    3. Hi Lisa The only thing that I could find was the MI's for James And Elizabeth. You will notice the date of death is different. Chalmers in St Lawrence, Burray Erected by ELIZABETH POTTENGER in memory of her beloved husband JAMES CHAMERS who departed this life 13th April 1843 aged 42 years. Also her beloved son … [the remainder of the inscription is obscured by grass and earth and is worn]. 7 35 Erected by the children in memory of their beloved mother ELIZABETH CHALMERS who died 5th August 1865 aged 61 years. I do not think that this gets you much further though, but may jog someone's memory. 2. George Gray
    3. I do not think that the David Scott in the 1841 census is the father of Isabel Hewison Scott and the Janet Scott is certainly not her mother as her mother Jean Hewison is buried in the St Magnus Cathedral Graveyard having died in 1834. David is not recorded on the stone. He may have remarried or left Orkney after his wife died. Their son James is also buried in the St Magnus Cathedral graveyard. I think that the David and Janet Scott is probably David Scott and his wife Janet Garrioch who were married on 4th July 1812 in Kirkwall. Therefore this could not be the same David Scott as his wife did not die until 1834. I have done some research into this family previously as I have Hewison ancestors from Westray and it is very possible that Jean Hewison would have come from Westray. 3. According to the 1851 census for this couple janet was born in Orphir Abt 1790 and David was born in Eday Orkney abt 1779. I understand that a marriage at this age was allowed at this time, but I may stand to be corrected, by those who know more than me. 3. Good morning William! Thank you so much for your emails. I'm a bit "iffy" (I think), about this being the parents of Isabel Hewison Scott - only because, if Janet Scott was really only 50 when the 1841 census was taken, then that would have made her 12 yrs old when married in 1803 and 14 when Isabel was born. Now, we women have never been known to tell a little white lie about our age (!!) - David certainly would be the right age. Cheers! 3. My experience (w/ So Ronaldsay & Burray records) is that I have not ever run across a marriage where either the girl/boy, man or woman, was younger than 16. That's just my experience, though.

    1. [ORKNEY] David Scott/Jean Hewison, Kirkwall & St. Ola, Orkney
    2. Sandi Bellefeuille
    3. Hi Folks: I have reason to believe that David Scott and Jean Hewison are the parents of "my" Isabella Scott, born abt 1805 "Orkney Islands" (per her death certificate of Feb. 24, 1871, in Halifax Nova Scotia). I did a search on an Orkney website, which led me to IGI Batch # C110212, where there was an Isabel Hewison Scott, born April 6, 1805 and, on IGI Batch # M110212, there is a marriage between David Scott & Jean Hewison, on 6 Oct 1803. "My" Isabella Scott came to Canada between the births of two of her children, William, born in Carlisle, England in 1831 and David, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1833. She was married to William Roddick, who I believe was in the British Army, stationed in Halifax circa 1831/32. They remained in Canada after he was discharged. Since the mother of Isabella (Scott) Roddick is speculation at this time, I would like to be able to confirm the following: 1) Is Jean Hewison the mother of Isabella? 2) Did Jean & David Scott remain in the Orkney's and if so, were they on an 1841 census? 3) Who were David Scott's parents & Jean Hewison's parents (why not as for the **moon**!) Any assistance (even if it's another website to look at), would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks, Sandi Bellefeuille, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
