The Dalles Chronicle April 6, 2003 (Text Only) As can be seen by the inscription around the edges of last week's photo, our subject was the original home of Judge Joseph Gardner Wilson, dating from 1865-1915. The site of the home, which looks to be quite far out in the country from the photo, is at Ninth and Lewis Streets in The Dalles, not far from the Joseph G. Wilson school that was named in his honor. Joseph G. Wilson graduated from Cincinnati Law School in 1852. He married Elizabeth Millar in November, 1854 and the couple lived in the Salem (Oregon) area. In 1862, Wilson was named the first circuit court judge in Wasco County. Ten years later he was elected to Congress and moved to Ohio. He died in Ohio in 1873 and his wife and four children moved back to The Dalles. Elizabeth Millar Wilson taught for one year at the Union Street School and the following year, 1874, became the first woman Postmistress in the U.S., appointed to run The Dalles office by Ulysses S. Grant. She served until 1886. In 1925, the name of East Hill School (originally built in 1894) was changed to Joseph G. Wilson School.
