There is no trace of her in 1841 census. There is one mention of her in the Kirk session minutes but other than that I can find nothing. Any information would be great. Fiona Mackay

    3. Hi Cathy - Woke up this morning and read your and Fiona's emails.... sorry about that! The site *should* be accessible, I haven't had any problems with it - although it is true that I am working with my domain name people on one particular issue... but that should not be preventing access at all. Perhaps if you temporarily (thru approx end of January, when certain things should be worked out more fully) use this URL < http://www.southronaldsay.net/index.html > There have not been any recent updates, unfortunately -- but this is because I have been avidly involved with transcribing another huge Project for the site which I hope to add on-line early next year. ;-) I am currently interacting with HMSO right now to get copyright permission for this. I know I've been a bit remiss with Updates for a few months, but next year you will see the reason why (if the copyright permission goes thru, that is!) I do hope to get another Photo Contributor's photos on-line by this week, though. 3. Generally refers to urinary tract stone but is also used less commonly for gall bladder stones. Without the aid of X-ray or Surgery for diagnosis, 1600- 1700 cases would likely be urinary tract and the blockage they can cause, could lead to a fatal result. 3. Many thanks for your reply and information James - I couldn't find Rev William in Smith's "The Church of Orkney". What a tragedy. The parents and the two youngest children dead within a six week period. The health statistics for Scotland as a whole, both rural and suburban, for that period makes grim reading and I would expect the statistics for Orkney to be somewhat similar - For those who might be interested the following link is useful: http://www.scran.ac.uk/scotland/pdf/SP2_3Health.pdf Thank you for your help Susan ________________________ Susan Simmons searching for: Wright, Hughes & Kellett in India Wright, Donaldson, Bain, Green & Dunnett in Caithness Wright, Anderson in Orkney -----Original Message----- From: James Irvine [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, 13 December 2005 00:34 To: [email protected] Subject: [Orkney] Re: Anderson, Rev William & family Strangely Anderson was omitted by John Smith in his "The Church in Orkney" of 1907, but in his "Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae" of 1928 Hew Scott gives under his list of Church of Scotland Ministers of Walls and Flotta: "William Anderson born 1st Feb. 1799, son of David A., min. of Kirkurd [Peebleshire]; educated at Univ. of Edinburgh; licen. by Presb. of Peebles; ord. assistant at Evie and Rendall in 1843; adm[itted to Walls and Flotta] 9th May 1844; died 6th June 1865. 3. I would be cautious on assuming Orkney's health statistics being similar to Scotland as a whole, not least because all the examples in Knox's article appear to relate to urban circumstances which I suspect were worse than rural. But the subject is very complex, as population statistics are as much a function of migration (typically of young families) and birth rates as of health. Robert Barclay's "The Population of Orkney 1755-1961" of 1965 gives: 1861: Under 15/65 & over: Orkney: 33.4%/8.5% Scotland: 36.1%/4.9% 1961: Under 15/65 & over: Orkney: 23.7%/14.6% Scotland: 25.9%/10.6% GRO(S) website gives: 2004: Under 15/65 & over (men)/ 60 & over (women): Orkney: 20%/16%/26% Scotland: 20%/14%/24% ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Simmons" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 13, 2005 1:59 AM Subject: RE: [Orkney] Re: Anderson, Rev William & family > Many thanks for your reply and information James - I couldn't find Rev > William in Smith's "The Church of Orkney". > > What a tragedy. James Smith Hewison was postmaster for Kirkwall for sometime. James' daughter Elizabeth Walls Hewison married Timothy Hewison (first cousin). Thomas Hepburn Hewison was Elizabeth's brother.
