    2. George Gray
    3. Ken, Yes, Warsetter will not be very far from Boloquoy, Sanday. They both show up on the website http://www.old-maps.co.uk/. If you type in Boloquoy, Sanday and then select the address rather than place name it will show you Boloquoy. Then go to the right and down and you will see Warsetter. For some reason it does not work when you put in Warsetter, Sanday but it is there. When you enter Warsetter, Sanday it gives Warsetter, Sanday, Egilsay as a possible match. The place in Egilsay is actually Warsett. They are 1882 maps. The weather here is not very exciting this summer but it certainly does not stop the visitors. It does not stop us having beautiful sunsets either. Last night the sun was a ball of fire as it set behind the Rendall hills over Kirkwall Bay. It was much the same as the sun came up over Stronsay about 4.00 am this morning. ( I was up taking our young pup out to the garden .) It is never dark at this time of year. The sun is not down very long but in between sunset and sunrise the sky is all colours. Doesn't it make you wish you were here ? Every day is very busy in the Orkney Family History Society Office. I have plenty of time to help visitors with their research now that I am retired. Hope the "old maps" help you with your query. 3. Jan, that would be wonderful. There is another matter, which is a bit more drastic! We have an illegitimate birth, James Velzian born Aug 31, 1856 Mother Elizabeth VELZIAN Place Kirkwall Father not given on birth details, but later on his marriage certificate he gives his father as John Linklater, & by 1871 (census), he, James, changes his name to Linklater. Do you think the Kirk Sessions could help us to find "which" John, as there a a few possibilities. 3. addition sinclair information: "templar sinclairs: From 1307, when the Templars in France were being chased out of the country by a major persecution, many took shelter in Scotland under the wings of the Roslin Sinclairs...and the Scottish king, Robert I de Bruce, welcomed the knights with open arms. The first Grand Master of Masonry in Scotland was (another) William Sinclair of Roslin Castle. His descendant, another William Sinclair yet, laid (in 1446) the foundations of the esoteric cathedral, Rosslyn Chapel (on the same hill as Roslin Castle). This cathedral, every square inch of which is laced with carvings, was built in French style, suggesting that it was indeed built by the French Templars who had escaped to Scotland. reference cited: http://www.tribwatch.com/roslin.htm bill p.s. thnx for all you do at OFS, George ----- Original Message ----- From: George Gray <[email protected]> Date: Friday, July 1, 2005 0:54 am Subject: Re: [Orkney] Warsetter > Ken, > > On looking through the Orkney Census the only Warstter appears to > be in > Sanday. > > When Lord Henry Sinclair was killed at the Battle of Flodden his > brother > Sir William Sinclair of Warsetter took over his duties in Orkney. > as Henry's son, William, was only a child. > > If you take a look at this website Sigurd Towrie expains their > involvement > in the Battle of Summerdale: > > http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/summerdale.htm > > George Gray, Orkney > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, July 01, 2005 6:38 AM > Subject: [Orkney] Warsetter > > > >I have often run across the name of this estate in accounts about > Orkney, > >but > > can't find any of those references just now. > > > > Can any Lister tell me where it is located? > > > > Ken Harrison > > North Vancouver, Canada > > > > Unless specifically stated otherwise in this message, there is > no > > intentional > > attachment on this e-mail transmission. > > > > > > ==== ORKNEY Mailing List ==== > >>>>>TIP: When when posting your research interests, include the > surnames > >>>>>in your subject line - this will improve our list archive and > assist > >>>>>future researchers.<<<< > > > > ============================== > > Census images 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871, plus so much more. > > Ancestry.com's United Kingdom & Ireland Collection. 3. Jan, Yes,documents relating to the Walls and Flotta Kirk Session for the period 1837 to 1984 are in the Orkney Archives. The reference number is CH2/1105. As Ken Harrison recently suggested, James Irvine's reference book "Trace Your Orkney Ancestors" is an excellent resource for information on these alternative sources of genealogical information. 1. Isbisters from Stephen Davie
    2. Greenwood
    3. Have enjoyed the musings of our itinerant Stephen Davie as he trolls the islands for rellies and repast. Only recently did we discover we are related through his DAVIE line. My maternal GGrandmother, Isabella WILSON married Wm HALCROW in Stromness, 1879. Her mother, Margaret ISBISTER had married James WILSON in 1840, Firth & Stennes. Margaret's mother was Cecilia DAVIE. Cecilia's brother's descendants lead to Stephen DAVIE having made the long swim over to Canada. As I was savouring the sights and delights Stephen relayed on June 27, I remember his exact words ....... "Got lots of news on my Isbister line." Almost choked on a fudge pop ! Well, you see its gotten really hot here and I thought it was a safe treat in that it wouldn't spill on the keyboard. Never thought I'd almost buy the farm [become deceased] from eating a popsicle ! Survived quite heartily, and now must let Stephen return home, have a bit of time to collect his wits, and then I'll begin with the 20 questions. MegG
