Alexander Kennedy Allan from St Margaret's Hope, Orkney, came to Canada in 1842, with his young family, first to Niagara, then to Port Rowan, where five more children were born. He was the son of James Allan and Mary Kennedy, both of St Margaret's Hope, Orkney. Interested in earlier records of this family. Any help appreciated. Blake Allan, Victoria BC
Thankyou very much Lisa Well I guess little Jane Anderson has only two things left, she is either out of household being a servant or something somewhere in South Ronaldsay in 1871 or she has run off to Illinois with her brother John MacDonald Anderson!! She would be roughly 20 years old, but can you see her mama letting her go off half way around the world only escorted by a brother!! I guess I will have to see if there is any index in Illinois that might have her married!! I must say tho that I have both her brothers obituaries and neither mention her or any other families than their own left behind Poor girl is just vanished! Hello David, Thank you very much for your reply to my inquiry. I do have the death certificate from the marine extract. For cause of death it lists "suicide by drowning" with no other notation. I would expect that some sort of inquest would be held in such matters but can't find any record of such as yet. (Another ancestor of mine drowned in Wales about a year previous to this incident. An inquest was held the very next day and all the details appeared in the newspaper. What a find that was!) I also have the crew agreement from the Newfoundland but there isn't any type of notation there either-just name, age, place of birth, position (my ancestor was a fireman aboard the ship), and previous service. I've never seen any other crew agreements so I have no way of knowing if what I have is typical. I've written to local studies in Dundee and Glasgow to check for newspaper accounts with no success. The folks at Kirkwall found an article that appeared in the Orcadian 4 days after the incident. But the article itself doesn't provide any "why" information and at the time of its publication states that the body had not yet been recovered. There just seem to be a lot of unanswered questions that are really bugging me about this incident! It's been pretty frustrating! Thank you again for your help. I greatly appreciate your time and assistance. P.S. I notice an Oman in your sig line-I have a Jane born abt. 1808, died 14 April 1860, married Donald Morgan, Caithness. Any connection? Have you seen the Death Certificate? I haven't come across a suicide in Scotland during my research and so I'm unable to comment on the legal requirements there. However under English law a suicide would normally be the subject of a Coronial Inquiry and the Coroner is the informant on the Death Certificate. Also, have you seen the Crew Agreements for the ship? (You don't state whether your ancestor was a member of crew or a passenger). The crew agreement should also throw some light on the circumstances as to how he "signed off " as a crew member. The vast majority of crew agreements are now held by the Maritime History Archive, Memorial University, St John's, Newfoundland. Hi Cathy (antihistamines are starting to work) - I do not see any civil marriage entry recorded for Jane A., ca.1861 thru 1871 for So Ron or Burray. - Lisa {> on 12/12/05 8:36 AM <} Cathy Wagner wrote -- One is Jane Anderson, I have her on the 1861 Burray Census with her parents William Anderson and Mary MacDonald, she is not there on the 1871 with the family, so from that I can assume she died and or married. Hi all I am going thru my files and finding a lot of people missing in action here, One is Jane Anderson, I have her on the 1861 Burray Census with her parents William Anderson and Mary MacDonald, she is not there on the 1871 with the family, so from that I can assume she died and or married. I checked the S. Ronaldsay site for a death and none shows up, so I think we are left with a marriage Now her older brother John MacDonald Anderson had left sometime between 1861 and 1871 (married in 1868 in Illinois, USA) there is a slight chance I suppose she went with him but I highly doubt that as there has been no sign of her with the families there Does anyone have a Jane Anderson that married into their line, she was born in 1845 (age taken from census) Burray, South Ronaldsay Cathy Wagner -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Strangely Anderson was omitted by John Smith in his "The Church in Orkney" of 1907, but in his "Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae" of 1928 Hew Scott gives under his list of Church of Scotland Ministers of Walls and Flotta: "William Anderson born 1st Feb. 1799, son of David A., min. of Kirkurd [Peebleshire]; educated at Univ. of Edinburgh; licen. by Presb. of Peebles; ord. assistant at Evie and Rendall in 1843; adm[itted to Walls and Flotta] 9th May 1844; died 6th June 1865. He marr. 17th July 1845 Lucy Hay (died 20th April 1865), daugh. of David Murray, min. of Dysart, Fife, and had issue - Margaret, born 16th Dec.1846 (marr. Robert Wright, min. of Dairsie [Fife]); Janet Burn born 31st Oct 1848; Davina Lucy Murray born 19th July 1850 (marr. Has anyone any information on the Rev William Anderson, and his family, who was minister in Walls. He was born Abt. 1799 and he died in Walls Abt. 1865, buried in Osmundwall. His wife was Lucy Murray and they had 7 children. Hello to all - And thanks for the responses to my previous question about Sandy Drever. I have another that someone out there might be able to help me with. My Mother's father was a young man named Robert Irvine Morrison. Robert was born in 1884 in Kirkwall & St. Ola, the son of George Morrison and Catherine Smith (M/S Drever). He had an older brother named George (b. 1880) and a younger brother John Walls Morrison (b. 1887). Since Robert was only 14 when my Mother was born (and her mother, Jemima Charlotte Henderson only 16) they didn't marry. The Morrison family was in Kirkwall at the time of the 1901 census, but I have found no record of them after that. Does anyone know what might have become of them? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated Bob Burns Los Angeles, California
I am interested in Thomas and Jane Drever as i think they are in my tree, do you have anymore information? The Thomas in my tree was born in 1840 and died 1920 at Broughton Westray. His wife was Jane Sandison born 1839 and also died 1920 Fiona
Possibly you are looking for Brough farm on Westray. According to my uncle it was one of the largest working farms in Scotland at one time. My grandfather's sister Mary Hepburn Hewison married John Drever who ran the farm but that would probably have taken place between 1910-1920. Sorry to say that I don't have much information on John Drever but his father's name was also John and his mother was Margaret. In the 1901 census the only child listed was John who was 6 years old at the time. Hope this helps. I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this question - When my mother's grandparents died, she was sent to live with some "distant" relatives named Drever. As I recall, they had a farm on Westray. My mother's name was Marjory Eliza Henderson and she lived with the Drever family from about 1906 to 1915. Since I didn't pay close attention to her stories when she was around, I can't remember the name of the mother and father, but they had a son about my mother's age called Sandy (he would have been born around 1900). Does anyone on the list descend from this Sandy Drever and can they shed any light on the names of his parents? Thanks in advance for any assistance, Bob Burns
Hello Listers! I posted this inquiry on the South Ronaldsay board (with thanks to Lisa C.) and thought that perhaps someone on this list might be able to help shed some light. Any information that anyone could provide on this would be most appreciated! Looking for anyone who can provide information or assistance in locating information related to an incident which occurred in Longhope Harbor in 1882, aboard the ship Benalder. My ancestor, Thomas MAXWELL purportedly committed suicide on January 10th, 1882 by jumping overboard. However, I have conflicting reports of the incident. The Orcadian reported the it on 14 January as a suicide while the Scotsman reported that Thomas was blown overboard by a gust of westerly wind. I would be interested in any additional information or accounts of this incident including whether or not the body was ever recovered and where Thomas might have been buried.
