At the front of a bible which belonged to Jemima Borwick is an inscription regarding her grandmother's family. This appears to relate to Jemima's paternal grandmother Jean Corrigill b 17 Mar 1811 Harray d/o John & Catherine [Isbister] who married William Borwick in 1829. The writer is 82 at the time of writing the passage and states that her father was a teacher at Harray and his father was a Hudson Bay man. This is followed by: Granny died 1893 March [relating to above writer] Thus, if I have the correct info then John Corrigill would be a teacher & his father a HBC man. However, I could not find Jean Corrigill-Borwick on the 1881 census which would indicate that she died before then and could not possibly attain the age of 82. [Her other grandmother Elizabeth Swanson died at age 79 and she was the daughter of a HBC man & so was eliminated] I would like to hear from anyone searching this family. Susanne

Hello Listmembers, I'm searching for information about my ggg-grandparents: Andrew Finnie - born on March 18, 1820 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He died on june 19, 1908 in South Monaghan, Ontario, Canada. Jane Chambers - born on August 12, 1829 in Innertown, Stromness Parish, Orkney, Scotland. She died on Jan. 29, 1873 in South Monaghan, Ontario, Canada. Andrew's parents were: Andrew Finnie - born 1779 in Ayrshire. Jean Nairn - born in Aryshire, year unknown. They married on Feb. 2, 1808 in Stewarton, Ayrshire. I would appreciate any advice concerning further research in Orkney. Thank you,Wendy McCullough http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/c/c/Wendy-B-Mccullough

Hugh Marwick's Orkney Farm-Names (1952) has under Hoy: "Warbuster: Werbuster beneth the hill (a 9d land) 1500; Warbister 1627 [Peterkin iii, 38]; Warbuster by South the Burne (9d land), and W- by North the Burne (9d land) 1739. The dual Warbuster of 1739 had replaced the former Beneath the Hill; the burn referred to was evidently that running down from Orgill. The name is now obsolete. O[ld] N[orse] "varo-bolstaor", 'beacon-bister'; the varo- in this case must have had reference to the Ward Hill of Hoy which towers up precipitously immediately behind the tunship." The name appears on Blaeu's 1654 map (www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/blaeu) and the 1872 OS map (www.old-map.co.uk). The latter implies Warbuster by South is now the Hoy Outdoor Centre shown on the current 1:25000 map. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2005 12:47 AM Subject: Warbister > Several members were very quick last week to locate "Warsetter" for me on > Sanday, and now I see I have another reference to "Warbister" which > appears from > the context of the document to have been on Hoy. > > I don't have LandRanger 7 which covers Hoy, and can not find this > Warbister > on the bits of Hoy which show on the other maps. > > Can someone help me with this, please? Some people have asked me where to get to the Sutherland mailing list and the active one that is working is http://www.highlandhearts.com/ click on enter and then at the top click on mailing lists Just follow the instructions and post your interest there are a lot of knowledgable people on this list re Sutherlandshire As most of the ones that emailed me my people came from there to the Orkney Islands, sorry I didnt reply right away as I was off on holiday Cathy
Several members were very quick last week to locate "Warsetter" for me on Sanday, and now I see I have another reference to "Warbister" which appears from the context of the document to have been on Hoy. I don't have LandRanger 7 which covers Hoy, and can not find this Warbister on the bits of Hoy which show on the other maps. Can someone help me with this, please? Where was/is Warbister? There are a lot of things which make me wish I were there again - maybe soon..... How is membership going at the Orkney Family History Society? What activities is OFHS planning for the Summer? Are all the churchyards transcribed and indexed now? Say "hello" to Elaine for me .... Elsie Ritchie is accumulating huge amounts of data on your Traills. I'll have to send some of this to you sometime .... Now that you're retired, I'll have to send you my research "wish list" .... ;-)) Ken Harrison North Vancouver, Canada Unless specifically stated otherwise in this message, there is no intentional attachment on this e-mail transmission.
Recent Posts for MUIRs were from information avilable on LDS church Index films. Was doing research for someone who wanted a particular parish and stumbled across the Orkney ones. Hated to just let them go by when information is so hard to come by without expending a lot of cash. Well, I seem to have abandoned my basic math skills, as the information I posted could easily be about living persons. No complaints yet, so I'll offer my aplogies before someone tosses a brick my way. Longevity will be considered before I Post other Indexes. MegG
