I'm sorry about that last post that went out with no message - fat fingers, I guess. Another interesting point about the tule is that it was widely used by the Native Americans for a wide array of things, from housing to rafts, duck decoys, mats, etc. Bettie

Hi Pat, My great-grandparents (Czech) also purchased land in the Malin area in 1909. I was able to get the 1910 Census for Klamath County and have transcribed as much as I could for the Tulelake Precinct, area outside of Merrill. I can see if your g-uncle Anton Petrasek is listed in 1910 in this area -- I found my g-grandparents, et al in this area. However, I have to warn you that the microfilm for Klamath County, OR in 1910 was really poorly done, i.e., there are multiple images along with the fading ink problem, so there is loads of missing information where I just couldn't read. (I don't plan to do any more transcribing for this particular microfilm, since my primary objective was to find my great-grandparents.) As soon as I am able to neaten up things I will be submitting my transcription for placement on the internet. I will also be getting the 1920 Census Malin Precinct transcribed very shortly. I believe Cheers--Kat [email protected] > Subject: [ORKLAMAT-L] Tulelake > Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 20:53:51 -0700 > From: "Pat" <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > > Hi all, > > As the story goes, my g-uncle, Anton Petrasek, purchased 73 acres of land in > the Malin area in 1909, but had to live in Klamath for the first year he was > in Oregon. Greetings: I am researching SKEEN. David b in 1874, William b 1876 and Matthew Hiram born 1879, in Siskiyou County. Their father was Franklin Norris "Doc" Skeen and their mother was Kitty SHEEPY, daughter of a Modoc Indian Chief who was an arbitrator between the Army and the Indians. David Skeen lived in the Sprague River area on a ranch and also William lived on the Klamath reservation. I have very little information on Matthew Hiram. Any information is appreciated on this family. Thank you. Gerry in Oregon
Tule Lake (two words) once covered a wide area to the south of the Malin townsite. The lake was shallow, and was easily drained to make farmland available for homesteading. A remnant of the lake remains and is now in the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. It's a popular area for birdwatching. Tulelake (one word) is the name of a town established in the middle of the lakebed. Malin is in an area settled by Czechs in the 1900s. The town itself started taking shape in 1911. The Oregon-California border runs across the old Tule Lake area. The town of Tulelake is in California, Malin is in Oregon. Those interested in Malin might go to their local library and make an interlibrary loan request for Klamath Echoes No. 8. The Echoes series was produced in the 1960s and 70s by the Klamath County Historical Society. Volume No. 8 has a number of articles and photos on Malin and the surrounding area. The Klamath County Library has several copies of each issue in the series. Todd in Klamath Falls
Hi all, As the story goes, my g-uncle, Anton Petrasek, purchased 73 acres of land in the Malin area in 1909, but had to live in Klamath for the first year he was in Oregon. The land he had purchased was under the waters of Tulelake. Does anyone know more about the reclamation project at Tulelake, or where I might find information about it? Was the lake's name really "Tulelake" or was it "Tule Lake?" Is any of the lake still there? Did the town of Malin exist in 1909? Thank you, Pat

Hullo dear Oregonians, I have been hunting (see below) for my greatx2grands who were early settlers of Oregon and their names don't even come up online at the Oregon archives. Of course, I am very new at this--What I have found is listed below and any other news would be great. Your listowner did want me to include a family story: My granddad Chester Clare TURLAY, was part Indian (which I am also trying to trace) and as a result, his success in starting up the Electric Company (by putting up the lines) irked some fellows who chased him to the Klamath River's edge bent upon ill intent. Chester leaped in and swam across, only to find another gang on the other side, so he swam back. He was proud that he could take any three men his own size, which was 6'5" and that he married the prettiest girl in Wallowa County, Daisy DeForrest Wasson. (Daisy's book, AROUND THE CAT'S BACK tells of her growing up on the homestead and was kindly published by the Bear Wallow Publishing Company in LaGrande, OR. None of the family makes any money from this and it's a beautifully done book. And it's 50% discounted now.) This was a huge breakthrough, but could someone advise me how to access this census data? Or, does this match with anyone out there's family tree? Dear Felicia, I was at the National Archives today and looked at the Oregon 1870 census index for your Trimbles and found listed your Benjamin Bradley Turlay and Stephen A. Trimble, both in Linn County, Oregon. Stephen A. Trimble was shown in Syracuse District, on page 594. Stephen A. Trimble must be the S. A.Trimble about whom you inquired. If you will refer to this census you can get further data on him and his family. >>>Eugene E. Trimble >>> >>> >>>> Hi, >>>> >>>> I have been listing re: our S. A.
