    3. July 18, 1945 Herald and News Klamath Falls, Oregon Moses Led Them On The Old Fort Road We've made mention on several occasions recently of the Old Fort Klamath Road through the valley through which a stream of water is running for the first summer in decades, the water coming from the Marine Barracks treatment plant. Looking through some historical documents today, we ran on to what is evidently an account of the first use of this old route north by white men. It was in May 1866, that Lindsay Applegate, the newly appointed Klamath Indian agent came over from the Rogue River Valley with supplies to establish the Klamath Agency at the head of Upper Klamath Lake. He was accompanied by Lucien and Oliver Applegate, Samuel D. Whitmore, and a man named Reed. They crossed Link River at its head, near the present-day Fremont Bridge. The cattle and horses swam, and the wagons and supplies were ferried in Indian canoes. They supposed they would have to go way around through Lost River Gap (now Olene) and down the Sprague River to reach the site of the new agency. But an Indian volunteered to guide them by another shorter route. He took them through the hills, exactly on the present access road to the Marine Barracks, and then down the valley beyond to Upper Klamath Lake at Naylox (now Algoma). At the Point of Rocks, just north of Algoma, they climbed to the summit of the mountain, and then passed down to Williamson river and the agency site. For obvious reason, they named the Indian Moses. That, so far as we can ascertain, was the first time white men ever went that way. It subsequently became the "main road" between Linkville (Klamath Falls) and the north, and traffic there was fairly heavy in the days of the Modoc War a few years later. It was the principal thoroughfare for 50 years, it being abandoned about 1916 when a road was blasted around Algoma point and traffic could go directly north along the lake. For the next 30 years, the old road was little used and almost forgotten by the public. Then came the second World War, the fighting in the mosquito-infested Pacific Islands, and the establishment on the old road of a fine installation for marines who contracted mosquito-borne diseases. It was paved for several miles, on up past the summit where many local residents got their first view of the fertile Klamath Valley in the old days. Beyond the Barracks, it is still a rough, mountain road, almost exactly as it was in the long ago when the ponderous wagons bumped and clattered over the rocks on the way to Linkville from Fort Klamath and the farms in the Wood River and Williamson River districts. High centers didn't worry anybody in those days. _________________________________________________________________ Watch LIVE baseball games on your computer with MLB.TV, included with MSN Premium! http://join.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200439ave/direct/01/

    1. TELLING THE EDITOR
    2. Sandy Pratt
    3. Evening Herald April 14, 1936 TELLING THE EDITOR (Column) Klamath Agency, Ore. - (To the Editor): I have just read an article in your paper published March 19, 1936 by Ross Ferguson, former pastor of the Williamson River Church, which was very ridiculous because most of it was far from the truth. Rev. Ferguson was not the pioneer minister - Rev. Starns, Rev. Beatty, Rev. Sweeney, Rev. Grafious and others were there long before Ross Ferguson came. Major Emery was the pioneer minister. I heard him preach in 1888. Mr. Ferguson says he built the Williamson River Church in 1908. The very same church was built in 1878. In 1909, the present flue was built by Stonewall Jackson, an Indian of this reservation, in two days, and paid $6.00 by the Indians. Pelican Man married a widow of a few years and not after 40 years of cohabitation as stated by Rev. Ferguson. The railroad celebration was held in May of 1909 and not on the Fourth of July. The issuances of passes were discontinued prior to 1905 by Capt. O.C. Applegate, who is still alive and living in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Therefore no passes were needed by the Indians. Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Peffley were not our chaperones. The writer was one of the participants of the parade during the Railroad Day Celebration. The Klamath Indians were very prosperous at the time Mr. Ferguson came. A number of the Indians owned more than 200 head of cattle each. Henry Jackson owned over 1300 head of stock. The Indians did not live in wickiups at that time. Few of the old Indians lived in wickiups in the summer months. The Indians owned and operated three sawmills and manufactured the necessary lumber to construct their homes and barns. I have lived on the Klamath Reservation all my life and during that time I have been very active in tribal affairs. At the present time I am the president of the Klamath Indian Business Committee and secretary-treasurer of the Klamath Indian Livestock Association. During the time I have been active in tribal matters I became familiar with the various events and history of the Klamath Indians, as a representative, interpreter and member of the Klamath Tribe. Hence I feel confident and qualified to relate the various events in the history of the Klamath Indians. Please publish this in "Telling the Editor" column. Very respectfull, Clayton Kirk, Box 284 Chiloquin, Oregon. Editors Note: What constitutes a "pioneer" has always been subject to argument, but in view of the general use of the term, it would seem that Rev. Ross Ferguson, who came to the Klamath Reservation in 1908, could well qualify as a pioneer minister. The history in The Herald-News was not published as written by Rev. Ferguson. _________________________________________________________________ Watch the online reality show Mixed Messages with a friend and enter to win a trip to NY http://www.msnmessenger-download.click-url.com/go/onm00200497ave/direct/01/

    1. John Gleim
    2. Sandy Pratt
    3. Klamath Star June 20, 1895 John Gleim, a prosperous farmer and stockman of Klamath Falls precinct, died of dysponae, or difficult breathing, Saturday night last. The autopsy, by Dr. Wright, ascertained the direct cause of death to have been a quantity of fat which had separated from the walls of the left ventricle of the heart and fastened to the semi-lunar valve, producing instantaneous death, and the coroner's jury rendered their verdict accordingly. The hired man, whose name is Justice, was wakened by a fall downstairs some where during the night, and next morning found John Gleim lying upon the floor, face up, with his head toward the fireplace. Mr. Gleim was a German, who came here 25 years ago an almost pennyless young man, and by his own brave efforts amassed wealth. He leaves about 20,000 worth of property encumbered with some $8,000 liabilities. He has a brother in California. He wrote a will some time ago appointing Mr. James Tobin administrator of his estate. _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar – get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/
