ola, entry #7. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA who has way too much printed-out from ScotlandsPeople in a huge file drawer, plus more films that you can shake a stick at. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To: [email protected] Subject: [Orkney] Margaret Renton From: "Joy Moloney" <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2005 18:55:11 -0700 On the Norquay page Samuel Norquay m Margaret Renton circa 1876. I do not aim to do this (essentially 'take' photos from other people's sites), it is not my policy-- what I would hope to do is interact more directly and specifically with each Contributor and work out ownership, copyright and permission issues regarding each photo contributed... you may have a grouping of family photos on your own site, that are a conglomeration from many family members over the years of your research? Or all of your CROMARTY and etc pictures under your particular "ownership", at your home? Family privacy and agreement is important to me, and I would want to work out copyright permission details prior to my using your photographs. The reason I bring this up is that I originally had the intent of trying to post photos on SouthRonaldsay.net that are probably not posted anywhere else on the web... I wanted to provide a sort of venue for people to be able to post their family-related photos for South Ronaldsay/ Burray/ Swona/ Pentland Skerries, instead of, or until, they had their own web site space for same. There are two (maybe more?) things I could do, instead of "taking", or basically repeating, photos from Alex Cromarty's site (or anyone else's site) to my own website... --> One could be that right on my "Contributed Photographs" web page, I also post a list of links to web sites devoted to South Ronaldsay and Burray photos that already exist on-line, independent of my own site... that way people could skill access more photos; --> Another could be that I work out specifically with the other web site owner which particular photos [and, important to me, their copyright attributions and family permissions] that I could also post on SouthRonaldsay.net... and along with these certain photos we have agreed upon, I place a link above each of the photo(s) to your own photo web site... Any input or preferences welcome.... I know there are several researchers and several professional photographers who already either want to put their photos on-line on their own sites (you probably know who you are, too!), or already have their own sites with South Ronaldsay photos... it would be nice for SouthRonaldsay.net to be a sort of nexus for all of this, whether it be by photos of yours that you let me post myself, in my way, on my site -- or whether you let me link from my site to your site of photos on the "Contributed Photographs" page... - Lisa
