W. V. Perry, who 27 years ago came to the Hood River Valley, where he purchased a portion of the East Side homestead place of the late D. A. Turner, died at his Heights home last Friday afternoon. Funeral services for Mr. Perry, who was a native of Indiana, 72 years old, were held Monday afternoon at the Anderson funeral home, Dr. Heber S. Mahood officiating. Interment followed at Idlewilde cemetery. Mr. Perry homesteaded in Kansas. He was married at Ellis, Kas., on July 7, 1883 to Miss Ida Hengst. Coming here Mr. Perry devoted his efforts to clearing a home from the virgin wilderness. He developed one of the best East Side tracts. Mr. Perry was ever interested in progressive movements and supported measures that brought about good roads for this community He took an especial interest in the welfare of the young and always supported plans for better schools. Six years ago Mr. Perry retired from active life and removed to the Heights. He had many friends here and last week end many expressions of grief of his friends and neighbors were heard. Mr. Perry is survived by his widow and the following children: R. W. Perry, Mrs. Hugo Paasch, Mrs. Warren Wells, Mrs. Leo Drake, and Mrs. J. B. Jackson. Eleven grandchildren survive. A brother, Adolph Perry, lives at Farmersville [sic], Ind; and a sister, Mrs. Belle Trenary, is a resident of Indianapolis.
