    3. I don't know how much help this is to you but Jemima Drever is my grandmother. She married Charles T. Stewart. They had one child - my mother - Adelaide Stewart. Adelaide married Finlay Williams and I am their daughter. We came to the U.S. in 1956. On Nov 9, 2005, at 6:29 PM, Jim Menzies wrote: This email fixes census info. Exact years are not known, but are based on the fact that he was married in Kirkwall in 1892, and is listed on the census for Reay, Caithness in 1901 as a teacher there. In addition, there is one picture of a gentleman and three women taken by the same photographer. All the individuals in this picture are unknown. However, as these pictures were handed down from my grandparents, there would likely be some relationship to these unknown individuals, possibly school related. To provide some help with the teachers, both Lisa and Jim have provided me with census information for teacher in the area for 1891 and 1901. This may provide some reference point for their descendants, and any knowledge of where and when their ancestors taught would be appreciated. I am not overly familiar with the locations shown, but trust their judgment. For anyone who actually lives in the area and would be willing to help, information on the location of the schoolhouse in Widewall, such as street name and present use (since its not longer used as a school) would be much appreciated. 3. Evelyn- Would you know if your grandmother taught school on South Ronaldsay during the [latter part of the] time period of 1892-1899?? I see that "Pupil Teachers" were often of the ages of 17-23, and your grandmother would have been approximately... age 17 to 19 during the years of 1897-1899? What Jim Menzies and I are wondering is if your grandmother could be one of the 3 or so women teachers shown in his photos -- and also if you yourself have any family photos relating to the South Ronaldsay school with names attached to same (so that Jim can possibly figure out if anyone matches between your photos and his). - Lisa {> on 11/9/05 3:56 PM <} Evelyn Hlabse wrote -- I don't know how much help this is to you but Jemima Drever is my grandmother. 3. Got this from from the Suffolk-L @ rootsweb. Anyone interested in taking part in this? Researching e-Genealogy A PhD study is underway at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, examining Internet family history resources and their users. This will investigate the users themselves, how users view both e-genealogical resources and libraries, and how these resources are used within the research process. An eventual aim of the project is to highlight methods of promoting the "added value" of UK Local Studies Library Collections, increasing their visibility to users online. The research also aims to identify, categorise and examine the available resources: developing specific evaluative criteria and promoting increased awareness and understanding within the library community in order to maintain a quality level of service for genealogical researchers in libraries. The first stage of the project is a 5-minute online survey, available at http://www.researchingegenealogy.co.uk. This hopes to gather more information about anyone accessing UK information online for their family history research. I would be grateful if you could pass to any potentially interested parties. If you require any further information, please contact [email protected] Kind regards, Kate Friday *********************************************************** Kate Friday Research Student Dept of Information Management Aberdeen Business School Robert Gordon University Garthdee Road ABERDEEN AB10 7QE Tel. 3. Hello listers in Orkney, I read on The Orcadian web page and heard on BBC Radio Orkney this morning that the Old Schoolhouse in St. Andrews suffered serious fire damage last night. My mother was born in the Old Schoolhouse in September 1912. If anyone can get close enough to get a photo or two of what is left, without endangering life or limb, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks -- Mike Clouston

    1. BYU LDS digitized collection, Tait Family book
    2. Greenwood
    3. Just today received an informative post from the CRAWFORD-L List about Brigham Young University's online collection of books, especially ones linked to the LDS church's new digitization project. The Post was full of good information on the project. Bottom line is that you can search for and view NOW some of the books that have been digitized. One such book is : Tate/Tait family history : from the Orkney's to Canada, 1696-2002 by Jackie Hobbs Found it by using the Geographic search box and entering the single word Orkney. There was only this one hit for that search. I've already gotten that film into the local FHC, but its not a good filming, this far exceeds it in quality. When the book description comes up, click on the typed title, its a hyperlink which will set up the book for viewing. Navigate the pages by using the clickable links at the left of the page images, . You can zoom in if needed, I didn't see pixelation on the map of Orphir until I'd zoomed in quite a bit. To use the BYU search page go here : http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/ To read the entire Post on the digitization project, go to the CRAWFORD archived messages and look at the most recent offering, its for Nov 6 and is from Wanda Harbert who had passed along the message from Ronald on another List. Ronald explains why BYU has some books available now, what to expect in the near future and how to use the site. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CRAWFORD/ Note that on page 14 of the TAIT book is a photograph of Naversdale in Orphir. That is a farm name from another book about the Orphir area, "Memories of an Orkney Family" by Harriet Groundwater pub 1967. I have it on my website because of the dedicated transcription efforts of Mike Clouston. At 43 pages, its 1/10th of the TAIT book's 425 pages which are printable from versions found just after the 'Index' along the left of the book images. The Harriet Groundwater book isn't in the LDS collection, so it won't be digitized. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA

Here's what Sigurd Towrie says: "The principal island is now simply referred to as "the Mainland" - a corruption of the Old Norse "Meginland". The island was originally referred to as "Hrossey" - "Horse Island" in Old Norse. The erroneous name "Pomona" can still sometimes be seen on the occasional modern map but this stems from a seventeenth century cartographical error and has never been used by Orcadians." 3. I'm pretty sure that Pomona is the name of the mainland of Orkney - I'm almost positive on this one. 2. Mike I have to agree with you, the Pomona crisps were wonderful - pity they stopped making them. We used to buy loads of them to take back home with us when ever we were in Orkney. Fiona

    3. Dear Listers Thank you for the extra information. I have just checked on the Scotlandspeople site and have found four James Thomson born between 1860 and 1862 in Orkney. Unfortunately none have the exact birthdate listed on my James' death certificate and thus the birth date may be incorrect. Also, I can't see any link yet to the other families I mentioned. The details I found were as follows:- James Thomson, born 10 August 1860 on Hoy to James Thomson, blacksmith, and Charlotte (couldn't read maiden name). James Thomson, born 10 June 1861 at Renwick on South Ronaldsay to Donald Thomson, fisherman, and Barbara Thomson nee Gray who were wed 9 March 1858. James Thomson, born 5 October 1861 at Holland on Papa Westray to John Thomson, ploughman, and Elizabeth Thomson nee Mackay who were wed on 24 October (year looks like 1867 but couldn't be). John James Thomson, born 20 November 1861 in Papdale Kirkwall to James Thomson, farmer, and Jane Thomson nee Sinclair who were wed on 7 January 1847 on Sanday. To use up my credits I also gathered the following records:- Births of Edwin Alexander Slater and Isabella Mary Slater to Edward Scollery Slater and Clementina Cobban Smith. Marriages of George Robert G. Meil to Frances Irvine Smith and of Robert G. Gilchrist Cusiter to Catherine Reid Mackenzie. These events occurred in Glasgow and Aberdeen but are of Orkney families. I can supply the rest of the details if anyone is interested. I'll now be off-line for a few days. Regards Philip Send instant messages to your online friends http://au.messenger.yahoo.com

    3. Dear Listers Thank you for the information on James Thomson. I have been to the British Columbia archives on Vancouver Island and also to the Vancouver Library on the mainland and have a copy of James' death certificate aswell as death and funeral notices and short obituaries from the newspapers. The death certificate provided his supposed exact birth date. Both the papers and certificate gave his birth location as Orkney. The informant for his death was a cousin of 1038 Main Street in Vancouver but her signature is hard to decipher. She was Laura E. and then the surname ends in 'cadden'. It could be Carlcadden. There is a link between James and a descendant of the Cusiter, Smith (Alexander Smith of Rendall) and Macgregor families from Orkney but whether it is a blood relationship or just one of friendship, I don't know. There is a Will listed in the BC archives but the archivists were unable to locate it, possibly because it was disproved. regards Philip --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
