I think Mike means just http://www.orkneytoday.ltd.uk , without /index asp. Listers may also not be aware of http://www.orkneytoday.ltd.uk > "Visitors Downloads" > "Orcadian Genealogy". On this page I have attempted to meet Orkney Today's request to provide concise advice to those intending to visit Orkney to seek their roots. This page may be of use to Listers who are planning such visits, or who have friends who are. Listers' suggestions for improving the site will be appreciated. Isabella (Fea) Miller is one of the name I watch for - my ancestor 1 Isabella Fea Miller b: 09 Apr 1807 Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland d: 04 Jan 1891 .. +John Tomison b: 06 Mar 1796 South Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland m: 15 Apr 1823 in South Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland d: 02 Mar 1882 I am aware of at least two others: * There was also a John Thomson married an Isabel Millar on 23 Jan 1806 in Westray & Papa Westray * From the will of Captain James Sutherland, then of Bu of Burray (will proved 15 Feb 1827 in London, reported by Barbara Stirling ([email protected])): "Isabella Miller at that date his housekeeper at the Bu of Burray, £100." This IM is on the 1821 census for South Ronaldsay (entry #8/31) as being 40 - and there is an entry that matches my ancestor on the Pentland Skerries.. So this isn't her either. I hope this is of assistance Mike -----Original Message----- From: Blake [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 19 July 2005 19:37 To: [email protected] Subject: [Orkney] Laughton I would like to be in touch with descendants of John Laughton (1784-1857) born in South Ronaldsay and Isabella Kennedy (17841857) dau Elizabeth married Moses Spenccer, and son John Laughton who married Isabella Miller Blake Allan, Victoria BC ==== ORKNEY Mailing List ==== >>>> Orkney list now has 329 subscribers <<<<< ============================== Census images 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871, plus so much more. However, it may be worth trying the email addresses I gave you; it won't cost anything. I don't even know what a threadworks is. Does it produce thread, or go in for some sort of weaving? While there have undoubtedly been knitting and some tweed production in Orkney, I don't think it was ever a great centre for the textile industry, whereas Glasgow and other places in the west of Scotland were important in that respect. Remember the Paisley patterns, for example? Firms like Coates were also very important in thread production. Regards, Norman Tulloch

I assume it was in Orkney, though? If it was, it might be worth sending an email to this man who is in charge of the museum service in Orkney. [email protected] Source here: http://www.orkney.gov.uk/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=446 Just possibly there might be something made by the Viking Threadworks in one of the Orkney museums, or they might have some sort of record of the business. Another contact you might want to try is the Orkney Library & Archive. Hi Norman, Those are good suggestions. I'll give that a try. What I'm going on are notes my Mom had that said George Melville and his sons George and Edward owned the Viking Threadworks. As far as I know, they were all born in Orkney, but the father was buried in Glasgow. So I'm not sure where the factory was located. I'll send off a note to those two places you suggested. Hi susanne, I don't think that's my George. The date is about right but the info that I have states there were three kids, George, Edward, and Unknown. If some knows about the Viking Threadworks, that will help pin point my George. Thanks for the effort, Albert
Hi List, Has anyone heard of The Viking Threadworks or my gg uncle, George Melville, born abt 1840? He and his sons George and Edward were supposed to have owned the Threadworks. Thanks for any help, Albert in Harper, Texas
