    3. Before you read the following. I have noticed a little difference between the stamps. The waves on the ship of the German stamp is a little taller then the American stamp. That is about the only difference that I can tell. And you have to look close to see it. If any one wants a copy please let me know. I typed everything that is on the whole page about the stamp, and how I see it while typing it out. Postal Service 1983 Use Correct Zip Code The Concord Commemorative Stamp A 20 cent commemorative stamp marking the 300th anniversary year of the first German immigrants in the United States was issued May 5 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. The Federal Republic of Germany on the same day issued a stamp to recognize the anniversary. The simultaneous issuances by the two nations recognize the courage and stamina and motivation of the first and subsequent immigrants. More then seven million German immigrants have come to the United States since 1683 and have made significant economic, political, social and cultural contributions. The 1980 census reported that there were at that time more Americans of German ancestry than Americans of any other national origin. The U. S. and German stamps were designed by Richard Schlecht of Arlington, Virginia, who is an American of German descent. The designs feature the ship, concord, which brought 13 families from Krefeld to the New World in search of religious freedom. The families, led by Franz Daniel Pastorius, had responded to an invitation from William Penn to settle in Pennsylvania. On October 16, 1683, they founded Germantown, the first German Settlement in America. Germantown today is part of the City of Philadelphia. Since no pictures of the Concord exist, Schlecht based his design on written descriptions. The designs of both stamps are nearly identical, with the national identifications, denominations and placement of lettering being the primary distinctions between them. Bottom of page.
