The Dalles Chronicle, November 17, 2002 40 Years Ago, November 17, 1962 Indicted slayer-suspect Edward Willis Sheckler became a Wasco County jail resident Friday. Gilliam County Sheriff Volney Thomas brought Sheckler here for confinement pending psychiatric examination of the suspect. Wasco county officer's said Thomas indicated this procedure will begin in Portland next Friday. Sheckler was indicted by the Gilliam County grand jury and is accused in the fatal shooting of State Policeman Ralph Bates the evening of November 8 on the Oregon Trail highway east of Arlington (Oregon). Ross R. Rakow's victory margin in the Superior Court judgeship race was reduced to 33 votes when absentee votes in the November 6 election were counted. Judge Rakow, a write-in candidate, held a 79-vote lead over Edward P. Reed, before the absentee votes were counted. 60 Years Ago, November 17, 1942 Eric Johnson, member of the Wasco County salvage committee, is getting everything lined up today for loading two railroad cars with scrap metals from the local salvage piles this week for shipment to war smelters. The actual labor will be performed by a crew under the direction of Vernon Obrist. Galvanized metal, fenders and light pieces of scrap will be placed in one of the cars and the heavier scrap metal in the other. 80 Years Ago, November 17, 1922 Miss Pearl Emory of Vancouver (Washington) arrived in The Dalles this week to take the place of Miss Gertrude Southworth as the teacher of penmanship in the high school. Miss Emory is a graduate of the Benke-Walker business college in Portland. Two declarations of intention to become United States citizens were filed at the office of the county clerk this morning. Edward T. King and Johnny Conroy, both natives of Ireland, were those making the declarations.
