Herald & News Klamath Falls, Oregon July 16, 1937 EMPTY SADDLE THEME OF RITES FOR GAY LALO Elaborate Indian ceremonies marked the funeral services for Julius (Gay) Lalo, grandson of Chief Lalo of the Klamath's, held at Williamson River. In the mounted procession was the empty-saddled horse owned by the young Indian, who died of injuries received when riding a bucking bronco at the rodeo here. The upper picture shows the horse, stripped of all trappings but the saddle, standing alone in the cemetery over Gay Lalo's new-made grave. Below, the horse by the casket, before bridle, boots, chaps and other trappings were removed and placed in the grave with the body.
