If anyone has access to his >obituary, we would love to have a copy. > >Tom in Michigan Strange how a name can stick with you over the years. 1951 hunting season, my first time in the woods for game. We drove out of Klamath Falls up into Swan Lake on the " Old Incline" this had been a rail line but the rails and ties had been removed, leaving a roadbed and a couple of tressles. Returning home that night we made a side trip further east into sparse trees, brush and medow lowlands, and we stopped to say hello to an old friend of Dad's. This man, Red Britton, had a log cabin and pole corral, perhaps some smaller out buildings. There were deer antlers everywhere you might look, on the roof of the cabin, nailed over the door, in the branches of the large evergreens standing nearby, hanging on the rails of the corral, and lying on the ground. The Cabin was perhaps 14' square and there was no obvious machinery in that yard. There was no one home but I was very interested in the things that I saw, being not yet 12 years old. There was a notice nailed to the corral that Dad read. It was a sale notice. Red had been killed by a bull in that corral some time earlier. The stock and all had been sold at auction. This may not be your man and after near 50 years, memory may not serve me well, but that is how I remember it. Dad was Henry Dallas Cox, born and raised at Olene. His mother was Mary Viola Stout, daughter of Milton and Hattie (Gardiner) Stout. They ranched south of Olene and had leased lands from X- Ranch that was summer graze for the herds. Milton and Hattie went to Utah about 1910 and died there. Mary Viola died after giving birth to twins in 1916. Her first husband was J W (Johnnie) Cox who vanished about 1907 without any warning from working his father-in-laws stock. Next was John T. Cox whom she married after the seven year wait and she bore him Elma Cox, who married Willard Bowdoin, the son of the newspaper publisher at Klamath Falls, and the twins, who both died in infantcy. John T. then married Rose Saunders, a woman with 2 sons from a previous marriage. I'm told that Harold and William Saunders both died in the fifties or sixties. Mother was Eva Fern Cox, doughter of Joe and Dotha (Myers) Cox, Grand daughter of Isreal and Ruthina Cox, all of whom lived at Olene around 1900-1920. Isreal W. and his brothers John T. and Joseph E had a parcel of land in Olene and worked farms in the area. Mom learned to cook working in the harvests with her mother, they would serve 50 or more at a setting, 3 times a day, while the men thrashed and reaped, hauled, and bagged the grain from before dawn to dusk. I have not lived in the Klamath area since 52, lost all contact with the cousins there, and know very little more about the Olene-Merril-Bonanza area. I enjoy reading this list but will try to keep my peace. Thanks for the chance to share a bit. Harold G. Cox [email protected]

    2. Looking for information on Red BRITTON, longtime sheriff of Klamath County. He was the grandson (I believe -- maybe the son) of my wife's great uncle, James BRITTON, who settled in Klamath County in about 1930. This is a branch of the family we have very little information on. I understand that Red BRITTON may have died within the last year or so. 3. Janie Henderson from the Redding area and Gloria Atwater are related into these families. I have provided them with extensive information on these families. I have the 1900 Modoc County Census, early marriage records and some death records. My wife's connection is Ida Jane Henderson m. Ralph Renner dau of Luther M Henderson of Willow Ranch. We are yet trying to find the connection to the other Henderson's Her Uncle Ralph Renner and Aunt Ida had a Ranch on Oregon side of Goose Lake for many years. They (Janie& Gloria)would be thrilled to death to find another cousin. I also believe that Doris Lucas who has a ranch on the "West Side" is another cousin also. What would be nice for you to do would be to sign up to the Modoc list it is very active in North Eastern California and lake county (Lakeview). That list is [email protected] same sign on procedure as this list. I dont have the roots that you guys do in that area, but my parents did live a Malin for years, and I still have a sister in Klamath Falls. We had good friends in Bonanza for years, Peg & Doug Walls, I believe he had a business there in the sixites. I have also given them Information on the Howes, from my records. Please sign on and meet some new "Cousins" John Lewis in Modesto, Ca. By the way, you may know, but many of his Henderson ancestors are buried in the Davis Creek Cemetary. I have looked through this cemetary for them. You might also relate to Poindexter in that area. -----Original Message----- From: Ruth M Henderson <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, February 03, 1999 1:02 PM Subject: Re: [ORKLAMAT-L] SLACK >Yes Yes Yes that is where My husband Virgil Henderson was born in Willow >Ranch Thomas Oliver Henderson was my husband grandfather My dad Henry >Howe 1889-1891 and Virgils dad George Oliver Henderson 1888 were both >born in Alturas about .one of Virgils uncles Luther E henderson pastored >in New Pine Creek We Would Love any information we can getwill share any >we have anyone wants Ruthie Howe Henderson >On Wed, 3 Feb 1999 12:07:47 -0800 "Jon" <[email protected]> writes: >>Bettie Howe Henderson, did you have any Howe's or Henderson's down >>around >>New Pine Creek, or in that area of Oregon and northern California. John Travis and Bruce Hunt Heuston worked there for years and years. Christine (their oldest daughter) committed suicide in Bonanza in 1915 and made quite a splash in the Klamath papers. I have spoken to several people there (considered "old timers" because they've been there all their lives) and they have shared so many wonderful memories of my ggrandparents and their children. I tell ya.......calling the library, school, city hall, etc. and the whole town gets involved in helping you with your research! I may have to call some of those "old timers" back and see if they have any memories of your family & mine together! Take Care Sherre

    2. Hello, I have the book, "Klamath Basin Cemeteries Vol. II". I can look up names if there is some information. The best kind of information is a geographic one -- tell me which town or cemetery --but for the Memorial Park in K. Falls a date is important. The frist burial there was 1946. The Old Linkville Cem. is not listed I'm looking for information about BREWER's around Ft. Klamath. Associated names are DARLING, CLICK, NOE. Grant W. JOHNSTON Chico, CA

    3. Bettie Howe Henderson, did you have any Howe's or Henderson's down around New Pine Creek, or in that area of Oregon and northern California. I have some information on these families, who very intermingled (if that 's the correct word) with Goose Lake and Willow Ranch families. Some of the Henderson's came down out of Oregon into that area. There are Henderson's on our Modoc County list. We have a Henderson in our ancestry even. Amos Leon Marshall Slack died in Bonanza on March 19, 1907 as result of an accident. Ila Fay Slack was arrested for embezzlement around 1920 - 1925. A researcher was checking for me a few months ago, but I have lost contact with her without getting the information I sought. Bettie Slack Killgore>> Bettie ~ My Heuston family settled in Bonanza in 1912. I contacted both the Klamath Library Genealogy Section (who were VERY friendly, helpful and researched right away for me) and the Klamath County Historical Society/Museum which took quite some more time(4 months!) and several long distance calls before I got a response. My most effective research was done in a, perhaps, more unusual way. I called the city hall ( which has extremely limited hours), the school, the librarian, etc. They were so friendly and helpful and they spoke to other people in the town and I ended up with phone numbers of "old timers" in the area who were exceptionally forthcoming with memories of my family. I think that half the time was involved in helping me out. So, in addition to the newspaper articles and records info I received from the library and museum, I got wonderful dictated memories of the family, including some from a teacher of my ggrandparent's children! Now I have stories of hunting, fishsing, work, where they lived and with whom, as well as some of their adventures and some sad stories, too. You might try it; I was surprised all that I was able to find out. Sherre --------------7EA76959A1AB3F44AC6AB170--

What were the odds that there would be 3 of us with relatives from Bonanza?! My Heuston family arrived in Bonanza in 1912. Most of the family had moved on by the time my great grandmother Sadie (Sarah Ann) Heuston died in 1955. Many of our family are buried in the cemetary there. Jerome DeWitt, Christine, Martha, John Travis, Sarah Ann, Merlyn, Fannie Lyndall Celeste, Earl Lundy, Eldon Lundy........... Rev. Robin and Marvel Barrett of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Langell Valley are the caretakers of the Bonanza Cemetary now. Their home # is (541) 545-6980 and another # to reach them is (541) 891-1700. They have been very helpful to be, as I am researching from California, too! Just wanted to say hello and see if you or Bettie knew any of my family names! Take care and good hunting! Sherre

    3. In what year did death records start being recorded at the state lever? Do I search the county or state records for a 1912 death? Specifically I am looking for the death record of Thomas A. BARROWS who died 1912, probably near Merrill, and he is buried at the Old Merrill Cemetery. Thanks for any help that you can provide. Richard 'Tony' Kirk
