Howdy - trying to solve your mystery. Could you tell me a bit more about the HILL family, as you know it. Am interested in John and Esther. Have not located the MENDENHALL surname in my later volumes, so am wondering if she was from PA or NY, or even where the HILL family lived. There are many references to John HILL but little conclusive. One abstract lists a John as the son of Richard, son of Sarah. Let me know. David Sheridan WY
Thank you very much for taking an interest in this problem. The Mendenhalls were indeed in Pennsylvania, and both John Hill and his wife, Esther Mendenhall died in Pennsylvania, so my guess is that they moved across the river for a short while. I don't have a birthplace for John Hill, but his parents were John Hill (1736-1814) and Mary Gibbons (1743-1827). Again, I don't have a birthplace, but they both died in Middletown, PA. John Hill's parents were William Hill (1706-1747) and Mary Hunter (1706-1770). William Hill was born in Rathdrum, Wicklow, Ireland. I found this statement in "Record of the Descendants of John and Elizabeth Bull Early Settlers in Pennsylvania 1674-1919" copywrited Jan 1919 by Commodore James H. Bull, US Navy Retired. Page 13 states, " A daughter who married William first came to America and some time afterward John Hunter emigrated with the rest of his family. He bought a farm in Newton Twnshp in Chester Co, PA, the deed of which is recorded at West Chester, PA, under the date 1723. The Hunter family are buried at the St. David's Episcopal Church at Radnor, PA." (John Hunter was from northern England and moved to Ireland to escape the persecution of the Romanish Stuart Kings after the restoration. He was a trooper under Wiliam of Orange). Hope this helps put the family in context. Thanks. Dorothy Hammond " On 8/17/04 9:03 AM, "dtourison@vcn.com" <dtourison@vcn.com> wrote: > Howdy - trying to solve your mystery.
