I am desperately trying to connect our little branch to another Uptegrove branch. William G. Uptegrove was my gggrandfather. We do not know what the G. stands for. We know that he was in Horry County, SC in the late 1830's as he bought property there on the Waccamaw River in an area named Peachtree. He married Ann H. from Conwayboro,SC. In the 1840 and 1850 censuses he was in Horry county and in 1860 he was in Georgetown census. That is a neighboring county. He was a mariner. His sons were mariners and pilots as well. He had three children that lived. WIlliam J.L., John Edward, and Sarah Jane. Sarah had a daughter, Sally. John Edward had John Edward, Jr., Alma (He was my grandfather.), Ida, and Mary Lois(Molly). Don't these names look familiar to someone. I saw a William Green Uptegrove Stowe who was born in 1838?. Now I think his mother was an Uptegrove. Could that possibily be a connection. Why would someone name their child that if they were not naming it after someone. Help please! Jane
Did you get any help on your William G Uptegrove? I just checked June Lutz' book. Too many Williams and no Wm G. I checked Alma and all were female. Can you get to the courthouse and see if there are any deeds which indicate any generation back or where from? Or an earlier will which names your Wm G? You've probably tried all of that. I have both Lutz' and shank's books and will continue to check for you if you feed me new clues. Checked Green. I you don't know how to check through deeds, I'll be glad to point out some clues to look for.
