    1. Re: [ORIGINAL-13] Group Question.....
    2. Vincent Summers
    3. Alright. Since this was mentioned to the group, I will give the answer to the group. There is totally no envy here. The trouble is that cyberspace is hard to evaluate by everyone. It was not meant as a slur to the chinese, it was not meant as a slur to the Germantown Historical Society, it was none of these. It was just a gag, based on the times. Everything that a tourist may pick up seems, these days, to be made in China. For instance, I work for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. We have built a group of telescopes called the VLA. The very large array. It featured in that corny movie (which I had the good sense not to go see) called CONTACT with Jodie Foster in it. Sorry if you liked that movie. It is just how I see it. The VLA is at its 20th year. Hence, 20th year celebration stuff is being released. We all got a tie-pin. Guess where it was made? Now you know why the joke. 1. Re: [ORIGINAL-13] Group Question.....
    2. Vince No offense but it did make me look on the bottom of the mug. It says W. Germany, best as I can say. Hard to read. Even if it was made in Japan it would be okay by me. I did take this totally as a joke but just thought everyone else would be interested in our dialogue. Not every immigrant's ship has a mug from Japan or anywhere. I never expected it to be an antique at all. Just proud to have it! I would like to know if anyone else comes across one. In the mean time, I will hold on to it until antique roadshow can tell me how many where made. Another joke! Barb

    2. Group O 13 Thanks to everyone who answered my post. I had found out from the dictionary also where the name for the Graf Zeppelin came from. I did know Graf means count but also feel some of the Grafs (any spelling) might be our kin. Just thought at first glance could be named for our people, and of course shot off the question to the group a little to quick. Also have wondered about our family connection to the Graef House or Declaration House in Philly. Sorry this was the only mug I have seen anywhere but from what Vince wrote maybe there will be others popping up for sale places. Does anyone know if the Germantown Historical Society sold one for the 300th anniversay? Gene? Barb Locker

    3. A person who may be interested in joining us, has submitted this information to see if you can connect him to the 13... Oh, BTW, that letter where I mentioned the Chinese Lettering on the bottom of the cup, and the thought that it may have been a cup from the Germantown Celebration, should not be taken seriously. I was teasing about the writing, and I did not mean to connect that paragraph to the one about the Germantown Historical Society. Quite often I make large jumps in thought content between paragraphs. Actually the letter was a private one at that, that was quoted publicly, though I am not fussing about that... Here is that POTTS data, then... Dear Mr. Summers: While researching my wife's Bone family, I ran across notes on her Potts line. I have not confirmed this information, but it might be connected to that PA group. 1. [ORIGINAL-13] Krefeld
    2. Greetings, searchers: As some of you are aware, I am planning a trip to Krefeld, Germany later this month. In doing some research in preparation for the trip, I came across the fact that Charlotte, NC is a sister city to Krefeld, and there is a page devoted to Krefeld on Charlotte's website. The URL is: http://www.charweb.org/organizations/international/sister_cities/krefeld.html It mentions a "Philadelphia House," which was erected in honor of the 13 families which settled Philadelphia (Germantown). Does anyone know of this Philadelphia House from your travels or reading? I have heard of the Philadelphiastrasse, and in fact have a picture of that sent by someone on the previous Original-13 list, but nothing about the house. Anyone??? David Updegraff [email protected]

    3. Hi Cathy, I have John Nash and Susanna Uptegrove Tyson, also William Uptegrove Tyson as son, b.23 Aug 1782, but have no spouse for him. As I have said before my Tyson family is that of Cornelius Tyson, so then are John and William. However I do not have a John Uptegrove Tyson, but I do have a Jacob. Actually, all the children I have are: Abraham, William, Mary, Jacob and Hannah. And Jacob is the only one I have a spouse for. He married Elizabeth Bergey. I visit the LDS on Tuesdays, so could look William up again now that I know his parents and grandparents names. Susan Hunsicker [email protected]

    2. Kind of off the subject but... just found out that there was a postage stamp issued with the "Graf Zeppelin" (dirigible) on it. Don't know the year but could find out. Now the most valuable US postage stamp (at least until about 1996). Now what interests us, anybody know why it is called Graf ? ~~~ And also, I have been holding out on you folks. Saw a beer stein on ebay which I bid on and won (that's the holding out part-I told none of you while bidding). This stein has the Concord ship in the center, with "1683 - 1983." Above the ship, " 300 years of Germans in America." Below in German "300 Jahre of Deutsche in America." US flag on the left and German on the right. Am I thrilled? Now you'll all say you have one too ;-) Barb Locker

    3. I've been watching the UPTHEGROVE discussion with much interest. My g-g-grandmother was an UPDEGRAFF. Her grandfather was Isaac UPDEGRAFF (AKA UPDEGROVE), born in 1790 in PA. I believe his father was also an Isaac. One researcher on our line has the parents of Isaac SR as John UPDEGRAFF (UPEGROVE) and Elizabeth BENFIELD. Isaac SR had a brother named Conrad. This link is not documented (yet!). Anyone familiar with this line?
