What a tragedy. The Oregonian identified the other 3 year old girl child. I'm sorry I don't recall her name, and I don't have the paper here. The paper says that Cleora Godowa was driving back from picking up Easter decorations for her church and that a tire on her car blew. Neither she nor the pickup truck driver could do anything. He and his passenger were apparantly returning from a softball game. My heart goes out to everyone affected. Johnson who lived in Klamath County, Oregon in 1900. I believe Ann M. may be Missouri Ann Hink. She is listed in the 1900 census as Ann M. I traced them to this census record via a death certificate on Missouri Ann Johnson. The children listed on the census of David and Ann M. are: Albert, John, James M., Benjamin D. and Mabel. All of the children are shown to be born in California except for Albert who was born in Oregon. If you have any information on this family I would love to hear from you.

HERALD & NEWS January 18, 1949 Mrs. Hayman, Last Modoc Excile in Oklahoma, Dies At Her Home In Tulsa Mrs. Cora Pickering Hayman, 78, believed the last of the exiled Modoc Indians living in Oklahoma, died at Tulsa on Tuesday, January 4, according to word received here today by Mr. and Mrs. Clyde James. Mrs. Hayman's passing closed a chapter in the history of the Modocs, whose battle against the United States Army in the Modoc lava beds south of here in 1872-1873 was a national sensation. After the 153 Modocs, including Mrs. Hayman - then a child of two years - were removed from the Klamath country as punishment. They went first to Fort McPherson, Nebraska, and then were sent to the Quapaw Indian Reservation in Indian territory. After she grew to womanhood, Mrs. Hayman went to work for the Indian service. She was a dietitian, and was long in charge of the children's kitchen at the Seneca Indian school at Wyandotte, Ok. She retired in 1940 and lived in Tulsa at the time of her death. She was a member of the Society of Friends. Mrs. Hayman was an aunt of Clyde James, prominent Klamath Indian who lives at Klamath Falls. While Tulsa papers say that Mrs. Hayman was the last of the exiled Modocs, this is not strictly true because some of the Modocs returned after exile and at least one of them, "Aunt Jennie" Clinton, still lives at Williamson River. Mrs. Clinton is about 90 years of age. A niece of Captain Jack, leader of the Modocs, she recalls many incidents of the war which occurred when she was about 12 years of age. Mrs. Hayman was evidently the last of the exiles still living in Oklahoma. Many of their descendants live here, however, and many others live in the Klamath Country. _________________________________________________________________ Get rid of annoying pop-up ads with the new MSN Toolbar FREE! http://toolbar.msn.com/go/onm00200414ave/direct/01/
