    3. The Dalles Chronicle March 23, 2003, page B4 Compiled by Elroy King. 40 Years Ago, March 23, 1963 With the promotion of Sergeant Les L. Thouvenel to head the local office of the Oregon State police, Corporal James Shelton of Pendleton (Oregon) has been assigned to The Dalles as second officer in charge effective April 1. Thouvenel took over the office here March 1, with the retirement last February of Sergeant C. A. U'Ren, who is now in charge of The Dalles Bridge. An inky black mixture of silt and water spewed from the end of a (15,000) foot long pipeline here Friday as dredging began on The Dalles Highway bypass project. The material is being pumped from the bottom of the Columbia River into the area on which the freeway's grade is being built by the contractor, Roy L. Houck, [&] Sons. 60 Years Ago, March 23, 1943 Two more dairies supplying The Dalles are going out of business according to announcements made today. J.Y. Gibson, operator of Alfalfa Lawn dairy for the last 10 years said this morning that he is quitting business April 1. The recent half cent increase in the milk price in not sufficient to compensate for higher feed and labor costs, Gibson declared. The second dairy operation that will go out of business is the Ingels herd in the Dufur (Oregon) valley. The prize herd of 22 Jersey cows this week were advertised for sale. Milk supplied by the herd had been sold wholesale to Dalles distributors. According to Frank Ingels it has been found impractical to continue operations under the present price and labor setup. 80 Years Ago, March 23, 1923 Records of the transfer of title to the Dufur (Oregon) Farm and Fruit company, by the Washington Securities company, of the property purchased by the latter company at the sheriff's sale of the Dufur Orchard CoOwners company on January 15 were filed in the office of the county clerk this morning. The new company is capitalized at $200,000 and C.G. Frisbie, Marvin E. Holland and William C. Holland are the incorporators. The Women's Christian Temperance Union met on Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. H.M. Ford, who had charge of the program for the day. Mrs. C.A. Fox, vice-president, presided over the meeting. Reverend John L. Logue gave the main address, entitled "Law Enforcement." J.O. Randall, recently employed by the Welcome restaurant, and Mrs. E. Randall, have purchased the Rhodes cafe at 512 Second Street from Amos Rhodes. 100 Years Ago, March 23, 1903 In the future passenger conductors on the O.R.& N. (Oregon Railroad & Navigation) will receive about $140 per month instead of $12 and those on freight trains will receive $3.45 per 100 miles instead of $3 as formerly as a 15 percent increase in wages for all freight train employees of the O.R.& N. and ten percent better wages than has in the past been paid to those serving in the passenger branch of the company service has been announced as the result of a conference that has been on for some time in Portland between Superintendent J.P. O'Brien and a committee from the operating department. J.P. Kononen went down to Lyle (Washington) this week and he reports the track laying crew would reach Swale Canyon yesterday. John Martin went down yesterday and says they reached the canyon. Track is now laid within sixteen miles of Centerville (Washington).
