Hi Cathy -- In regards to your query on the Oman Budge stuff, I do have some interest in being a "fellow" seeker with you on this! and would hope that anyone who might know more about Oman's possible parents/siblings, could contact me as well? Please? I know you and I, Cathy, have interacted in past years about Budge-related info, but I cannot recall just now what all we have focused upon together. My gggg-granddad was James Budge (who married Janet Duncan in 1784, a South Parish marriage), and I have been long seeking definitive proof of James' parentage. Because the Old Parish Registers have some missing years in the 1700s, and because I have discovered many incidences of folk not even being notated as having been baptized/born in these earlier registers, I cannot be sure that the one feasible "James Budge" who is notated in the OPR [baptism of 1759, 'natural' son of a Magnus Budge] can be positively ID'd as *my* 4G-grandfather. *For several reasons*, I am suspecting that my gggg-grandfather, James Budge, could very well have had a father named John Budge... and I also suspect that he may have been either a very close relative, or actually a brother, of the (1) Barbara Budge who married James Rossie, and (2) the Elizabeth Budge who married Donald Thomson. At any rate, I do sense that the Henry Budge in the 1821 Census Household living with Oman Budge was very likely (one of?) Oman's brother(s). In this 1821 Census, they are at the Millhouse which, from earlier records, I understand may have also been known as the Mill at Windwick. This Windwick angle could be a clue for us -- though we may not know it yet, or may not yet have 24/7 access to the Orkney Archives to find out - alas. I do have some of the Ledger Rentals for 'South Ronaldshay", for crops (& their taxes)... Henry Budge in "Gossigair" [Gossigar is tied to the abovementioned BUDGE women, too, and --in some records-- my own James Budge] also paid some taxes for "his half of the Mill of Windwick". There was a John Budge in Windwick notated in the Crop Ledgers circa Oct.1799, and a Robert "Annell", also in Windwick, paid his taxes that same time (October 1799). I bring up Robert Annal, because I see that a Robert Annal was a Witness for the marriage of Oman Budge to Margaret Tomison in 1805. Circa 1796/1797 or so, Maurice "Cursatter", Donald "Thompson" and my James Budge, all variously paid portions of the taxes for land at Thurrigair. My sense is that this Donald "Thompson" was the one married to Elizabeth/Elspet Budge... who, as I mentioned, *might* (warning! the sibling aspect still only theory!) might be a sister of my James Budge. It's all a mish mash mess, these Budges found living in the middle and southern part of So. Ron. at the turn of that century... more research is needed -- and this means (for me) hopefully some day returning to Kirkwall and visiting their new Library. But, Cathy (and anyone else faced with this brick wall in particular), we will have to keep digging around for info and clues! Thank you for receiving benefits from my site :-) I normally purchase the Register information and pay for the site each year on my own penny, so it is always nice to hear some kind words every now and then, to make my efforts more worthwhile - many thanks! Lisa << I am trying to determine who the parents are of my ggg grandfather Oman Budge who married Margaret Tomison 19th Aug. 1805 in SouthRonaldsay. Thanks Maryann - with about 90,000 sq. miles wiped out, they say the devastation is bigger than the size of Great Britain... I've never "Googled" what the size of Great Britain is, so someone tell me if that analogy is right -- hard to imagine... Hi Everyone - Thanks, Fiona, and all, for visiting my site -- I saw my name & site mentioned in the last few days on the List but have not had the focus or interest to add a post or a reply this week as, coincidentally, I've been trying to make sure some of my cousins, also descendants of South Ronaldsay BUDGEs, are safe! They live near New Orleans, and this past week has been very worrisome as I have tried to reach them and find out if they had evacuated/were safe. Till this morning at 3 am, I still had not heard from them -- but now I know, with much relief, that they are safe & in a hotel in Houston. Jenni's father, Jim, & his wife, have this past month been travelling in Scotland and South Ronaldsay/Orkney, but he was travelling without his computer & email, so I have been unable to check with him to verify the whereabouts/safety of his daughter, son-in-law and 13 yr old grandson. He won't return till Sep 7. Perhaps many of you met Jim & Claudia while they were on South Ronaldsay or in Orkney! Hi Fiona, Yes, I have been on Lisa Conrads wonderful site, it has been a great help in my Southronaldsay research. The 1821 census as you have pointed out has Henry Budge and Margaret Budge in Oman's house hold and I like you would say they were probably his siblings, it is just how do I prove it, I also have a Margaret Budge who married Donald Symison 30th June 1830 I think this is the same Margaret that was listed living at Oman's in the 1821 census, on her death certificate her parents are listed as John Budge and Jannet Norquoy, once again if I could find a way to prove she was Oman's sister I have his parents. It's a fantastic resource - with images from the 1821 census, transcripts of death records and lots of additional notes made by Lisa into many of the South Ronaldsay families. Well worth a visit! Oman Budge was aged 44 in the 1821 census. As well as his wife and children, there was a Henry Budge ages 46 and a Margaret Budge aged 29 living in the household - this is presumably Oman's siblings. Hello Everyone, I am trying to determine who the parents are of my ggg grandfather Oman Budge who married Margaret Tomison 19th Aug. 1805 in SouthRonaldsay. Oman Budge was a witness at the Marriage of an Isabel Budge to Thomas Swan 18th Dec. 1817 St Margarets Hope, her parents were John Budge and Jannet Norquoy, I am clutching at straws now, but could this Isabel Budge be a sister to my Oman Budge, it wasn't unusual to have ones siblings as witnesses at these occasions? Any one else researching this family? I could surely do with a little help on this one. Thanks in advance Cathy
Cathy, I don't know about your Oman Budge, but I know a lady in Kirkwall, who will know if anyone does. She doesn't have a computer but I have her address and telephone number. She and her husband Jimmy are very nice people and she has been keeping family records a great many years. She is a Thomson and connected to the Budge family. Facing page 48 of David Webter's book of 1910, "The History of the United Presbyterian Congregation, Kirkwall" is a small (8cm x 9cm) photo of Patterson which I could scan for you, but I suggest you would get a better quality picture from the Orkney Photographic archive ( [email protected] ) ----- Original Message ----- From: "P. Hello list, I'm hoping to find a photograph of Rev. Robert Paterson D.D. (1795-1870) of Kirkwall and thought that hopefully someone on the Orkney list may be able to help me. The names I am also researching are: James Sinclair (b.1804 Stronsay), Peter S.Heddle (b.1825 Kirkwall & St. Ola), Richard & Isabella Taylor (married 1819 Stronsay) and William Sclater Flett (b.1802 Kirkwall) thank you, Pam Botha Victoria, Aust.
Hi folks I have just joined the list in the hope that someone with local knowledge can help me. I have found that an ancestor of mine (from Aberdeenshire) was declared a fugitive in 1858. When he was tried in Edinburgh in 1860, his address was given as Merdies, Evie, Ornkey. Since he was more than likely travelling with a wife and young daughter, and on the return route his wife would have been pregnant, I am thinking that he may have gone to stay with relatives or friends in Evie. With this thought in mind I hired the 1861 census for Evie hoping to find Merdies and to see who was living there. Today I was disappointed since I could find no town, or farm, by that name. Is there anyone on the list who recognises this town or placename or could suggest anywhere I would look to find its location. Thank you in advance Sharon (in Australia)
