Am new to this so don't even know what OHFS is! We are looking for William Brass information in Sandwick--mid 1800's. Sons named William and Edward went to Pittsburgh. A sister, Mary Brass, lived on the old farm. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Can anyone tell me where/when details of what my logon password is were supplied with the newsletter (I am a member)? Or do I have to apply to the society. Mike

My sincere thanks to Lisa Conrad, Jim Lawson, Ken Harrison and Marion Mcleod for helping me find some details on my great-great-grandmother, Isabella BUDGE. I've updated my ancestral tree - the first five generations of it at any rate - and put it on my website. Have a look at http://www.mikeclouston.co.uk/ and click on the 'My Ancestral Tree' link at the top of the page. Marion, I'll be in touch off-line regarding Wards, but don't hold your breath! -- Kind regards Mike Clouston
Hello Liz, There are several of us who have been working together on the Gray families of Westray, Papa Westray (my lot), and Eday, and I know that at least one of the group has a particular interest in the Foulis family as well. Please contact me off list and let me know which Grays you are interested in, and perhaps we can help one another. There are lots of other Baikies there, and this James may show up as a child in some family. Would they be on there if they followed the herring? Or are you talking military? Those who "followed the herring" are fishermen, ie their primary occupation was catching fish. The boat on which they sailed was just a tool for their trade. On the other hand, the primary occupation of sailors was to sail a vessel from one port to another and deliver its cargo. They are part of the Merchant Navy". Also, strictly speaking, the "Military" refers to the Army only, not the Navy, although nowadays the word has been debased to cover all three of the Armed Services. Liz I am researching names in Westray, the main ones being DAVIDSON, EUNSON, HUTCHISON and CORSE but in that research I have also come across BURGER, REID and GRAY in small numbers. So if you are "in Westray" with your research, get in touch. Margaret Harcus' death register entry states:- Widow of William Sutherland, Farmer, Newbreck, St. Andrews. 29th December 1927 aged 76 years. Senile Decay Father's name not shown. Mother's name Isabella Budge, Stocking Knitter, Deceased. At the time of their marriage William Sutherland was a Farm Servant at Moorhouse, Holm, but after the marriage at some time, he took over the farm of Newbrake/Newbreck from his father-in-law. The marriage actually took place at Newbreck. On the 1901 census Isabella Budge, aged 80, is shown as living at Newbreck with William Sutherland and Margaret Harcus and is listed as William's mother-in-law. It never fails to amaze me that there were nine people living in that house which only had two rooms! I'm off to have a look at the death entry for 1913 - she could be mine! Where did Jeremiah live? Do you have the death register for Isabella? Or, if not, do you have the death register for either Jeremiah Harcus/Arcus, or the daughter, Margaret Harcus/Arcus? If so, it/they may, or may not, notate whether Isabella was alive at the time of said death(s). I see --though I have not viewed/downloaded the register from the GROS-- that there was an Isabella Budge (could be married name or maiden surname) who died in 1913, age 96, St Andrews Orkney... have you checked that record? Does anyone have records, please, of an Isabella BUDGE, born ABT 1823, probably in Tankerness or St. Andrews, but then again, maybe not. She is proving to be rather elusive. She either married or co-habited with Jeremiah HARCUS, as they produced Margaret HARCUS, born ABT 1851. Margaret Harcus was one of my four great grandmothers. Thanks -- Mike Clouston

Many Thanks Clouston frequently used this expression to indicate the couple were married without banns having first been proclaimed. How frequently other ministers used it I don't know.
