Hi Lynette I noted your message about an Elizabeth Cromerty marrying a William Sinclair. I am also interested in an earlier Elizabeth (Bess) Cromertie and wonder if she is in your tree? My Bess married John Barnetson(e) (the younger) in 1719 in Walls. I have no idea who her parents were. John and Bess are my 6x great grandparents. I also have a Benjamin Cromarty marrying a Robina/Jacobina Stout about 1820. My Orkney interests are STOUT MILLAR BARNETSON(E) and CROMERTY(IE) all of Hoy. Regards Helen Southen Christchurch New Zealand

This is for Ken Harrison & Lisa mainly, but anybody else can add to the theme. I have found by good detective work that Dr. David Geddes Phd. was a direct descendant of my 4xGrGrandfather David Geddes 1751-1811. I have made contact with his daughter and have also read " The Forging of a Family" by Auckland Campbell ( Baron ) Geddes which has expanded my knowledge of this branch of my ancestry - especially since my GrGrGranny, Anne Geddes Strang, came to Lanarkshire and married a miner !!!!! - maybe this is where I inherited my lack of ambition and wealth !!!!! Correction for Lisa is that according to Auckland Campbell Geddes, his Father was George Geddes who married Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of James A. and Barbara Gordon of Rispond ( at Loch Eriboll in Sutherlandshire). But there is no proof that Auckland was correct. What seems to be indisputable is that the family had strong connection with this part of Scotland. It seems that this branch of the Geddes Family experienced wealth, poverty, and wealth and great standing again in the British Empire. Baron Geddes was my GrGranfather's ( John Lyle ) 2nd cousin, but I wonder if he was aware of that ?!! Archie LYLE Gilbert.

Hi Jan Just send it when you have it ready Thanks. Don't forget to attach some snippets of your family history, if you have any and I will load that onto the site also. I am currently checking with Lisa that I have not infringed on her work and giving me advice on families and appearance before I let the site be open to all. Sorry not to reply earlier, Heather. I was away all last week. I'm glad you liked the images. I'm going to see if I can do the same with the headstones I shot in Sweetheart Abbey, but that would not be for the Orkney list. Hello everyone. I have made a lot of entries in what will be the Sinclair and Orkney Family tree (Epic) There is a history section in the tree, where I can put stories of the families or individuals entered. I am also logging headstones that I took in St, Peters of the Sinclair's you are able to see the headstone direct from a link to the individual or family members. Has anyone any stories relating to a Sinclair family at present that they would like to have put onto the site, I would like some to allow me to ensure I have it set up correctly, I would rather use stories that will be kept on the site, rather than make something up as it is more interesting for me to do it that way. the histories can have photographs as well as text linked to it. I had also been promised some gedcom files by members of the list, I would be grateful if these members can tell me if they will still be made available. William Sinclair
G'day William & Lori, William, I think that you're on the right track. The Births Indexes have a William Mowat Stout born in 1862 (Walls, Orkney 3), and the only William Mowat Stout that appears to be getting married is the one you mention in 1902. If we turn to the Census Records for Walls we find the following: 1871 Census: Walls and Flotta, Orkney, 2-19) Salwick Alexander Swanston Hd M 65 Inspector of Poor Cai : Dunnet, Charlotte " W M 68 " : " Barbara " D U 36 Oki : Walls, John " S M 29 Fisherman " : " Alexander " S M 29 " " : " Betsy " Dl M 24 " : " Wm M. Both show Barbara Swanston/Swanson as the aunt of William M. Stout/William Mowat. Lori, did Sutherland Stout marry twice? My records show that Sutherland Stout, son of James Stout and Isabella Bremner, married Mary Smith in Stromness in 1867 (Stromness No. 6). Mary being the daughter of James Smith (dec) and Ann Kantley. If we're talking about the same Sutherland Stout, many of his brother Benjamin's children ended up in Illinois. My own interest in the Stouts of Walls is with the Stouts of Misbister, Mary Ann (1862), John (1823), James (1792), and William (ca. 1765). Hope this helps David Armstrong Maylands, Western Australia
Hi David. William was born out of wedlock and his parents did not marry. It seems he and the children simply stopped using the Stout part of the family name. I have only recently found out, through Helen Manson, that one of my Sinclair relatives, Mary Jane Sinclair, celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary with William (Bill) Taylor last week. They live in Herston. I am in the process of preparing a family tree book for her. She is the daughter of Alexander (Sandy) Sinclair and Betsy Berston Norquoy from South Ronaldsay. This makes her a 3rd cousin of mine. I do not know anything about the Taylor side at all so any information on Bill's line would be helpful. I would also like to know of any of Mary and Bill's children so that I can put them in the family tree book. With the help of Helen Manson, I have the following children of Sandy and Betsy: Elsie, William, Henry, Mary Jane, Robert, John, Christina (Chrissie), Margaret Helen (Daisy), Elizabeth, Alexander, Elizabeth and Sinclair Anderson. I hope I have them all, if someone is aware of any other or any mistakes I would be most grateful. If any one has any information on Mary Jane and Bill I would be most grateful. If you would prefer not to publish t to the list, could you contact me on sensiblegrandad@googlemail.com (and yes that is my e-mail address, that is what happens when you let your child set it up for you.) Hi Lori Yes this is the same family as I have, I have found William's death cert and he is registered as William Mowat Stout, the death was registered by his son, but again this states Sinclair Mowat, not Sinclair Mowat Stout. The MI only shows Mowat and not Stout. Strange the number of mistakes made here.
