The Dalles Chronicle April 6, 2003 20 Years Ago, April 6, 1983 Wasco County deputies already in the area on the investigation of a cattle shooting rescued a Prineville (Oregon) man who was thrown in the water when he went over Shearar's Falls in a kayak Tuesday evening. The victim of the kayak accident, identified as Marty Ray Carroll, 20, was pulled out of the Deschutes River below the falls by a deputy. He was taken to the hospital by Maupin (Oregon) ambulance and treated for hypothermia and released. 40 Years Ago, April 6, 1963 Three candidates are in the race for the District 12 school board position to be vacated June 30 by Dr. John Gilhousen, present board chairman. As the deadline for candidacy neared the field Friday afternoon included L.W. Hoskins, Edgar Dick and Dale Fallon. Mrs. Bonnie Smith, who had taken out a petition, did not file a candidacy. Harry Hogan, former Wasco county district attorney, has been named associate solicitor for water and power in the Department of Interior in Washington, D.C. Hogan has been serving as regional solicitor for the Department in Portland. Interior Secretary Steward Udall made the announcement. Another school record was broken again Friday during the first annual Mid-Columbia Invitational Track meet held in The Dalles. This time however it was a Hood River High School mark and in the pole vault. Frank Eastlery vaulted 11 feet, one-quarter inch breaking Hood River's old mark of 11 feet. Ironically, Steve Lawrence, The Dalles, set a new DHS (Dalles High School) record at Hood River Monday when he soared 11-7. 60 Years ago, April 6, 1943. The bomb reconnaissance school being held tonight at the civic auditorium, starting at 8 o'clock, will hold its second session this evening with Lt. John P. Tipper of the army bomb disposal command in charge. Anyone interested is asked to communicate with Charles Roth Jr., fire chief, or enroll personally in the class at the auditorium. Miss Celia B. Hood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Hood of Tygh Valley (Oregon), is the first young woman from that district to enlist in the WAVES. 80 Years Ago, April 6, 1923 A resolution condemning the proposed referendum movements on the state income tax and oleomargarine bill, was adopted by the Pomona Grange of Wasco County at a recent meeting held at Eightmile. It was pointed out in the general discussion that Governor Pierce, in his campaign as governor of Oregon, made a state income tax as one of the principal talking points of his candidacy. Grangers took the stand that the income tax as passed is the fulfillment by the governor of this pledge and that the measure should at least be given a trial. Abandonment of the bounty system of predatory animal extermination, and a cooperative effort between the county and the United States Biology Survey to trap these pests by means of paid men is asked in a petition filed in the county court this morning by County Agriculture Agent C.W. Daigh. Wasco County already has two government trappers, one maintained by the Biological Survey and another by stockmen and sheepmen. 100 Year Ago, April 6, 1903 News has just reached us on the total destruction by fire of G.W. Bowen's store and post office at Glenwood (Washington). The fire started Wednesday evening while Mr. Bowen was at supper. The blaze spread rapidly to the oil room, and before even the books could be saved the entire building was destroyed.
