The Dalles Chronicle November 23, 2003 History Mystery Photo (Text Only) "A trio of aviation buffs picked up on last week's photos. Lafie Foster, Dan Sanders and Willis gholsten all knew that the top plane was a stunt plane piloted by Tex Rankin. He was a nationally-known celebrity in 1939 when his air circus visited The Dalles, having set several records, including a speed run from Canada to Mexico, and a stunt pilot as well. The United Airlines liner marked "Flagship", was part of Rankin's entourage. The event can be dated exactly, thanks to a souvenir kept in the same photo album in which the plane pictures were found.
