Am sitting at the 'Flotta' computer in the Kirkwall Library right now. Have been here only 3 days, its Stromness Shopping week, we missed a few sunny days, is a bit wet and dampish, but not slowing anyone down. Staying in Finstown at the moment, will be in Kirkwall and hiding in the Archive room upstairs Monday to Wednesday. Hope to check out a few of the very early Orcadian newspapers for any mention of Joseph HALCRO's return from America in December of 1853. Slight chance at best, but worth a look. Am absorbing as much as I can this trip, we never know if the next journey will actually happen no matter how well its planned. MegG in OK [currently MegG in ORK]
Ken, Here's another link to information about Alexander McKenzie — a piece produced by the Stornoway Historical Society that gives more precise information about his place of birth than the previous article I linked to. http://www.stornowayhistoricalsociety.org.uk/features/amackenzie/ Norman Tulloch
Ken, According to a couple of sources I've found, Alexander McKenzie was born in Stornoway on the island of Lewis in the Hebrides. Here's one link, but I'm sure a bit of a Google would turn up more. http://www3.telus.net/st_simons/cr9904.htm Norman Tulloch

I apologize to those who will see this on several Lists. Today marks the 212th anniversay of the placing of grafitti on a rock on the coast of British Columbia to mark the first crossing of the North American continent by a European, completed this date on 22 July 1793 by Alexander McKenzie.
