    3. As a seaman in the Royal Navy (RN), his next of kin details would have been on file. The Fiscal obviously obtained them from the Navy. Scapa Flow was a major base for the Royal Navy in both World Wars. Interestingly your transcription doesn't give a ship's name. Perhaps he was attached to the Lyness shore station which only closed in the 1950's. I believe ships of the U.S. Navy that operated in European waters during the First World War were also based in Scapa Flow. 3. Roland St.Clair's entry for Louttit in his "Orcadian Families" (OA D31/14/2, or the Blue booklets available at the OA Desk) states that Margaret Louttit was mentioned in 1756 as the eldest daughter of John Louttit of Lyking and Margaret Graham. "She married Mr.Hourston, and the [Lyking] estate, c.1820, was sold by her heir to the late James Robertson." I don't think this adds much to what you already know, but that ancestry of the Louttits (whose ownership of Lyking goes back to at least 1492) is there if you want it. See also Clouston's Records of the Earldom of Orkney, pp458-459. I have a note (source lost I'm afraid) that John Louttit died before 1751; he had married Margaret Graham in 1695 (Clouston has 1700) and they had another daughter Anna. St.Clair's entry for the Hourston family stops in the 17th century, but he does have an Oliver Hourston in Daill, Evie as a younger son of the Hourstons of Hourston, Sandwick, and father of a John Hourston, fl.1645. 3. Fiona - The only Lyking that I can find in the 1851 census booklet for Evie and Rendall is in Rendall - 6/28 occupied by James Wood and his family. I didn't find a William Hourston, the right age in either the 1841 or 1851 census of Evie and Rendall. Good Luck in your search. 1. William Hourston - Lyking Sandwick
    2. Still trying to verify parents of William Hourston, his marriage states that he was from Lyking, he was born c1779. While browsing "Kirkwall in the Orkneys" i came across a paragraph which said that Lyking had been in possession of Louttits, and that a daughter of Louttits married a Hourston. It also mentioned that the Hourston's sold Lyking c1820. I checked the sasines and sure enough William Hourston of Lyking sold to Robertson of Stromness. It also stated that William Hourston was then residing at Burgar(Evie). I also managed to access various summons for debt etc for William Hourston of Burgar(thanks to Sarah Jane at Kirkwall Library)but I still don't know if this is "my"William However in the 1821 census for Stromness is my William and his wife Cecillia Wood and his family. Could this be the same person? In the census he is listed as a merchant but in subsequent death certs of his children he is listed as a farmer. The last mention I was able to find of him was in 1833 in church records for both Stromness and Birsay as he admitted fathering a child, by this time he was a widower. Sorry if this is a bit longwinded, would appreciate any help as he has been my brick wall for a long time. thanks Fiona

    3. The book is called Fae Quoy Tae Castle and it's a wonderfull book. It has photos [b&w] of all the house on the Isle of Westray. Each house has a write-up with family names. The index however, is a little skimpy and should be expanded. I love my copy. It speaks volumes even without the words. 1. Fordell
    2. Listers, I have found reference to a man who was in the early 1600s "in Fordell". It is not clear, although probable, that this Fordell was in Orkney. I am aware that there is a Fordell in Fife, but it seems unlikely that this is the one being referred to. Can anyone advise me whether there was a "Fordell" anywhere in Orkney?
